THE LAST CHAIR VIOLINIST casts light on Houston rapper South Park Mexican, five-plus years into his 45-year sentence (and for a crime unlikely to elicit much sympathy), as he comes to terms with the mess of his life and the reality of his situation. It's a searing pain, an earth-shattering sadness, that comes through on the mournful, haunted record, his second post-incarceration. Tracks like "Swim," the title track, and "The Ghost," emanate loss with a dark eloquence on the MC's most mature record to date. It's not an easy listen (it rivals the Geto Boys for sheer horror), but it's a stirring portrait of a dream decapitated.

This album is the bomb, no doubt he still has talent to drop 100 more albums. The bonus CD is filled with many of my favorite songs. Buy it cuz this is gonna sell fast.

For his first album under his distribution deal with Universal Records, South Park Mexican seems quite comfortable with his increasing popularity, rapping like a veteran here. It's nice to hear him handling most of the album's rapping duties after his previous release, The Purity Album, seemed more like a compilation issued under his name. The production is a bit more polished here than on previous SPM albums, and the rhymes flow much more fluidly than ever before, making it arguably the most well-crafted SPM album to date. If there is one major problem, though, it involves SPM's level of comfort -- he almost seems too comfy here, knowing that he's finally crossed over into major label territory. One somewhat misses the inspired efforts of older, rawer albums such as Hustle Town. ~ Jason Birchmeier

Since forming in 2001, New Jersey band Fairmont (guitarist/vocalist Neil Sabatino, guitarist/vocalist Kevin Metz, drummer Andy Applegate and bassist John "Hambone" Mcguire) has already recorded two full-length records, four EPs and toured the U.S. three times. During that time the band has won over fans across the country and shared the bill with artists including Nada Surf, Ted Leo and Val Emmich.Fairmont evolved out of Eyeball Records band Pencey Prep, a group whose label was made famous by fellow New Jersey rockers, Thursday.
