Audio Mixers: Manny Marroquin; Peter Mockran; Peter Mokran; Rob Chiarelli. Recording information: Fever Recording, North Hollywood, CA. R&B-influenced gospel duo Mary Mary return with the tremendous THE SOUND, a rollicking modern pop record that sounds in spots (especially on the excellent title track) like what would happen if Amy Winehouse found the gospel spirit. The songs are uniformly catchy and inventively produced and arranged, making THE SOUND a record likely to appeal to a secular audience as well. Once again, it's the instantly memorable, upbeat, radio-ready material that places Mary Mary at the forefront of contemporary gospel. When The Sound was released, the energizing "Get Up" was threatening to make as much of a crossover splash as 2000s "Shackles (Praise You)," and like four other songs front-loaded on Erica and Tina's fifth album -- including the triumphant David Banner feature "Superfriend," the booming/bumping "God in Me," and the rambunctious '60s throwback title track ("Is it all right if I moan?!/Mmmmoooaaannn-nuh!") -- there's more walloping vigor than what can be found in nearly any given modern, platinum-seeking R&B album. The disc's latter half is relatively indistinct, but it could never be said that the duo is going through the motions. The same goes for Erica's husband, undervalued veteran producer/songwriter Warryn Campbell. ~ Andy Kellman Sound Music Review Average Rating: (4.6 out of 5 stars) excellent praise album I have listned to this album from start to finish several times and I love the album. Versatility of Mary Mary We love this album. What I really like is how you get the Mary Mary "sound" on each track, yet the tracks are still independent of each other. You have a 60s sounding "Sound", movie soundtrack sounding, "Superfriend", club sounding, "Get Up", etc. Awesome work!! Submitted by James (Wilmington, DE, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Amazing! I have never heard such a phenominal GOSPEL (r&b/soul/hip-hop) album. You girls amaze me every time. This is for the young and old at heart. I promise this one is worth every penny plus a few more. Submitted by Letoyajohnson (Atlanta, GA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Sound
$7.59 When Lisa Stansfield took the R&B world by storm with her melancholy, Barry White-influenced single "All Around the World," it was obvious that not since Teena Marie had a white female singer performed R&B so convincingly. Though she didn't shy away from hip-hop and house-music elements, Affection leaves no doubt where the British singer's heart lies -- sleek yet gritty '70s R&B. Though the retro leanings of such updated soul treasures as "You Can't Deny It" and "What Did I Do to You" are obvious, Stansfield's producer keeps things very fresh sounding by embracing a decidedly high-tech and very late-'80s/early-'90s production style. Though essentially a soul diva, Stansfield has a disco masterpiece in the love-and-togetherness anthem "This Is the Right Time." ~ Alex Henderson AFFECTION is a hit-packed album from one of the pioneering club divas of the early '90s. Lisa Stansfield's "All Around the World" was one of the biggest songs of the era, and became a ...

| | Jack DeJohnette New Directions In Europe CD (1979)
Sound
$15.55 Personnel: Jack DeJohnette (piano, drums); Lester Bowie (trumpet); John Abercrombie (guitar, mandolin); Eddie Gomez (bass). Recorded live in Willisau, Switzerland in June 1979. Drummer Jack DeJohnette's New Directions tended to promise much more than it delivered. The quartet (comprised of the leader on drums and piano, trumpeter Lester Bowie, guitarist John Abercrombie and bassist Eddie Gomez) was certainly full of talent, even if their performances often rambled before finding purpose. This live set has four lengthy pieces, three of which are DeJohnette originals (including "Where or Wayne") and a free improvisation by the band. | | Audra Going To The Theatre CD (2002)
Sound
$13.65 Audra includes: Bret Helm, Bart Helm. Recorded between April 20, 2001 and January 1, 2001. Recording information: Mesa, AZ (04/20/2001-01/01/2002). Photographers: Bret Helm; Sam Rosenthal. Having made a beautifully elegant splash with their self-titled debut, the brothers Helm keep things going with their second Audra album, Going to the Theatre. Helped here and there by second guitarist Robert Stacy but otherwise handling everything themselves, Bret and Bart -- still looking devilishly goth/glam, if the photos are any indication -- again create a series of songs combining knowing artiness, glowering but catchy guitar riffs, and just enough humor. If anything were going to be a soundtrack to a movie about denizens of the darkwave scene in the early 21st century, this would probably have to be it. "Fearless 'Peaches'" alone -- an acoustic-led portrait of a music-loving drag queen -- could make the basis for a better film than most. Bret's singing is again an important and mighty fine element to why it all works, dark and low without sounding overtly doom-laden, yet able to ...
