Holding the estimable position of lead guitarist for John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Texas blues-rocker Buddy Whittington sports some impressive credentials. Nevertheless, his self-titled solo debut succeeds on its own terms. Whittington's own work owes more to fellow Longhorn fretmaster Stevie Ray Vaughan than to Mayall, and his piercing, tensile guitar licks and earthy, down-to-business vocal style give the album a unified feel while showing that this recording is more than just a busman's holiday.

Personnel: Buddy Whittington (vocals, guitar); Michael Mayes (guitar); Patrick Gage (tenor saxophone); Chris Borin (trumpet); Dave Richards (trombone); Michael Hamilton (piano, organ); Rex Mauney (Hammond b-3 organ); Wayne Six (bass instrument, bass guitar); Mike Gage (drums, drum, percussion).

Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) 5 stars

5 stars An amazing guitarist
Buddy ranks up there in my list of top three favorite guitarists. He certainly more than held his own on the John Mayall 70th Birthday DVD/CD. In fact, he stole the show in my opinion. His sound, phrasing and style is unique. I enjoy all of the songs on his CD and each one of them has something to say regarding our times. Love the blues but this is not the same old stuff you're already accustomed to hearing. Of course, Buddy's guitar always speaks for itself. He is truly a nice guy who appreaciates his fans. Buy the CD and make a point of seeing him live.

5 stars John Mayal's axe man
First time I saw Buddy Whittington was on a dvd with Mayal, he is definitely an artist that deserves more recognition. If you like Texas blues,SRV, Billy Gibbons , you can't go wrong here.

Johnny Otis 1945-1947 CD  (2002)

Buddy Whittington
CD $18.05  Top 500
Growing up among Afro-Americans in Berkeley, CA, Greek-American Johnny Otis (born John Veliotes) always identified strongly with people of color. Before he had attained the age of 20 he was gigging with black jazz bands throughout the Southwest, and eventually organized an ensemble deliberately patterned after Count Basie's orchestra. This highly charged album of historical musical artifacts documents the very beginning of Johnny Otis' recording career. With one apparently unobtainable exception, the Classics Blues & Rhythm Series has assembled all of Otis' Excelsior recordings, made in Los Angeles between 1945 and 1947. This provides background and context for his more well-known Savoy material, and indeed for everything this amazing person accomplished during the second half of the 20th century. Otis' first act as a recording bandleader was to borrow Jimmy Rushing from Count Basie! Rushing sounds right at home with this group, which included tenor saxophonist Paul Quinichette, pianist Bill Doggett, and bassist Curtis Counce. During "Preston's Love Mansion," as Doggett quotes the famous riff from Dizzy Gillespie's "Salt Peanuts," the band hollers "Johnny Otis!" instead. And well they might, for during this exciting number and indeed ...

Tommy Castro Gratitude CD  (2003)

Buddy Whittington
CD $9.35  4.7 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
From the moment Tommy Castro and his band began playing their distinctive blend of blues, soul, and rock, in and around the San Francisco Bay Area in 1991, fans and critics alike have been enthralled both by his exceptional song writing ability and his passionate performances. One of America's leading blues publications, Blues Review, said, "Castro's energy and charisma leap right out ..." Musician Magazine said of the San Jose, California native, "Castro could be a star", and Playboy gushed, "Worshipped for his guitar virtuosity, Castro throws a bit more rock and two bits of soul into his basic blues mix... He has the voice, the band and the guitar to pull it off." Hailed from the outset as one of the most electrifying and compelling live acts working today, (he's been an indispensable fixture on both the club and festival circuit in the US and abroad, touring with artists such as BB King, Robert Cray, Johnny Lang, and the late John Lee Hooker), The Tommy Castro Band has also proven its studio prowess with several highly regarded albums and continued airplay on hundreds of radio stations across America and around the world. In fact, both his "Right As Rain" and "Live At The Fillmore" releases spend multiple weeks near the top of the prestigious Billboard Blues chart. His original material keys a repertoire that has earned him a reputation as one of America's leading blues exponents as well as one of its most passionate purveyors. Guilty ...

While MUSICALLY RICH...AND FAMOUS documents the second half of British blues godfather Alexis Korner's career, KORNERSTONED adopts a more comprehensive approach, following the pioneering singer/guitarist from the very beginning of his musical life, all the way through every subsequent phase of his development. So we get not only his mid-1960s work with burgeoning blues-rock giants like Paul Rodgers and Steve Marriott, but also his `50s skiffle recordings (basically the British version of jug-band music) with the Ken Colyer band and his own skiffle group, and ...

Gary Moore Bad For You Baby CD  (2008)

Buddy Whittington
CD $10.49  4.8 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Another year, another Gary Moore blues-rock album nearly interchangeable with the last. That's no problem for fans or even newcomers, because despite the surface similarities between releases, Moore never seems to be going through the motions for the sake of further bulking up his already substantial catalog. His tough guitar lines remain biting yet classy, and his underappreciated voice is strong and convincing on originals and covers that nail all of the blues-rock bases without sounding rote. While there are no surprises here, Bad for You Baby is far from a disappointment. Moore continues a string of rugged, post-hard rock, power blues that he has carved his niche in since 1990's Still Got the Blues. He applies his throaty vocals and feral guitar to a pair of Muddy Waters tunes to impressive effect. No one will mistake his versions of Waters' "Walking Through the Park" or "Someday Baby" for the classic Chess era nuggets they are. Yet Moore's rocked up attack hits the mark for being relatively faithful to their melodies even as he wields his power blues sledgehammer. Moore boogies through J.B. Lenoir's "Mojo Boogie" ...

M Ward Post-War CD  (2006)

Buddy Whittington
CD $12.19  Top 500 Audio Samples
The title of M. Ward's fifth full-length, POST-WAR, begs the question, post which war? From early 20th-century folk blues to Tin Pan Alley hooks to the various indie-rock schools of the early 2000s, Ward's music works as a suitable elegy for the wounded and dead from across the landscape of American history. Equipped with a voice that is at once rough-hewn and tender, Ward sings about trials of the heart and the soul with a lyrical approach that is touching, evocative, and poetically cryptic. And while his songs can recall the rustic, bluesy charm of a train-hopping troubadour ("Rollercoaster;" "Requiem"), ...

For the last five decades, the name King Tutt has symbolized excellence in stage performance, vocal talent and instrumental mastery.
