The early 2000s have seen a string of big-budget remakes of classic horror films. In addition to THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE and THE HILLS HAVE EYES, John Carpenter's benchmark slasher flick HALLOWEEN has been given a new-millennial overhaul. At the helm of the project sits rocker Rob Zombie, whose previous films, HOUSE OF 1,000 CORPSES and THE DEVIL'S REJECTS, brought a fan's touch and an auteur's vision to the director's chair. While Zombie's HALLOWEEN is faithful to Carpenter's vision, there are some obvious changes, the most pronounced of these being the substantial focus on Michael Myers's childhood. The film posits Michael (played by a creepily vacant Daeg Faerch) as a troubled child made all the worse by a horrible home life--wonderfully illustrated via William Forsythe's performance as Deborah Myers's boyfriend--and constant abuse at school. Zombie paints Michael's pain with palpable grit and sleaze, but he isn't out to put our culture on the couch--he simply wants to show Michael killing his family. With the exception of Michael's therapy sessions while incarcerated, the film, post-massacre, stays loyal to the original. Zombie's film is clearly the work of a filmmaker who knows and loves the genre. The director's signature is stamped all over HALLOWEEN (most notably in the use of grainy home movie footage and a smokin' classic rock soundtrack), although remnants of Carpenter's brilliant original still remain. When it comes to remakes, it's hard to ask for much more.

Halloween Reviews:

"Zombie's version offers an extended prologue that fills in the formative days of Myers' psychosis..."-- Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly

"It's relentlessly malevolent....Zombie's production design laces it with a truly nasty edge."-- Jamie Russell, Total Film

2 stars Very dissapointed
I was really looking forward to watching this film when it got released in cinemas. I was wondering how Rob Zombie was going to be able to direct a remake of the classic 1978 John Carpenter version which shook up audiences and changed the face of the horror genre. When I finally got a chance to watch this film I was extremely disappointed. Rob Zombie's adaptation of Halloween completely ignored the elements of the classic original which garnered on suspense and atmospheric feeling. This version of Halloween is just plain stupid with too many unnecessary scenes, poor acting, too much blood and gore, pathetic dialogue and no suspense whatsoever. I just wonder how John Carpenter must feel watching this new adaptation of Halloween which goes into to much unnecessary detail and contains over the top scenes with no meaning whatsoever. John Carpenter created one of the greatest horror films in history with the conventions of creepy music and suspense. Rob Zombie created one of the worst horror films in history with the conventions of sex, drugs, unnecessary scenes and pointless dialogue. The only thing good about this remake is that we got to find out about Myers childhood and why he became evil. Once Rob Zombie ran out of ideas and things he could do to help improve the movie, he just continued letting Michael Myers keep killing people in order to please the blood-thirsty, new generation of horror fans. Instead of applying his craft and trying to recreate a classic horror film with smart and intelligent elements like John Carpenter and Debra Hill were able to do, he just created a pointless horror film which is a critical failure. Overall this film is an artistic failure full of crude and pointless scenes which only blood thirsty, die hard Rob Zombie fans will enjoy. If you want to watch the real Halloween, I suggest you watch John Carpenters version, the classic 1978 version of Halloween.

1 star Listen to Joey 34!!!
Joey completely sums it all up. The "true" Halloween is John Carpenter's film and not Rob's. Zombie has no talent and it shows in the film. I was very disappointed and you will be too if you watch this movie instead of the 1978 CLASSIC.

5 stars Best remake in a long time!!!
After hearing the news for the remake I was really happy to know that Rob Zombie was directing the movie, instead of some stupid director like Jonathan Liebesman or Glen Morgan thank god!!! The only scene I didn't like was the rape scene he should have kept the origonal scene with Bill Mosley!!

4 stars Great
This version of Halloween had more blood and gore than John Carpenters 1978 classic original. It also had more nudity and language and is definately for a modern horror movie fan. I think this remake of Halloween was very well done, but I don't believe it had the suspence and moments of the original. Once Rob Zombie ran out of subtext is was just more killing and more blood. The acting was very good and the actors really committed to there role. The plot was also great and gave us more background of Michael Myers clidhood and life before he was disturbed and evil. This movie is a great addition to the halloween legacy and is worth watching. However it wasn't able to top the original.

Director Michael Bay (ARMAGEDDON, THE ROCK) uses a tragic romantic triangle to set the stage for the infamous Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in this epic tale of love, loss, and patriotism. When Evelyn (Kate Beckinsale), a beautiful Navy nurse, meets dashing ace Army fighter pilot Rafe (Ben Affleck), the two fall madly in love, only to be separated abruptly when he is called upon to help fight the war in Europe. Unforeseen circumstances lead Evelyn into the arms of Danny (Josh Hartnett), another fighter pilot and Rafe's best friend since childhood. In the meantime, the Japanese military is planning the surprise early morning raid on Hawaii that will pull the United States into World War II. Spectacular special effects vividly recreate the attack in devastating detail as bombs explode, torpedoes shoot through the water, and bullets fly, shaking tranquil Pearl Harbor to its core. Bay deftly captures the patriotism and the loss of innocence of the young men and women who were suddenly thrust into the war. Cuba Gooding, Jr., Jon Voight, Alec Baldwin and Mako also star in this tribute to both the fallen and the survivors of one of the most horrific tragedies ever to occur on American soil. Though perhaps best known for his 1980s hit "Jessie's Girl", Rick Springfield also enjoyed another successful career as an actor, doing credible work in a number of smaller features. In this television movie, Springfield stars as detective Nick Knight, a brooding loner who works the night shift and lives with a horrible secret: he's really a vampire. When Nick is assigned to a particularly gruesome murder, he finds himself saddled with a new partner and digging deeper into a case that pits him against both his immortal nemesis and a psychotic killer. Also the basis for the mid-1990s series FOREVER KNIGHT, NICK KNIGHT is an atmospheric, creepy, and well made thriller. Closed Captioned; Standard Screen; Soundtrack English

Veteran slashers Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees join forces in this combination sequel to the NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET and FRIDAY THE 13TH series. The film begins with a quick recap of both Freddy and Jason's "lives," underscoring their respective motivations to kill and their distinct weaknesses. Freddy (Robert Englund) explains that the present children of Elm St. (including Monica Keena, Jason Ritter, Katherine Isabelle, and Kelly Rowland of Destiny's Child) have no memory of him, and if they don't know he exists, he can't enter their dreams to kill them. Ingeniously, he reaches out to Jason (Ken Kirzinger), the brutish death machine from Camp Crystal Lake, to go on an Elm Street killing spree, hoping a lot of gory murder will jog the town's memory. Jason is up to the task, quickly dispensing with teenager after teenager in suburban homes, cornfields, medical labs and, of course, the forest. Freddy grows jealous over Jason's body count, and so must intervene, setting off a battle royale between the two highly adored slasher heroes across dreamworlds and realities. In another post-modern twist, a character seemingly modeled after Jay from Kevin Smith's films appears in the movie, adding both a comedic element and another level of reality vs. fiction. FREDDY VS. JASON employs a variety of special effects to update these undying series, not the least of which is uniting their once disparate stories.
