A two-disc, 29-track track anthology that spans the group's entire career, THE ESSENTIAL COMMISSIONED is the best starting point for new fans. This black gospel vocal group, whose take on contemporary gospel is heavily influenced by modern R&B elements, is a contemporary analogue to the likes of previous pop-gospel crossover acts like the Soul Children and the Staple Stingers. Highlights include the sweet ballad "Everlasting Love" and the nine-minute multi-part epic, "Ordinary Just Won't Do." | | Susan Boyle I Dreamed A Dream CD (2009)
Essential Commissioned music CDs
$9.55 Susan Boyle's grand unveiling on Britain's Got Talent was with a song from Les Miserables - the very song that lends this album its title -- and if she could become an international sensation based on a show tune standard, there's no reason for her to change her approach on her debut, since that's the sound that made her a star. Plus, a large part of Boyle's appeal is that she's a middle-aged woman recalling a bygone era when there were singers that appealed to an adult audience by offering soft, stately versions of pop hits and standards. That time was the late `60s and early `70s, and apart from a rather faithful version of Madonna's "You'll See," I Dreamed a Dream could very well have been released all those years ago, as it mixes up the show tunes, gospel, and Christmas carols with covers of Skeeter ...
| | Jimmy Buffett Buffet Hotel CD (2009)
Essential Commissioned songs
$9.74 Since Jimmy Buffett never leaves his comfort zone, it's hard to call 2009's Buffet Hotel a return to roots but, in a way, it is. Discounting the mock rap on "Turn Up the Heat and Chill the Rosé," this album doesn't even have the lingering country and reggae flavors that seasoned 2006's Take the Weather with You, with all of the songs riding a cool, mellow country-rock wave, the kind that has been his stock-in-trade since the `70s. There's a difference between being part of a tradition and being stuck in the past and Buffett is surely in the former, not shying away from the new millennial ...

Essential Commissioned CD music
$8.99 Pink's insistently hooky, attitude-filled pop-rock has kept the singer a fixture on the radio and on singles charts since the early 2000s. The artist's fifth effort, FUNHOUSE, doesn't tamper with the formula: Pink's ...

Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1989, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
This enjoyable LP presents a relaxed, agreeable live date, but not one that generates sparks. Pianist Bobby Timmons, who made his name as a writer and invaluable part of the rhythm section in the Art Blakey and Cannonball Adderley bands of the late '50s and early '60s, is a different proposition in his role here as a leader. Although able and energetic, ...

| | James Roots You're Everything CD (2006)
Essential Commissioned album
$11.39 It seems that praise and worship music has become increasingly more popular over the past 10 years in mainstream Christian music, but praise and worship is more than just a genre of music to James Roots, it is his passion and as he would say, his calling. James has been around music his whole life. His dad, Tommy Roots, was considered one of the best steel guitar players in Country music and even though Tommy has gone to be with the Lord, his passion for music has left an imprint on James. I remember hearing my dad play his steel guitar every day at 6:00 a.m. in the morning....and I would think, Its too early.....I want to sleep some more! But that was my dads passion. Before I knew it, music became a big part of my life as well. James started playing acoustic guitar at age 12 and by the time he was a teenager he started singing on stage. James distinctly remembers being about 17 years old and singing at the Texas Armadillo with a band named Dixie before a sold out crowd. After singing his song, he remembers thinking, What am I leaving with these people? He knew they were being entertained, but was that it? After playing guitar in Young Life for a while, James started to feel a tug from God. Then at age 21, James got radically saved. It wasnt long before he got involved in the praise band at his church. During the next few years, he joined a couple of different Christian rock bands. He jokingly says that God saved me from Country and put me in Rock N Roll. He then played bass with some friends in a praise band at a local church and was there a few months when the praise and worship leader graduated from college and left town to start his career. It seemed like a natural move for James to step up to play his guitar and lead worship. It was at this point when James ...
