Puro Tejano Gold album
$13.15 EVIL FARM CHILDREN The name may sound like a B-grade, drive-in horror flick, but…… they are a raw and raunchy trio from Canada’s capital with a growing legion of fans, and reputation for intense stage shows. Their sound is real rock’n’roll, with a roots-rock flavour. The band can easily do a rocking surf instrumental with the fervor of Dick Dale, and, in a heartbeat, shift gears to roll right into a rockin’ rockabilly rave up, or a Stooges influenced, feedback infused, pounding rock’n’roll song. Since forming in the summer of 2005, this trio has been regularly playing many of Ottawa’s live music venues, as well as in Toronto, Montreal, and several cities in Southern Ontario. They were invited to perform at the 2008 Ottawa Blues Festival, one of the most popular music festivals in North America. Their original material, as captured in their recordings (see below) matters most, but for their live shows, the band likes to have fun by whipping out some heavily “Evil-ized” versions of songs by the likes of Dick Dale, Black Sabbath, ...

| | Jeremy Wegner Nevermind The Triangles CD (2009)
Puro Tejano Gold songs
$18.99 Seems to me the title of Jeremy's new CD could just as easily be “nevermind the genres” as tracks drift effortlessly through surprising (and delightful!) changes of mood and style. It's a raga, wait now it's a jig, but now it sounds like a klezmer tune. Oh, and here's the all out country hoedown! Here's a song to meditate upon, and here's one to dance to – this music is never boring. How could it be when “Bengali Misfortune” is followed by “Tofu Up A Tree Stump” and then “Pistachio”? The players are all accomplished accomplices on all sorts of stringed instruments and percussion, each getting their chance to play their hearts out and shine in turn. After all the swirling instrumental thoughtfulness and exuberance, I love ending the journey with Jeremy's voice singing a simple, sincere version of Pete Seeger's “Adam the Inventor.” Thanks for the sweet ride, Jeremy & friends!Jeremy Wegner plays what he calls “Acoustic World Transgenre,” which he matter-of-factly describes as “Middle-Eastern Old-Time Celtic Klezmer Ragass” or “Mediterranean Irish Indian ...
| | Big Rude Jake Quicksand CD (2009) (Import)
Puro Tejano Gold album
$18.29 Legendary singer-songwriter Big Rude Jake is back with a new album and a whole new look on life. Fans of this journeyman performer will remember him as a force to be reckoned with: a noted figure on the Canadian music scene with a presence around the world. An innovator, a deft craftsman of song and a powerful and compelling lyricist, Jake has been knocking audiences dead with his impassioned performances for 20 years. QuicksandBig Rude Jake’s new release, Quicksand, explores contemporary twists on popular music forms from decades ago. Listeners will note a dramatic shift away from the "neo-swing" style that has characterized previous Big Rude Jake recordings in favour of a more general roots-oriented singer/song-writer approach. The over-all sound of Quicksand is relaxed and contemplative. The musical arrangements often involve reduced instrumentation, with some tracks featuring Jake on guitar and vocals alone. With such a mellow touch added to these compelling and eclectic songs, Quicksand marks the end of the Swing Punk persona of yester-year, and the emergence of a new thoughtfulness and maturity that comes to anyone on a long journey back home. Armed with a new band, Jake is strongly focused on presenting the singer-songwriter side of his work over and above the nutty punk-inspired performer side. His new material will surely rekindle this country’s love of this powerful singer/songwriter, just as they were first inspired by his raucous antics a decade ago. Perhaps most importantly, Jake has returned to his roots. Quicksand features all original music, strongly rooted in Traditional Jazz, Gospel, Ragtime, Folk and Blues.Welcome back, Jake. We look forward to seeing much more of you, both inside and out.The BackstoryThe tale of Jake’s rise to infamy has been told and re-told to the point of becoming mythic. The story goes that, some 20 years ago, Jake was drawn to the Jazz tradition for its passion and sensuality and lamented the rise of the stuffy “jazz intellectual.” He dreamed up a plan to bring Jazz back to its street-wise and rough-hewn roots. Part of this process would require him to develop a stage persona that was evocative of strident passion and longing. In the first few years of his career, he actually avoided playing in jazz venues altogether. Instead, he performed his own jazz and swing compositions in rock ...
