Black & White; Standard Screen; Additional Footage; Soundtrack English; English Subtitles; Director's Comments; Behind The Scenes South America at the close of World War II provides a steamy microcosm of the European conflict for this tense story of love, deception, and betrayal. The daughter (Ingrid Bergman) of an infamous German spy might be the perfect agent to infiltrate a secretive band of Nazi emigres, but does her past guarantee her commitment or compromise her loyalty? Romantic tension grows between Bergman and the American agent played by Cary Grant, but he cannot overcome his suspicion of her. With her choice to marry the group's evil ringleader, Claude Rains, Bergman may alienate Grant completely just at the time when she needs him the most. NOTORIOUS is Alfred Hitchcock's classic romantic espionage thriller, with passionate, brilliant performances by Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman, featuring one of the most famous screen kisses in film history. At the end of World War II, American military intelligence drafts the alluring daughter (Bergman) of a convicted Nazi to infiltrate a band of nefarious Germans who have fled to Brazil. She is teamed with a dashing but chilly agent (Cary Grant) with whom she falls deeply in love. Because of her past, however, the rigid and judgmental agent refuses to trust her--and their relationship falls completely apart when she agrees to marry the ringleader of the Germans (Claude Rains) in order to have better access to information. The marriage touches off an intricate downward spiral of deceit and betrayal, leaving Bergman trapped in the home of an enemy. If her husband ever discovers the truth about her mission, her life will be in mortal danger. Punchy dialog animates this action-driven thriller that maintains its suspenseful drama to the very end.
Released theatrically in New York City on August 15, 1946.
Hitchock cameo: In one of his most exciting cameos, Hitchcock appears as a guest at a party, taking a drink off a tray, heightening what was already a very tense, dramatic scene.
The FBI had Alfred Hitchcock under surveillance for a period of time because of his interest in the atom bomb.
The film cost $2 million to make and grossed $8 million.
The crane shot at the party, which comes swooping across the stairs, was one of the longest and most challenging shots in Hollywood history at that time.
Special ramps were built on the set that would "lift" Claude Rains, who was much shorter than Ingrid Bergman.

$10.05 This World War II comedy stars Cary Grant in an uncharacteristic turn as Walter Eckland. Walter is an unshaven bum who inhabits a deserted island in the South Seas. Completely boozed up, unshaven, and badly dressed, Walter is a watcher for Japanese spy planes. An Australian Navy Commander, Frank Houghton (Trevor Howard) has pressed Walter, who once had his own cruiser at the beginning of the war, to become the sole occupant of a strategic watching station. It is into this world that smart and sexy Catherine Frenau (Leslie Caron) is drawn when Walter, en route in a dinghy to rescue another watcher, stumbles on to the schoolteacher and a flock of seven young girls. The girls have been marooned because their pilot was ordered to leave them to rescue the survivors of an abandoned bomber. Ralph Nelson directs shrewdly and keeps the comedy crisp as these eight survivors try to inhabit the same small island without driving each other crazy. The sharp witted Academy Award winning screenplay by Peter Stone and Frank Tarloff, is based on a story by S.H. Barnett.

Notorious film
$9.29 The boozing, smoking, cussing captain of a tramp steamer, Charlie Allnut, saves prim and proper Rose Sayer after her brother is killed by German soldiers at the beginning of World War I in Africa. Many quarrels later, the two set sail on the Ulonga-Bora in order to sabotage a German ship. Based on the 1935 novel by C.S. Forester, the wonderful combination of Hepburn and Bogie (who won an Oscar) makes this a thoroughly enjoyable blend of comedy and adventure. Later came the book (and Clint Eastwood film) White Hunter, Black Heart, which chronicled Peter Viertel's experiences observing Huston throughout the making of the picture.
NTSC/Region 0. Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn star in one of the greatest motion pictures of all-time, The African Queen directed by John Huston. Bogart won an Academy Award for his portrayal of Charlie Allnut, a hard drinking river trader who offers to take Rose (Hepburn), the sister of a murdered missionary, from the remains of her destroyed village back to civilization. They encounter an adventure together that leads to romance. The African Queen was nominated for five Oscars in 1951 (Bogart was the only winner) and won for Best Film at the British Academy Awards. It has also been called one of the greatest films of all time by critics throughout the decades. For over half a century, this film still deserves every accolade that has ever been thrown at it.
