| | Randy Klein Flowing CD Randy Klein Discography of CDs
Randy Klein has had many musical interests during his career, ranging from musical theater, pop, R&B, country, and jazz. But this outing is one focused on solo jazz improvisations, all recorded in a single evening. Given that the pianist has done a lot of writing for theater, it is not surprising that many of these improvisations sound like compositions, though most of them have a meditative, pastoral flavor to them. Unlike some solo piano improvisers, Klein doesn't find himself sticking to vamps in a holding pattern as he searches for the next idea, so his lyricism never gets lost in the process. It is easy to imagine some of these pieces being used in a documentary or feature film. Each of the dozen performances was recorded in one take without editing or overdubs, while he explains in his liner notes that six other improvisations recorded the same night were omitted because they didn't measure up to the standards of the dozen he selected. While some listeners might be tempted to classify Randy Klein's playing as being new age (as some labeled Keith Jarrett's solo improvisations), his inventiveness and lyricism put him in the jazz camp, though he doesn't easily fit into any particular style. ~ Ken Dryden

Flowing album
$14.38 Orchestral and choral arrangements of rock songs have been a curious subgenre ever since the mid-'60s when Andrew Loog Oldham arranged The Rolling Stones Songbook for syrupy strings, but The Kinks Choral Collection stands apart from the pack for the simple reason that it's not the project of some associate or admirer, but rather chief Kink Ray Davies. His very presence as arranger and lead vocal means The Kinks Choral Collection isn't nearly as stuffy and middlebrow as so many of these orchestral rock ...

Beginning with Louis Armstrong, through Harry James and Bobby Hackett of the Jackie Gleason Orchestra, the trumpet was once a king in pop music. This was true even in '60s-era easy listening, as demonstrated by the success of Al Hirt, Herb Alpert, and the ultra-shrewd German musician Bert Kaempfert, ...

| | K D Lang Invincible Summer CDs (2000)
Flowing music CDs
$10.89 Since abandoning the neo-country sound cultivated on her first three albums, K.D. Lang has spent the new few albums in chanteuse mode, poking around in a playland of sophisticated pop. On 2000's INVINCIBLE SUMMER, the Canadian songbird looks to a quote from Camus for the title and then loosens the reins considerably, putting together a collection of dreamy, Burt Bacharach-flavored songs reflective of her relocation from the Canadian hinterlands to sunny Southern California.
Teaming with William Orbit protege Damian leGassick, Lang conjures up 11 tracks soaked in an aura of ambiance. Among the elements lacing these songs are hints of bossa nova ("Suddenly"), quirky pop goosed along by Eurodisco string arrangements ("It's Happening with You") and a swirling mix of Lang's sultry vocals in a homage to Roy Orbison ("Love's Great Ocean"). Throughout all of SUMMER, the thread that ties all these songs together is love, ranging from how uncomplicated it can be (the sparsely arranged "Simple") to the yearning felt for a secret love (the lush "When We Collide"). Best of all is "What Better Said," a sinewy song awash in electronic beeps and beats that finds Lang waiting for a reciprocated declaration of love.
