Standard Screen; Soundtrack English; Special Edition This vignette-laden, nostalgic view of Christmastime in 1940s Indiana follows nine-year-old Ralphie, who desperately wants a Red Ryder BB Gun for Christmas--and is waging an all-out campaign to convince his reluctant parents that the toy will be safe in his hands. By turns warped and winsome, the comedy follows Ralphie as he prepares for the big day with his rather idiosyncratic family. Based on the novel by humorist Jean Shepherd (who also narrates the film), A CHRISTMAS STORY gained popularity long after its theatrical run, through frequent holiday broadcasts that turned its schoolyard "triple-dog" dares, family neuroses, and childhood indignities into a Yuletide tradition. Color by Medallion.
Additional cast: Ian Petrella (Randy), R.D. Robb (Schwartz), and Tedde Moore (Miss Shields). Christmas Story Reviews: "...A version of Christmas as it exists only in the imagination....Shepherd has always been best at evoking the texture of life as it used to be in his midwest childhood..."
-- Jagr., Variety "...There are many small but perfect moment in A CHRISTMAS STORY....There is a real knowledge of human nature beneath the comedy..."
-- Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times "...Think of it as IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE for post-Reagan generations as it morphs from cult to classic 20 years down the road..."
-- Alynda Wheat, Entertainment Weekly "...[A] modern-classic telling of Jean Shepard's '40s-based Midwest yarn..."

My home town Of course it's one of the greatest Christmas movies ever but, the first scene in the movie is downtwn Cleveland, Ohio, my home town. I'll never forget watching the Lionel trains in Higbee's department store window back in the forties and fifties. One of my best friend's Mother has a cameo in Higbee's which made it even more special. Submitted by Reedbigdogs (Black Creek, WI) Was This Review Helpful? The Best Family Movie for any time of the year I have always loved Christmas movies\stories. One of my favorites even at my age is Christmas Story. It is such a movie to watch and to recapture your own childhood through the eyes of your own children. To watch the family struggle to understand the meaning of the real Christmas is such a joy to see, not only at Christmas but at any time of the year is a joy to me. I think personally that this film protrays the real meaning of the "Holiday Seasoning". Thanks for having it available on DVD. You will have my bussiness no matter where I am and I thank you.

Christmas Story film
$13.35 On his first studio album since 1995's CONVERSATION PIECE, R&B legend Stevie Wonder revisits familiar ground from earlier eras in his career while keeping with contemporary pop sounds. Although certain tracks conjure up the vibe of early Wonder outings (the funky "Please Don't Hurt My Baby" and the sunny, upbeat "Positivity," which features additional vocals by his daughter Aisha Morris), other tunes (the smooth "From the Bottom of My Heart" and the romantic "Passionate Raindrops") recall his more polished '80s period.
A TIME 2 LOVE is bookended by two of its strongest songs--"If Your Love Cannot Be Moved," an urgent duet with gospel singer Kim Burrell, and the potent title track, which features neo-soul diva India Arie. A few of Wonder's most famous friends also make subtle instrumental contributions, including Paul McCartney and Prince, but none of the guest artists distract from Wonder's excellent performances and meticulously crafted tunes. Almost a decade in the making, A TIME 2 LOVE reveals that Wonder's talents haven't diminished a bit, and fans are sure to agree that it was worth the wait.

Christmas Story review
$9.89 Canadian director David Cronenberg, whose impressive oeuvre includes such disparate works as THE DEAD ZONE, THE FLY, DEAD RINGERS, M. BUTTERFLY, and SPIDER, has made what might be the best film of his career with A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE. Loosely based on the graphic novel by John Wagner and Vince Locke, the movie stars Viggo Mortensen as Tom Stall, a quiet, easygoing family man who runs a diner in a small Indiana town. But when two dangerous criminals come into the restaurant prepared to wreak havoc, Stall turns hero and shoots them both. After Stall's story is blasted all over the media, Philly mobster Carl Fogaty (an excellent Ed Harris) shows up, claiming that Tom is actually former hit man Joey Cusack--and they've got some important business to finish. While Stall insists that Fogaty is mistaken, his family--his wife, Edie (Maria Bello); teenage son, Jack (Ashton Holmes); and young daughter, Sarah (Heidi Hayes)--gets dragged into the danger that constantly threatens to explode. Cronenberg, whose films often deal with the fantastical, the futuristic, and the supernatural, has done a masterly job creating a wholly believable modern world where evil lurks just around the corner. Howard Shore's tense, moody music complements the outstanding acting in a violent, powerful film that is not to be missed.
Viggo Mortensen, Maria Bello, Ed Harris, and William Hurt star in this David Cronenberg psychological thriller.

Christmas Story DVD
$24.59 The outrageous Little Richard burst on the rock & roll scene with a succession of high-energy recordings in the mid 1950s. Fueled by an unfettered New Orleans backbeat, he combined gospel fervor and orgasmic delight in equal doses, hammering the piano keys with barely checked passion. HERE'S LITTLE RICHARD contains a number of Richard's essential performances, including "The Girl Can't Help It," "Tutti Frutti," and "Keep a Knockin'," with almost every track an integral part of pop history.
| | Van Morrison At The Movies Soundtrack Hits At The Movies: Soundtrack Hits CD (2007)
Christmas Story movie DVD
$11.39 This strange concept for a retrospective--collecting the many times Van Morrison's music has been used in popular films--pairs obvious Morrison classics such as "Gloria" and "Wild Night" with lesser-known gems such as "Queen of the Slipstream" and "Irish Heartbeat." The question one has to wonder--given the availability of superior hits collections--is why?
Perhaps Martin Scorsese's use of "Comfortably Numb"--taken from a riveting performance with Roger Waters and the Band at the fall of the Berlin Wall--in 2006's THE DEPARTED was the necessary nudge. AT THE MOVIES also includes live versions of "Caravan," "Domino," "Moondance," and "Into the Mystic" that should satisfy hardcore fans who already have the studio albums. And although AT THE MOVIES ultimately confuses, newcomers should find some thrills here. This is Van the Man, after all.

Christmas Story video
$14.39 Hollywood studios are notorious for liberally borrowing ideas from each other, with the resulting clutch of similarly-themed films often bewildering the public as they try to decide which movie to go and see. In 2005 Bennett Miller directed CAPOTE, an Oscar-winning dramatization of Truman Capote's traumatic experiences writing the celebrated novel IN COLD BLOOD. In 2006 Douglas McGrath (COMPANY MAN) directed INFAMOUS, a movie that follows exactly the same premise. Although it's difficult to see why such a story would need to be immortalized in celluloid for a second time, McGrath does throw in a few tricks to help separate the two films. Talking head interviews with some of Capote's contemporaries, such as Gore Vidal and Babe Paley, are used, and the movie has a lighter--almost comedic at times--feel to it than Miller's movie.
The basic premise of INFAMOUS is exactly the same as that of CAPOTE, so we witness Toby Jones's Capote traveling from New York to Kansas, settling into the town, interviewing the murderers, and developing an obsession with one of them--Perry Smith (Daniel Craig). Despite the similarities, salvation can be found in the performance of Jones, who lights up the screen with a performance that closely rivals Philip Seymour Hoffman's turn as the infamous author. Other notable appearances come from Sandra Bullock, who just about manages to nail Harper Lee; Sigourney Weaver and Isabella Rossellini, who both camp up their roles as socialites; Jeff Daniels as the detective who befriends Capote; and Gwyneth Paltrow, who makes a brief appearance as the singer Peggy Lee.
Tony Jones, Sandra Bullock, Daniel Craig, Peter Bogdanovich, Jeff Daniels, Hope Davis, Gwyneth Paltro, Isabella Rossellini, Juliet Stevenson, and Sigourney Weaver star in this film about Truman Capote.

Christmas Story film
$12.99 With soaring photography that circles from above then swoops in for the action, TROY is Wolfgang Petersen's majestic presentation of the classic Greek legend. It tells the story of an epic battle over Helen (Diane Kruger), the queen of Sparta, who is kidnapped by her lover Paris (Orlando Bloom), the prince of Troy. This infuriates Helen's husband Menelaus (Brendan Gleeson), whose brother Agamemnon (Brian Cox) convinces him to invade Troy. They recruit Achilles (Brad Pitt), the best warrior in Greece, whose bravery, quick feet, and remarkable swordsmanship (not to mention tanned biceps, short kilts, and blond locks) have earned him a reputation that is almost as impressive as his ego. Achilles agrees to fight for Sparta, if only for the fame it will bring him. Even Achilles's mother, in a touching scene, advises him to forget mortal achievements and become a hero who will be remembered throughout history. Along with the invasion of Troy, a series of duels must also be fought: Paris, who is heartbreaking in his lovestruck naiveté, must go up against the enraged Menelaus, and Achilles must settle a score with Hector (Eric Bana), who is fiercely dedicated to protecting his brother Paris and their father, the frail king Priam (Peter O'Toole). When the war finally ignites in its massive proportions, the action is awesome. And as the increasingly dramatic events play out, TROY earns its own timeless reputation among other action-adventure epics such as GLADIATOR and SPARTACUS.
This unrated version includes 30 minutes of amazing new footage added by filmmaker Wolfgang Petersen. Brad Pitt, Eric Bana, and Orlando Bloom star in this director's cut.
