An excellent modern soul-jazz outing, Roll with It marks guitarist Corey Christiansen's second outing as a bandleader, and showcases some outstanding playing by the quartet. The pieces are all straightforward soul-jazz compositions, all from the pen of Christiansen, and all give the players, a motley crew from around the country, room to stretch out on extended solos and a general sense of improvisation. Though the compositions provide a core around which to build, the band spends the bulk of their energy jamming around that core, using the easygoing groove as a basis for some quick shots of virtuosity. Christiansen himself, a St. Louis-based guitarist, evokes everyone from Charlie Christian to John Mayer in his playing, with a tendency toward the players of the '60s rooted in his grooves. As much of a groove as Christiansen's got however, it's held up quite a bit by New York Hammond player Pat Bianchi and a driving set of chords that acts both as a basic comping tool and as a vehicle for extended solo grooves worthy of comparisons to the greats. Seattle drummer Matt Jorgensen keeps the rest of the quartet on point with a steady rhythm, and Salt Lake City-based sax player David Halliday rounds out the group with some comping and occasional soloing, though staying in the background for much of the recording. When he does break out for a solo however, he stretches out for dizzying heights. The group works well as a collection of excellent individual soloists, but it's really in the collective, nearly improvised, extended groove that the magic lies here. Thick with funkiness and ripe for a listen. ~ Adam Greenberg
From the clean, rapid-fire soloing of the opening track, to the edgy guitar sounds of "Sideways," guitarist Corey Christiansen exploits the nuances of the instrument, while showcasing an expansive compositional palette on "Roll With It," his third record

Down Beat (p.89) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "This album has a homey feel....'Steele' breaks with the soul-jazz groove as a convincing uptempo swing tune, with the band cohering around the infectious blues theme." JazzTimes (p.81) - "To call this quartet tight and intense is a considerable understatement....Christiansen's facility is in evidence throughout, with particular forcefulness on the title track..." "You Can't Lose What You Ain't Never Had" and "The Same Thing" did not appear on the original version of FOLK SINGER. They were recorded at a separate session in April 1964, three months after FOLK SINGER was released.
The title and cover photo of this 1963 recording were an attempt to cash in on the burgeoning American folk revival, but this is pure acoustic blues. Muddy began his career as a Robert Johnson-style solo acoustic performer, and the tunes on FOLK SINGER hark back to those days. He's accompanied sparsely by Willie Dixon, drummer Clifton James and a young Buddy Guy, who provide a stark, deliberate backdrop for Muddy's rich vocal and expressive ...

| | Renee Arozqueta No Sorrow Tomorrow/Lullagoodbyes CD (2008)
Roll With It CD music
$16.45 BiographyRenee Arozqueta has constructed an engaging modern folk sound on a foundation of classical piano instruction and self-taught guitar skill. With the addition of an accordion to her repertoire in 2007, her sound continued to develop. Her music carries with it a certain realness, that can be tongue and cheek at times; an unvarnished truth hidden by the lyrics of a hopeless romantic, whispered or belted out. Her voice has been compared to the voices of Natalie Merchant and Fiona Apple, but is multifaceted and dynamic.Renee's songs are lyrically grounded. Her music is a base for her poetry; minimalistic, highlighted occasionally by jaunty melody lines and always by her vocal range. Her voice is at times haunting. But it can be full of vitality, playful, and at times, playfully cynical as she looks through the starry eyes of a romantic at a world that is anything but.Renee Arozqueta recorded her self-titled first album at the age of 16 at the behest of her teacher and mentor, Kevin Stever. Her next album, The Second Take, came at the age of 20. Both albums thus far had been largely piano based. With the third, Plain Jane and Pistol Pete, at 21, things began to coalesce into a cohesive sound identity. The poetry in her lyrics improved and she gained more control of her voice.A two ...
