Considering that even very few dedicated soul collectors knew about the XL and Sounds of Memphis companies at the beginning of the 21st century, a surprising amount of material was retrieved from the vaults prior to and including this 2008 CD reissue. This second various-artists anthology assembled from their holdings (which have also yielded cuts appearing on a couple other CDs) is divided about evenly between previously unreleased material and tracks appearing on obscure singles between the mid-'60s and the mid-'70s. The good news is that Play the Game: The XL and Sounds of Memphis Story, Vol. 2 is at least as consistent and impressive as the first volume. The less impressive news is that for the most part it's pretty average period Southern soul, with few recordings that really make you sit up and take notice, and certainly not as distinct a flavor as the better Memphis discs being cut in the same era at Stax and Hi. Please also visit EveRucker Eve Rucker is a singer, songwriter, actress and playwright, who has written over 80 songs in the genres of R&B, Reggae, Rock, Jazz, Blues and Gospel. Both her parents were gospel singers who met while singing on the same church program. She is the seventh of eight children. Some of Eve's earliest memories in music are singing special parts with 'The Big Kids' singing behind her as they ministered at area churches with her mother playing the piano. At age 8 her mother, Christina, lost her long battle with cancer and the following year her eldest sister died. Eve credits her survival to the fact that even at this tender age, she knew how to pray.Music was Eve's way of escape and, as a child, spent hours mimicking the singers she saw on TV. After graduation, Eve moved from her rural hometown in Western Kentucky to Louisville, Kentucky where, one day on a whim, she decided to submit a few of her original songs to various artists around the country. Clarence Carter of 'Patches' fame was one of the first to reply. A week later, she flew to Atlanta to meet Carter and the staff at his record label, 'Future Stars. ' Three weeks after that fateful meeting, Eve quit her job and with $75. 00 and a dream, relocated to Atlanta, Georgia. Eve has worked with the late Isaac Hayes and The Black Songwriter's Association; the film 'Soul Music in Georgia', performed at New York's famed 'Apollo Theater,' cable television's 'State of the Arts' and two specials for ABC.
