Musical Masterpieces Soundtrack album
$6.09 The title Heavy Metal is somewhat misleading. Sure, this terrific soundtrack from the 1981 animated cult favorite features heavy metal and hard rock numbers. But the title refers to National Lampoon's sci-fi/fantasy magazine on which the film is based. Musically, Heavy Metal offers more than the title suggests, and the songs fit perfectly with their respective film segments. Heavy Metal was originally a double album, but at 62 minutes it fits just fine on one CD. Sixteen songs are contributed by Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, Cheap Trick, Devo, Donald Fagen, Don Felder, Grand Funk Railroad, Sammy Hagar, Journey, Nazareth, Stevie Nicks, Riggs, and Trust; Cheap Trick, Felder, and Riggs each provide two. Most songs are exclusive to this soundtrack. ...

| | Rickie Lee Jones Evening Of My Best Day CD (2003) Digipak
Musical Masterpieces Soundtrack songs
$15.19 This was set to be an important album for Rickie Lee Jones from the get-go. She had released only two albums of original material in the 1990s, with a six-year gap between the last one and EVENING OF MY BEST DAY. Also, this was her first album for V2 after a live album and a covers disc on Artemis. Fans may rest easy in the knowledge that Jones didn't drop the ball at this crucial juncture; in fact, she runs with it and spikes it in the end zone.
This is a solid set of songs with imaginatively affecting arrangements, showcasing Jones's freewheeling style in its best light. The minor-key folkish ballad "Sailor Song" rubs shoulders with the gospel-flavored protest song "Tell Somebody," whose parenthetical title "Repeal the Patriot Act" leaves little room for ambiguity. The chamber-music art song "A Tree on Allenford" shares space with the bluesy stomp of "Mink Coat at the Bus Stop," and the whole thing hangs together in an exceedingly coherent fashion. It makes you think there's something to be said for longevity.

| | Fiona Price Window To The Past CD (2005) (Import)
Musical Masterpieces Soundtrack album
$19.29 'Window to the Past' brings together 11 songs from a range of genres. There are two jazz songs (tracks 2 & 9), two piano ballads (4 & 11), a folk song (8), and a country song (6). The remaining tracks are pop songs which range in style from the dark electronica of 'Anaesthesia' to the light girly 'Wake Me to Say Good-Bye'. It's hard to come up with a mood or genre for the album as a whole, but it could perhaps be called pop of different flavours with dark introspective lyrics. When I began writing these songs, I loved popular music but I didn't have any contact with the people who played it. I had studied the piano for many years, and had friends who were classical musicians, but I didn't know anyone who could have helped me bring the sort of music I wrote to life. No-one heard any of my songs until a small evening concert at the college I was staying, when I was invited to present an item, and decided to perform 'Nightfall', accompanied by a backing singer and acoustic guitar. After getting a very encouraging response from ...
