Before concentrating on jazz, Dutch singer Fay Claassen studied classical dance. To a degree, Claassen applies the discipline of the latter to the former. She's not a belter but a lithe, discerning vocalist, improvising as a horn player might. Her 2006 disc, TWO PORTRAITS OF CHET BAKER, found her vocally reproducing the trumpet parts in renditions of the landmark Mulligan/Baker quartet's tunes. RED HOT finds her in a more traditional setting, interpreting Cole Porter songs backed by a piano trio. Claassen's intimate, musicianly approach serves these classic songs well.
