Replacing the band's volume in A&M's Classics series, Greatest Hits collects all Styx's major chart and radio hits, from "Lady" to "Show Me the Way." Although they were a definitive album-oriented rock band, creating records that were meant to be listened to as a whole, their finest moments were always their singles, making Greatest Hits the only Styx disc many fans will need to own. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Between the early 1970s and early '80s, Kansas made a long musical journey, starting out as complex prog-rock merchants, deeply indebted to the technically dazzling, epic works of Yes, Genesis, and Emerson, Lake & Palmer. A decade on, the band had trimmed its sound to the bare bones, pounding out relatively straightforward, hard-edged AOR. THE BEST OF KANSAS ably illustrates how Kansas got from one extreme to the other. "The Wall" and "Closet Chronicles," for instance, illustrate the proggier side of the group, unafraid to experiment. The ideal middle ground occupied by the churning rocker "Carry On Wayward Son" and the peppy, melodic "Point of Know Return" represents the commercial and artistic apex of the band. The relentless, pile-driver attack of the early-'80s hit "Fight Fire with Fire" finds the former art-rockers closer in spirit to Def Leppard than to King Crimson. You couldn't ask for more variety or a more comprehensive selection from a single-disc collection than what's provided by THE BEST OF KANSAS.
Although it isn't perfect, The Best of Kansas is a solid 12-track collection that contains the bulk of the prog rock group's greatest hits, including "Carry On Wayward Son," "Point of Know Return," "Dust in the Wind," "Hold On," "Play the Game Tonight," and "Fight Fire With Fire." THE GRAND ILLUSION was the album that rocketed Styx to superstardom after all their years of hard work. That time spent in the trenches was clearly not wasted, as the group displays an unprecedented level of tightness here in their writing, arrangements, and performance. This is something of a concept album, the theme being the hypocrisy and self-deception inherent in modern American society. The songs that tackle this concept most directly are James Young's bristling rocker "Miss America," Dennis DeYoung's appropriately grandiose-sounding title tune, and "Superstars," Tommy Shaw's evisceration of the rock star life.
Some of the most effective songs here are Shaw's inspirational "Fooling Yourself," the more obscure, moody tunes "Castle Walls" and "Man in the Wilderness," and DeYoung's epic tale of interstellar experiences "Come Sail Away," which would become one of the most loved songs in the band's catalog. Detroit has produced more than its share of great music: from jazz stars like Hank, Thad & Elvin Jones; to the Motown stable of vocal artists, and legendary rhythm players Benny Benjamin and James Jamerson. Not to mention a whole lot of hard funk and primal metal, everyone from Funkadelic and Ted Nugent, to Iggy & The Stooges and the MC5--hard driving, rugged rock and roll. Put it all together with a touch of pop, and a lot of soul, and you've got Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band.
It's easy to divine Seger's influence on the music of Bruce Springsteen, and draw parallels with the vocal style of Van Morrison. The epic themes of Seger's characters on "Night Moves" certainly parallel those of the folk heroes who populate Springsteen songs (though he began developing his menagerie a good decade before the Boss). The chant-like, testifying cadences of Seger's blowtorch voice, and his predilection for gospelish motifs, puts one in mind of the mighty Celt's visionary flights.
And as the fine GREATEST HITS makes clear, Bob Seger's influence on contemporary roots music is enormous. A song such as "Like A Rock" practically defines a roots approach to power pop, while "Old Time Rock & Roll" finds Seger in an upbeat, Little Richard mode. Celebrations notwithstanding, "Still The Same" and "Turn The Page" are dark, unstinting unsentimental looks at the underbelly of the showbiz animal and the road.
