| | Tony Bennett Essential 3.0 CDs (2002)
Minha Praia CD music
$16.79 It's almost shocking to realize that before this collection's release, the career of musical legend Tony Bennett had been extensively anthologized only in box-set format and never by a career-spanning two-disc compilation. Upon inspection, it seems like the ultimate no-brainer--pick some of the mainly highlights from this vocal sensation's 50-year career, put them in chronological order, and let the magic happen.
Happen it does, as we're treated to gems from every phase of Bennett's oeuvre. Casual listeners may be surprised to learn that the '50s found Tony successfully reinventing Hank Williams's "Cold Cold Heart" alongside more customary fare such as signature song "Rags to Riches." No one will be shocked at the very necessary inclusion of the '60s comeback smash "I Left My Heart in San Francisco," but those who think of Bennett as an artifact belonging only to Sinatra's time will be educated by the subsequent material included here. From the sinuously jazzy "Steppin' Out with My Baby" to a moving take on the Elllington ...

'The Ivy Ceiling' features the vocal styling of Sting on the track, "Ma Durga" and a soulful spoken word introduction by Hip-Hop mogul Russell Simmons. In addition, Roderick and Anisa Romero of the Seattle-based underground band, Sky Cries Mary, are featured on backup vocals throughout the compilation. 'We are thrilled with the release of our debut album,' said Sri Michael. 'This is the realization of a long-held dream to blend a variety of influences and sounds that would appeal to a large cross-section of music lovers and bring them a message of universal peace and love. 'Long influenced by spirituality and particularly the practice of yoga, Sri Michael ...
| | Andrew Oliver Kora Band Just 4 U CD (2009)
Minha Praia CD music
$11.39 The Andrew Oliver Kora Band combines elements of jazz and traditional West African music to create a unique soul-stirring sound. In the wake of his 2007 tour of West Africa with the U.S. State Department's Rhythm Road: American Music Abroad, pianist and composer Andrew Oliver was inspired to dive deeper into the relationship between jazz and West African music. His exploration eventually led to the founding of the Kora Ensemble, featuring atypical instrumentation that highlights Kane Mathis on the 21-string Kora, a traditional harp from West Africa. Kane is one of the most accomplished Kora players in the U.S., having spent many years in The Gambia studying with master musicians. Also featured are Jim Knodle on trumpet, Brady Millard-Kish on bass, and Mark DiFlorio on drums. The talented ensemble performs both original compositions designed to explore the many possibilities of its unique timbre as well as traditional and modern songs from West Africa arranged specifically for the band.-The Band:Andrew Oliver - piano, keyboardKane Mathis - kora, guitarJim Knodle - trumpetBrady Millard-Kish - acoustic bass, electric bassMark DiFlorio - drums, percussionAndrew Oliver, piano and keyboardAndrew Oliver is a pianist and composer from Portland, Oregon. He grew up playing classical music but switched to jazz at the beginning of high school, when he began taking lessons from Randy Porter. He lived in New Orleans from 2002 until 2005, where he studied jazz at Loyola University and performed as both a bandleader and sideman. After evacuating from Hurricane Katrina in the summer of 2005, he returned to Portland and finished his studies in music and French at Portland State University. He has studied with Matt Lemmler, Michael Pellera, and Darrell Grant, and performed with many musicians in New Orleans and Portland including Devin Phillips, Irvin Mayfield, and Glen Moore. He is currently active in many groups including his own sextet, the Portland Jazz Composers' Ensemble, which he recently co-founded, and Devin Phillips' group New Orleans Straight Ahead. Kane Mathis, kora and guitarAt 16 years old, after hearing many African records from all over the continent, Kane felt a strong interest in pursuing West African music and did so by incorporating the styles into his ...
