Sanctified By Satans Blood album
$12.29 BY A THREAD is Gov't Mule's first studio album since HIGH & MIGHTY was issued in 2006. Since that time, bassist Andy Hess has been replaced by Jorgen Carlsson, though Hess appears on two tracks at the end of the album. Carlsson's playing style is much more aggressive than Hess', and is therefore closer - in spirit anyway - to Gov't Mule's original bassist, the late Allen Woody, though he possesses an adventurous sense of time and is harmonically more colorful than either Woody or Hess. Carlsson and drummer Matt Abst are a solid match, since Abst is a drummer used to shifting time signatures and allowing the unexpected in while still driving a band. The band's keyboardist and rhythm guitarist, Danny Louis, is a shape-shifter, playing to whatever is needed in a given track. His manner of coloring sounds inside and around a particular tune's framework is a large part of what makes Gov't Mule's sound so fresh here - despite the fact that they don't stray far from what they do best. Warren Haynes and his guitar are, as usual, front and center, his guitar screaming, his big throaty growl hammering down lyrics like a Southern fire-and-brimstone preacher with earthshaking soul. The material on this set is tight; there is less jamming but Gordie Johnson's production and mixing equalize everything at ten, making it feel like the disc is recorded live.
The set opens with the pulsing bass throb of "Broke Down on the ...

| | Shrine: The Rarest Soul Label Vol. 2 CD (2000) (Import) United Kingdom
Sanctified By Satans Blood music CDs
$20.15 Contains 24 tracks, including six previously unreleased tracks.
In conjunction with the first volume of Kent's overview of the Shrine label, this rounds up all the remaining releases by this small mid-1960s Washington, DC-based soul record company, adding five previously unreleased tracks as well. Like the first volume (simply titled Shrine: The Rarest Soul Label Ever), it has well-produced, upbeat (usually), yet rather generic mid-1960s period soul music, with none of the performers being names of any notoriety. Motown, Curtis Mayfield, and New York uptown soul are ably echoed at various points, without much distinction or originality being thrown into the mix. This isn't to sneeze at a compilation that brings together some incredibly rare sides that are avidly sought by serious soul collectors, but it's a caution that it's not going to bowl over non-specialists. For those who like hearing enjoyable knockoffs of other formulas, there's plenty on order here, well-annotated as is Kent's wont. The DC Blossoms' "Hey Boy" sounds much like Motown's more energetic girl groups, and Bobby Reed's previously unreleased "Caldonia Brown" is in the style of the mid-1960s Impressions. In fact there are enough nods to famous harmony groups that it sometimes feel like a gig where the Temptations, the Impressions, and the Miracles had to cancel and the local promoter had to come up with the best similar-sounding substitutes. Some of the source material was so scarce that a ...
| | James Brown's Funky People (Part 2) CD (1988)
Sanctified By Satans Blood songs
$7.19 The second volume of material compiled from James Brown's People Records label isn't quite as strong as the first, as it reaches for more obscurities -- but those obscurities can be interesting, especially Brown's collaboration with Hank Ballard on "From the Love Side." Again, Brown wrote (or co-wrote), arranged, and produced much of the material, appearing on vocals several times, and the J.B.'s are featured heavily, whether as a unit or with individual members stepping out as solo acts. The highlights are Bobby Byrd's two 1971 R&B hits, "I Know You Got Soul" and "Hot Pants -- I'm Coming, Coming, I'm Coming"; also featured are Marva Whitney, Lyn Collins, and Fred Wesley, among others. ~ Steve Huey
