Mel Brooks' 1974 spoof on Mary Shelley's classic horror novel debuts on high-definition. Bonuses: picture-in-picture, featurettes, trivia, deleted/extended scenes, game, isolated score track, commentary, outtakes. An affectionate parody that pays homage to the FRANKENSTEIN films (from the novel FRANKENSTEIN by Mary Shelley) directed by James Whale in the 1930s, YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN is both a zany comedy and a cinematic tour de force. Written by director Mel Brooks and the film's star, Gene Wilder, YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN has all the usual--and in this case slightly unusual--suspects: the reluctant scientist Frederick Frankenstein, who is actually the grandson of the infamous creature-creator (pronounced "Fronken-steen" and played by Wilder), his spoiled fiancée (Madeline Kahn), Igor the pop-eyed hunchback (Marty Feldman), his dizzy assistant (Teri Garr), the castle's hideous head housekeeper (Cloris Leachman), and, of course, the Monster (Peter Boyle). Highlights include the sets, which are the original ones used in the Whale films; the beautiful black-and-white cinematography; and the fine screenplay. Combining noirish elegance with uproarious sight gags and double entendres is a feat Brooks pulls off fabulously, directing the wonderful ensemble to act with sensitivity and humanistic feelings as well as with lunatic abandon. YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN is a treat from beginning to end. Theatrical Release: December 15, 1974.
YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN is number 13 on the American Film Institute's list of America's 100 Funniest Movies.
The film employs much of the original laboratory equipment used in the original FRANKENSTEIN, designed by Kenneth Strickfaden, who had the stuff set up in his basement and lent Brooks the set, creating some new pieces to go with the old.
The film was shot at a 1:85 frame ratio, as were the old FRANKENSTEIN films, and this helped to create the movie's classic look, as did the use of iris outs, spins, and wipes.
Gene Wilder came up with the original concept for the film while starring in Brooks's BLAZING SADDLES and approached him with the idea.
Said Wilder of working on the script with Brooks, "I would say, 'I don't want this to be BLAZING FRANKENSTEIN,' and he'd answer, 'I don't want an art film that only 14 people see.'"
Kenneth Mars, who played the crazy Nazi playwright in Brooks's THE PRODUCERS, created a parody of Lionel Atwill in SON OF FRANKENSTEIN in his characterization of Inspector Kemp in YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN. Young Frankenstein Quotes/Excerpts: "Can I get you some-sing, Doctor, some varm meelk, perhaps?"--Frau Blucher
"Nothing, no. I'm fine."--Frankenstein (Gene Wilder)
"Nosing at all?"--Frau Blucher
"No, NOTHING."--Frankenstein
"Ovalteeeen?"--Frau Blucher
"NO!"--Frankenstein
"What knockers!"--Frederick as he simultaneously looks at the doors to the castle and helps Inga (Teri Garr) down from the horse-drawn cart
"Sank you, Doctor!" she fetchingly replies

Adult comedy at its best. Funny spoof on a classic. Great comedy stars bring a horror classic to those of us who 'don't do horror movies'. Gene Wilder plays the lead and Marty Feldman as his side-kick Igor bring the monster to life. The 'monster', played by Peter Boyle, is given a true human quality in the fear of fire (who doesn't have a fear of something?). The community fears him and then rallies around him to give him a chance when they finally understand him. A lesson we could all learn about acceptance. A true classic in its own right. Solid and Superb One of Mel Brooks' very best because he stayed on the subject-matter. Lots of satire and in-jokes,especially familiar to those who know the old Frankenstein movies. All the stars are absolutely outstanding and it's impossible to give any particular one lots of huzzahs! And wait'll you see who plays the Blind Man!
One of those few comedies where you'll burst out laughing in your own living room.

$21.89 Veronica Sawyer (Winona Ryder) has sacrificed everything in order to preserve her place in Westerburg High's most impenetrable social clique, the HEATHERS. As the only member of the group not named "Heather," Veronica has to work extra hard just to stay afloat. Going against her own morals and intelligence, Veronica succumbs to peer pressure on a daily basis, faking her delight in the humiliation of the school's less popular students. Bored of the frat parties and cow tipping so popular among her friends, Veronica's curiosity is peaked when a mysterious new guy named JD comes to town. The dark, brooding JD (Christian Slater at his best) observes Veronica among her pack in the lunchroom (where social hierarchy is most clearly displayed), concluding that Veronica is not a Heather at heart. When Veronica confides in JD that she hates her friends and wishes Heather #1 was dead, she never expects her words will have such dire consequences. Before she knows what's happening, JD is dragging Veronica on a killing spree staged as a teen suicide outbreak. But as Veronica soon learns, even death cannot stop the Heathers. Hank (Steve Zahn) is a straightlaced L.A.P.D. officer who is fired after supposedly brutalizing an innocent black man. It turns out the "victim," Earl Montgomery (Lawrence), is actually just an angry citizen who is allergic to bee stings. Frustrated after being dismissed from the L.A.P.D. academy due to his bad temper, Earl seizes the opportunity to take out his rage on the hapless Hank. But six months later, when Hank is released from prison, he is determined to avenge the death of his partner. Their paths cross once again when Nash (Eric Roberts), the man who pulled the trigger, robs the warehouse where Earl is employed as a security guard.
