Jazz For Special Momen album
$13.69 Diana Krall's first studio outing since she and husband Elvis Costello became the proud parents of twin boys, 2009's QUIET NIGHTS finds the jazz singer/pianist turning in a serene and pleasantly subdued set. Krall breezes through a few bossa nova standards, most notably "The Girl from Ipanema" (here gender-reversed to "The Boy...") and the title track (originally "Corcovado"), both penned by the legendary Antonio Carlos Jobim. QUIET NIGHTS isn't solely a Brazilian-themed outing, however, as Krall also spends plenty of time in the comfortable realm of the Great American Songbook, offering up elegant orchestral renditions of "I've Grown Accustomed to His Face" and the Bacharach/David gem "Walk On By" that benefit from her supremely smoky vocals and graceful delivery.

| | Jeff Hamilton Symbiosis CD (2009)
Jazz For Special Momen CD music
$12.59 Jeff Hamilton's recordings have always been focused as straight-ahead and mainstream as your typical superhighway, with occasional time for rest stops, gassing up, and sleepovers. While always a good listen, Hamilton and his non-stop rotation of up-and-coming pianists and bassists never really pushed the envelope, staying the course set by his mentor, the late, great bassist Ray Brown, and other California-based coolsters. With Symbiosis, though, there's a change in the weather with the addition of extraordinary young talent in pianist Tamir Hendelman and bassist Christoph Luty. This is not at all to say that Hamilton's music had no fire, guts, or glory, but the difference in internal energy heard on this recording is noticeable. Hamilton is also playing brushes for the most part, instead of sticks, and he proves the finest exponent of that style of jazz performance since Ed Thigpen. There's some truly extraordinary playing going on here, evident right off the bat on a two-fisted, bluesy take of the otherwise corny "You Make Me Feel So Young," where the mellow mood is trumped by some deft key changes and interplay. Their version of the George Gershwin chestnut "Fascinating Rhythm" is loaded with multiple rhythm changes that seem telepathic but in fact are well rehearsed, while a hopped up take on the Miles Davis obscurity "The Serpent's Tooth" is saturated with Hamilton's fills and drum inserts as Hendelman and Luty jam away on the modified melody. The tour de force track is Hamilton's original "Samba De Martelo," as all three musicians take great poetic license and liberties in an amazing discourse that sounds free and improvised like most great jazz should, but is a virtuosic ...

| | Miles Davis Tribute To Jack Johnson CD (1970) Remastered
Jazz For Special Momen album
$7.59 A TRIBUTE TO JACK JOHNSON was originally conceived as the soundtrack for a documentary on the life of the first African American heavyweight boxing champion, but the album stands on its own as one of the most brilliant, compelling fusion recordings ever made. This is due in large part to the increasing influence of rock and funk on Miles's aesthetic, to the superb musicians (including Davis himself-- who turns in some stunningly vigorous solos), and in part to the production skills of Teo Macero, who collaged the album together from numerous jam sessions into two lengthy, majestic tracks.
The infectious boogaloo groove of "Right Off" has John McLaughlin's crunching, wah-wah-driven power chords dancing fervently around the relentless backbeat of Fender bassist Michael Henderson and drummer Billy Cobham. Gone are the trappings of bebop harmonies and modern jazz rhythms, save for Davis's dramatic solo, with its long, linear melodies and nasty blues inflections. The haunting, surreal "Yesternow" is an abstract update of the classic Miles/Gil Evans mood piece. The groove accrues momentum in a dreamy, backwards manner, keying off Henderson's hypnotic modal patterns and McLaughlin's speech-like figures, culminating in an atonal distortion solo by free jazz pioneer Sonny ...
| | Spyro Gyra Road Scholars CD (1997)
Jazz For Special Momen CD music
$12.65 If you don't like Lite Jazz, Contemporary Jazz, Instrumental Pop, whatever you want to call it; stuff that wouldn't sound out of place in between David Sanborn and Kenny G on your local radio station, you probably shouldn't even be reading this far, because Spyro Gyra are avatars of the style. If their bag is your bag, however, you can feel comfortable diving right in to the sonic tapestry that is ROAD SCHOLARS. The band's synth-driven instrumental assault, led by keyboardist Tom Schuman, has remained consistent throughout their years of recording and touring together, and the formula here is very much in keeping with their trademark sound.
Funky drums, complex, dexterous keyboard work, and spare, melodic sax lines abound. The title refers to the fact every track here (with the exception of the newly recorded version of "Best Friends") was recorded live in a different U.S. city. The kicker is that all of these live tracks sound studio-perfect, both in performance and sound quality, which are two of the main things that people have come to expect from the men of Spyro Gyra.
Recorded live between March and October 1997.
Personnel: Julio Fernandez (vocals, guitar); Jay Beckenstein (saxophone); Tom Schuman (keyboards); Scott Ambush (bass guitar); Joel Rosenblatt (drums, percussion); Jason Miles (drum programming).

Jazz For Special Momen songs
$13.15 John Rives grew up in the ‘70s in Athens, GA listening to Credence Clearwater Revival, Johnny Winter, The Allman Brothers, The Zombies, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Yes, The Rolling Stones, and Frank Zappa just to name a few. Other influences were Leo Kottke and Christopher Parkening. John studied classical guitar at the University of Georgia for two years and played in a number of rock bands during high school and college. A couple years after moving to California in 1981, John met guitar-player/singer/songwriter, Rick Baugnon, and the two musicians hit it off immediately. They began writing songs together and produced a recording of four acoustic instrumentals songs. Both musicians were influenced heavily by Leo Kottke, and were now listening to Michael Hedges, who was a pioneer with the acoustic guitar.Life circumstances led to a long break in musical recording and performance for both John and Rick, but they eventually got together again in 1997 in Nevada City, California, and recorded their first CD titled Threshold. John has played with many local musicians in the Nevada City area since that time.Rick Baugnon grew up in New Orleans, LA and Beaumont, TX. - two cities with strong musical roots. He also studied classical guitar and was heavily influenced by The Beatles. Rick has performed in bands in New Orleans and Seattle, ...
