Comprised of 18 tracks culled from the singer/composer's first three decades, The Very Best of Enya was pieced together by the artist herself, along with longtime collaborators Nicky and Roma Ryan. Luckily, the trio seems enamored by most of the same songs that the general public is, resulting in one of those rare "greatest-hits" collections that goes deep without depriving the listener of the essentials. With tunes like "Orinoco Flow," "Caribbean Blue," and "Book of Days" in the pot and out of the way, it's easier to appreciate hidden gems like "Cursum Perficio," "Boadicea," "Trains and Winter Rains," and "Anywhere Is." Cocktail Slippers list the Go-Go's as one of their main influences, and one guesses that's precisely what most critics will latch onto; well, they're both girl bands. But so were the Shangri-Las, and if they had joined forces with their '70s counterparts, the Runaways, the result would sound a lot like Cocktail Slippers: bad girls one and all, all snarls and sneers behind their pretty faces and catchy songs, while simultaneously oozing vulnerability. Musically, the Slippers cross the two bands' styles as well, oftentimes mixing harmony-laced pop with rough-and-ready rock & roll -- and never more so than on "Hard to Do," where the group indeed evokes the Go-Go's, albeit backed by the Stooges. If it looks like a 1970s/1980s metal band and sounds like a 1970s/1980s metal band, it just might be a 1990s/2000s metal band instead. Item: Reflection's When Shadows Fall is a 2008 release that draws most if its inspiration from pre-1990s metal, and there is none of the punk influence that is a big part of so much metal in the 21st century. From alternative metal to death metal and black metal to metalcore, punk's influence on post-'80s metal has been enormous. But When Shadows Fall, which is this Greek band's third album, is decidedly old-school when it comes to riffs, melodies, and lyrics. Reflection's work is often described as "epic/doom metal," which is accurate; the fantasy-based lyrics have that epic quality, and the melodies and riffs are slow and deliberate. When Shadows Fall could be described as a combination of Black Sabbath, Ronnie James Dio, and Candlemass, with hints of bands like Uriah Heep and Budgie. This 47-minute CD is consistently melodic -- and even though the songs rock aggressively, none of them are terribly harsh or abrasive (certainly not by 2008 standards).
