THE STAND INS is a sequel to 2007's THE STAGE NAMES, the second half of a double album's worth of songs completed by singer-songwriter Will Sheff prior to the first album's release. The songs continue with the lyrical themes and obsessions of THE STAGE NAMES, filled with references to famous bands, authors, films, TV shows, and other bits of high and low culture set to Sheff's moody, guitar-based indie rock tunes. Even the cover art of the two albums links together to form a single image, although both in artwork and in its compelling songs, THE STAND INS also stands alone as a complete work in itself. THE STAND INS is available as a digital download, a standard CD, and a vinyl LP.

Rolling Stone (p.113) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "'Lost Coastlines trips along on a sprightly Motown groove. 'Starry Stairs' is a Smiths ringer punched up with Stax/Volt horn charts." Spin (p.128) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "THE STAND INS is packed with sprawling narratives and precarious guitars....Sheff makes even the most complicated sentiments feel like an invitation to raise your fist." Spin (p.49) - Ranked #19 in Spin's "40 Best Albums Of 2008" -- "Will Sheff's alternately biting and weary stories of doubt and falsity resonate..." Entertainment Weekly (p.136) - "This Austin quintet follow 2007's THE STAGE NAMES with a second tour de force about the collateral damage of fame." -- Grade: A Alternative Press (p.152) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Paired with electric guitar and Sheff's rich, smooth-yet-almost-breaking vocal delivery, 'Names' is textured and engaging." Magnet (p.118) - "THE STAND INS leaves the door open to its roots, from now-former member Jonathan Meilburg's ringing banjo opening 'Lost Coastlines' to the appropriately HIGHWAY 61-leaning 'Singer Songwriter'..." Blender (Magazine) (p.82) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Lyrically, Sheff straddles the line between precious and brilliant, warbling twisty, appostive-packed tales about life on the road and crumbled relationships over cranked-up, vaguely folkish rock riffs." Stand Ins songs
$10.15 On 2007's BOXER, the National's second full-length album for the venerable Beggars Banquet label, the Brooklyn-based indie-rock act follows up the lauded ALLIGATOR with another round of melancholy guitar-driven tunes. Led by deep-voiced vocalist Matt Berninger, who often sounds hung-over yet disarmingly articulate, the band excels at brooding mid-tempo songs, as exemplified by the world-weary "Fake Empire," which combines political and personal themes, and "Mistaken for Strangers," a track that recalls NYC peers Interpol, thanks in part to the punchy approach of shared producer Peter Katis.

| | Okkervil River Stage Names CD (2007)
Stand Ins album
$11.99 What's gotten into Okkervil River? While the band has always been basically the vehicle for the songs and musings of frontman Will Sheff, their formless approach--somewhere between indie rock, emo, and roots music--has always tended to be a too-middling, too-pensive, and an altogether too-tasteful affair. STAGE NAMES changes everything. With the mixing help of Spoon drummer and Austin producer extraordinaire Jim Eno, the Austin quintet finally unleash their inner rock animals and deliver an unhinged rock-&-roll record replete with finger snaps, swaggering riffs, and Sheff's most direct and dynamic song cycle yet.
The lead-off, "Our Life Is Not A Movie and Maybe," injects a Belle and Sebastian-esque melodic theme with a sweeping rock energy that finally matches Sheff's penchant for dense, literate turns of phrase. "A Girl in Port" and "Plus Ones" masquerade first as old-style Okkervil River ballads before blossoming into wasted, midtempo country rock. "You Can't Take the Hand of a Rock and Roll Man" continues the touring life themes by riding a T. Rexish glam rock riff with lyrics of girls passed out in hotel chairs. Many ...

| | Pavlov's Dog At The Sound Of The Bell CD (1975)
Stand Ins music CDs
$11.65 AT THE SOUND OF THE BELL, the first release from 1970s St. Louis progressive rock outfit Pavlov's Dog delivers nine outstanding tracks including "Gold Nuggets" and "Mersey."
Pavlov's Dog lead singer David Surkamp was everything that was wrong with the band's Columbia debut Pampered Menial. Tempered here by Blue Oyster Cult producers Murray Krugman and Sandy Pearlman, who also recorded the first disc, the sound is more appealing to the ear. The question is, where was it going? Too pop for progressive rock, and too progressive for Top 40, the music is driving and more focused the second time around. There are some heavy guests to add to the festivities, Roxy Music's sax player Andy McKay along with drummer William Bruford and Arista sax player Michael Brecker, though the tracks they appear on are not designated. "Valkerie" has a great hook, of "bring back the good old days," and the production here is cleaner than the first time around, but there is something very left field about this group, extremely non-commercial, even on a pretty ballad like "Standing Here With You (Megan's Song)." The music isn't as artsy as the Mothers of Invention, and certainly not as on target as Blue Oyster Cult, making one wonder if A&R man Mark Spector was just being courteous to producers Krugman and Pearlman? Mark Spector had produced Bob Segarini's 1975 effort with Dudes on Columbia, and went on to manage 38 Special, his pop leanings make this signing all the more mysterious. That being said, this outing is actually more pop oriented, or at least as poppy as this style and singer may want to be. "Try to Hang On" is light and listener friendly, one of the best tracks on the album; it is followed by "Gold Nuggets" which is almost a continuation of "Try to Hang On." "She Breaks Like Morning Sky" interrupts the flow a bit, driving a little harder, but the performance is still light years beyond the previous album. The producers have brought ...
