| | Pimp C Greatest Hits CD Pimp C Discography of CDs
Released just six months after the H-Town icon's tragic death, Pimp C's GREATEST HITS focuses primarily on the UGK member's two solo albums, THE SWEET JAMES JONES STORIES and PIMPALATION. While much of Pimp's work as part of UGK is not included, this Rap-A-Lot collection features some of his most memorable collaborations with fellow Dirty South artists such as Lil Keke, Juvenile, Z-Ro Mike Jones, 8Ball & MJG, and, of course, Bun B.
Before his tragic death in December 2007, Pimp C left an indelible mark on hip-hop as a Dirty South pioneer and one half of the iconic H-Town duo UGK. Focusing on Pimp's two solo albums (THE SWEET JAMES STORIES and PIMPALATION), Rap-A-Lot Records showcases some of the Houston lyricist's most memorable collaborations on this Chopped N Screwed compilation. Lil Keke, Z-Ro, Juvenile, 8Ball & MJG, Mike Jones, and Bun B are also featured.
With only two official solo albums -- Sweet James Jones Stories and Pimpalation -- in the can before the rapper passed away, Rap-A-Lot didn't have much to choose from when they compiled Pimp C's catalog. Their 2008 collection features no "R.I.P." dedication but it does display the usual Rap-A-Lot subpar packaging with the expected mistakes (for example, the Tom Petty-sampling single "I'm Free" is listed as just "Free"). Besides that, eight of these 24 tracks are either skits or interludes so you have to shave off some points, seeing as how "Greatest Hits" is on the cover. Still, the highlights are all here in one compact package and the pacing of the collection is near-perfect. Messages from the Pimp's mother plus his UGK partner Bun B lead into the now supremely poignant "I Miss You" for a heartbreaking finish. Whether or not that's enough for longtime fans to repurchase these tracks is up to them and their wallets, while newcomers thinking they might eventually want more should be warned that they'll encounter the same redundancy problem starting here and working their way backwards. | | Bun B II Trill: Chopped-Up Not Slopped-Up CD (2008) Chop
Greatest Hits CD music
$13.69 Three years after his definitive solo debut, Bun B reminds listeners why he's among the strongest lyricists out of the South. Aside from a guestlist longer than Manute Bol, II TRILL benefits from impeccable production work throughout (courtesy of Clinton Sparks, JR Rotem, DJ Khalil, and the Blackout Movement, among others), as well as Bun's precise flow, commanding vocal presence, and straight-up skills. Super Producer Chops puts together one of the smoothest, down south funk tracks of all time for the monumental collaboration between Bun and Lil Wayne on "Damn, I'm Cold." Bun pays homage to his deceased partner Pimp C throughout II TRILL and reserves the heartfelt track "Angel in the Sky" as a personal eulogy. Z-Ro, J Prince, Sean Kingston, Lyfe Jennings, Junior ...

| | Mariah Carey Merry Christmas CD (1994)
Greatest Hits songs
$8.75 At this stage of her career Mariah Carey does not need to prove herself, but her voice is so powerful that with each new recording she, once again, reminds you: "Listen to what I can do." Vocal gymnastics and Christmas songs are not often thought of as a compatible combination, but on MERRY CHRISTMAS Mariah jumps, climbs, crawls, twirls and dashes her way through both traditional fare and original Christmas songs.
She shifts through styles, offering fans from all musical camps a gift of their own. Her "Silent Night" shows off a studied vocalization where liquid phrasing is key. "Miss You Most (At Christmas Time)" shows off a dynamic voice that is hard to match. She has fun ...

| | Rihanna Rated R CD (2009)
Greatest Hits CD music
$14.64 "Russian Roulette," released weeks prior to Rated R, just hinted at Rihanna's sudden desire to provoke. Even with the realization that it is metaphorical, the song startles with its hesitant gasps, spinning cylinders, and verses that are glacially paced, where a cold piano line and the slight inflections in Rihanna's voice are front and center. And then there's an audible shudder followed by a discharged bullet -- the abrupt end to one of Rated R's most restrained moments. It's not the only instance where Rihanna's rise in fame, combined with being the victim in the decade's highest-profile felonious assault, added up to a perfect-storm scenario for a creative overhaul. Rated R is more like Good Girl Gone Evil, or Abused Girl Full of Vengeful Rage, not Good Girl Gone Bad, where the only casualties were some dishes. The closest the set gets to upbeat pop is "Rude Boy," and by any standard it ...

| | Ann Peebles Part Time Love CD (1971) Reissue; Digipak
Greatest Hits CD music
$11.39 For reasons seemingly lost to history, Ann Peebles' second album, Part Time Love, featured four songs that were lifted from her debut LP, This Is Ann Peebles, which came and went with little notice less than a year earlier. Despite the recycling of "It's Your Thing," "Crazy About You Baby," "Give Me Some Credit," and "Solid Foundation," Part Time Love does have a different overall feel that sets it apart from Peebles' first set. Peebles hardly seemed like a beginner on This Is Ann Peebles, but she's even more confident on Part Time Love's new material, with a tougher and more soulful edge announcing itself on "I'll Get Along" and the title cut, and while the Hi Records house band are as tight as ever here, the newer songs have a funkier energy that suggests how much was changing in R&B as the 1960s gave way to the '70s. Part Time Love also isn't filled with a number of instantly recognizable covers like the debut, forcing fans to make a mental comparison between Peebles and the likes of ...
