| | Charlotte Church Dream A Dream CD (2000)
After Work Hour
$6.09 The little girl with the big voice is back for a selection of popular Christmas songs and carols, ranging from the medieval "Coventry Carol" to the brand new title track, whose chorus will be recognized by classical music fans as the "Pavan" of Gabriel Faure. In between are pop standards like "Winter Wonderland" and Mel Torme's "Christmas Song" as well as some less familiar fare such as the delicate calypso "Mary's Boy Child" and the Welsh "Draw Tua Bethlehem". Much of the program features big, lush orechestral arrangements with Church's voice at full throttle, but several tracks deliver less most effectively, such as the lovely, simple choral accompaniment to Michael Praetorius' "Lo How a Rose E'er Blooming" or the opening verse of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," sung solo with no instruments at all.

Recorded at Blackheath Concert Halls and Air Studios, London, England.

$26.29 Few things are as beautiful as the fall of an autumn leaf and the changing hues of a distant landscape. Nature and the seasons are beautifully captured in Andr‚'s Seasons, from the tales whispered by the Vienna Woods, to the beautiful spring blossoms from Japan (Sakura), and Ceylon (the Lakm‚ "Flower Duet", forever entrenched in our minds thanks to its use in the British Airways commercials!). Roses get pride of place too! Birds flit across the landscape in the form of village swallows (Strauss) and gliding swans (Tchaikovsky and Saint-Sa‰ns) to the mythical Australian `thorn bird'. No "seasons" anthology would be complete without Vivaldi's Four Seasons, from which we here the quiet musings of Winter, and the CD is rounded off with a Christmas perennial - Winter Wonderland.
