On her 2008 debut, alternative-pop artist Lenka Kripac steps out from her role in the Australian ensemble Decoder Ring to unveil a highly melodic and playful solo album. Backed by a small army of session musicians, Lenka comes across as a perky, radio-friendly version of peers such as Regina Spektor and Sia, as best revealed on the gleeful "Skipalong" and the vibrant "Dangerous and Sweet."

Lenka album
$10.15 Mates of State are the husband-wife duo of Kori Gardner on keys of various types and Jason Hammel on drums and occasional keys as well. They both sing with innocent gusto, and their charming voices remind one of wonderful indie pop bands like Papas Fritas and Butterglory in the way they intertwine and twist with naïve fervor. They sound like real people singing about real things, and that is kind of exciting. And they don't use guitars of any kind. And you don't miss them either! Team Boo is the band's fullest sounding, most energy-filled record yet. The duo called in Jim Eno of Spoon and John Croslin, who has worked with Spoon also as well as Beulah and the Mates on their first disc, to produce. Together they have concocted a record that leaps out of the speakers with a feeling of manic joy and excitement. Songs like "Fluke," "Ha Ha," and "Gotta Get a Problem" dance with the energy of kids and reel with the flush of first love. Every now and then the record slows down the pace and deals with heavier issues like on the stately "Parachutes (Funeral Song)" or "An Experiment," but even these songs are blessed with killer hooks and Gardner's and Hammel's angelic vocals. Team Boo is a record that will make even the staunchest nonbelievers believe in the power of simply played, ...
| | Emmylou Harris Stumble Into Grace CD (2003)
Lenka CD music
$12.39 STUMBLE INTO GRACE was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album.
Over three decades into a highly successful career as an interpreter of other writers' material, Emmylou Harris beats the odds by releasing her second consecutive album of original compositions. She's had plenty of time to learn from the best, and the lessons gained from digging into the work of writers like Gram Parsons, Leonard Cohen, and Townes Van Zandt can be felt here, even if she can't be expected to equal their mastery. She works again with members of the Spyboy band that helped reinvent Harris's sound on WRECKING BALL, but as on RED DIRT GIRL, the churning, rhythmic feel of the former is underplayed in favor of a gentler, more folkish approach.
Years ago, few could have guessed that one of Harris's most valuable songwriting partners would be a former member of NYC funk-rockers Luscious Jackson, but Jill Cunniff ...

Lenka album
$12.55 They have NIN’s mastery of technology and Sepultura’s politics, brought from the third world to ours with a pronounced spiritual twist. This four-piece Industrial Metal band from Chicago was formed in 1993 by producer/engineer, drummer, and keyboardist Brian Eaton. North uses technology to the hilt, giving the band its industrial strength rock sound, but there’s more hiding below the surface. North’s vocalist Don Grillo manipulates his voice in unearthly ways, scowling ...

$35.59 When these kings of '80s pop metal were making their initial splash on the charts, it would have been hard to predict that the 21st century would find them still intact, much less growing and prospering. Against all odds, weathering virtually every kind of disaster that can befall a rock band, Def Leppard has indeed survived. While many of their contemporaries find themselves churning out the same old sound on the oldies revival circuit, Def Leppard has pulled a Bon Jovi and changed with the times, managing to sound completely contemporary without seeming like sellouts.
The panoramic power balladry of "Unbelievable" for example, could easily be a latter-day Aerosmith hit, while its not hard to imagine a post-grunge act like Dishwalla storming the charts with a song like album-opener "Now." That said, there's still plenty of the old Def Leppard magic here for longtime fans; those patented hooks, harmonies and churning guitar riffs that endeared the band to millions are very much present on X, they're just surrounded by some agreeably updated adornments.
No matter how hard Def Leppard pushed 1999's Euphoria, it just didn't take off. No matter how many times they were on VH1 in the years separating that album and its successor, 2002's X, the group failed to stay in the popular consciousness as an active band -- after all, a much-repeated Behind the Music and a made-for-TV biopic aren't the best way to signal that a band is still vital. X isn't likely to change that reputation, either, since much of it sounds like the band is desperate for a hit again. To their credit, they're not chasing the new, hip sound -- no stabs at nu-metal or rap-rock here -- but they've decided to act their age. Unfortunately, that pretty much means they've left rock behind, turning out a bunch of even-handed adult-pop that is melodic without being tuneful, or even memorable, for that matter. Even when the tempo is turned up a bit, there isn't much kick to their rhythms; never before has a song called "Four Letter Word" sounded so clean. There are some exceptions, though, where Def Leppard still shows signs of being a great band -- there's a chorus or a bridge here and there with spark: "You're So Beautiful" and "Everyday" ...
