Black & White; Standard Screen; Additional Footage; Soundtrack English; English Subtitles; Director's Comments; Sensor Matic REBECCA is Alfred Hitchcock's gothic romance about an innocent and sweet young woman who marries a wealthy gentleman and soon begins to fear that she cannot erase the memories of his first wife, Rebecca. Goaded on by a malevolent housekeeper, the woman attempts to re-create Rebecca's every move, with disastrous results. But gradually the truth about the mysterious Rebecca emerges--a truth that will forever change the woman's perspective on life and love. Based on the 1938 novel by Daphne Du Maurier, the film marked Hitchcock's American debut. A string of classic suspense films produced in England had earned Alfred Hitchcock a reputation in the United States, and his first American production, REBECCA, cemented his fame. Based on the novel by Daphne du Maurier, REBECCA was conceived to rival producer David O. Selznick's previous epic, GONE WITH THE WIND. This psychological thriller, however, derives its grandeur from Hitchcock's careful cultivation of the title character's haunting legacy. Joan Fontaine takes the starring role and narrates the story of her life as the second Madam de Winter. Fontaine, young and innocent, meets the worldly and sophisticated Maxim de Winter (Laurence Olivier) while vacationing on the Riviera. After a whirlwind romance and marriage, the two return to his opulent English estate, Maderley, where Fontaine begins to realize she is not entirely welcome in her new role. Chief among her detractors is housekeeper Mrs. Danvers (Judith Anderson), who points out her every failing in relation to the previous mistress of the house, Rebecca. Fontaine is nearly driven to suicide by her inability to understand the mysterious legacy of the first wife. However, when a ship washes ashore, the mystery begins to unravel, setting the stage for the memorable and fiery climax. Hitchcock cameo: Hitchcock stands outside a phone booth watching Jack Favell (George Sanders).
Hitchcock vetoed David Niven for the role of Max de Winter.
Hitchcock had the opportunity to buy the rights for REBECCA while shooting THE LADY VANISHES but thought the price was too high at the time.
Hitchcock used miniatures for scenes of the mansion and the road leading to the house.

Superb directing by Hitchcock and acting by Fontaine! I never tire of this excellent example of Hitchcock's dramatic directing. Every shot is a creative masterpiece. Joan Fontaine's awkward, fearful, & unnamed character develops into a mature, beautiful woman as she eventually learns the truth about her husband's mysterious past with Rebecca, his deceased wife. Joan's acting craft as the new Mrs. DeWinter is fantastic during the entire film, but I especially recall the scene where she joyfully descends the stairs in a beautiful gown to please her Maxim, only to be rebuffed by an angry outburst caused by his disturbing memories. As her face falls, Hitchcock subtly moves the camera down to reflect her painful emotion. Every nuance of Joan's thoughts is revealed on her face throughout the film. Judith Anderson successfully portrays the hauntingly bitter servant of the Manderly mansion and defender of the late Mrs. DeWinter. Submitted by a reviewer (Kewanna, IN) Was This Review Helpful? A Vintage Must! This is one of my all time favorites. A must whenever it's on tv. From Oliviers smoothness and private self torture to Fontaines understated beauty and frustration to the maid, Mrs. Danvers, played by Judith Anderson with sheer absolute obsession, this is one movie that has had so much influence on those that have come after in this genre (see a particularly funny episode of the Carol Burnett show for their homage). From the beginning (a bright happy vacation setting that slowly and prophetically changes to a mire of dark and deceit)Rebeccas journey of self doubt and ultimate redemption grabs you and keeps you glued. OK, so now that I've told you my "snobby" review.....
It's better than most if not all of the more modern mysteries around today. Twists, turns, a wicked obsessed maid, a romance, a ghost, locked rooms, a masquerade ball, it has everything you need for a good viewing of a vintage black and white film. Not one of those short, quicky films, a great sit down and enjoy it film. Karen Submitted by vachonesque1 (Roebling, NJ, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.

$13.55 A liberal white couple (Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy, in Tracy's last appearance) put their platitudes to the test. They always taught their daughter (Katharine Houghton, Hepburn's niece) that all people are created equal, regardless of race or religion... until she unexpectedly brings home a black doctor (Poitier) and announces that they're engaged. Rebecca DVD
$10.19 The grisly and debauched film PATHOLOGY is a juiced-up medical thriller that plays like FLATLINERS with a mean streak and a broken moral compass. Writers Mark Nelvedine and Brian Taylor have created a premise allowing for CSI-like forensics along with heaps of sex and violence, truly making the most of the film's R-rating. A high-end exploitation film with good performances, PATHOLOGY is strong enough for horror fans and should go down smoothly for non-squeamish viewers with a taste for the dark side.
Gifted med student Ted Grey (Milo Ventimiglia, HEROES) arrives at a major Washington, D.C., as an intern, where he is met with suspicion and resentment by the tightly knit group of fellow young pathologists-in-training. Soon, though, Ted is accepted into their circle---where they each take turns committing a murder so that the others may prove their mettle by figuring out the cause of death and celebrate with drug-fueled orgies among the dead bodies in the hospital. Things change for Ted, though, when his law student fiancée, Gwen (Alyssa Milano), moves to the city and helps to scare him straight. Soon, crazed Wallace Stevens-quoting leader Jake Gallo (Michael Weston) turns on Ted, putting both Ted's and Gwen's lives in serious jeopardy. The film opens with the Hippocratic Oath, and it's easy to tell that PATHOLOGY is going to show us doctors behaving badly, and the film is in fact almost gleefully immoral, with an attractive young cast that engages in almost any kind of forbidden behavior one can imagine. Showing that he isn't afraid to take on risky roles, Ventimiglia may surprise his young fans. Director Marc Schoelermann's taste for realism extends to several convincing corpses dissected in close-up, and could prove too much for some viewers, but for others this is the kind of film for which unrated releases were invented.

$13.55 Marcel Langenegger makes his feature-film directorial debut with the aptly titled DECEPTION, a film about secrets and lies. Jonathan McQuarry (Ewan McGregor) feels that life is passing him by. He completes short-term audits for a large firm, but doesn't really feel any connection to his employer and finds it difficult to make friends at his assignments since he's never there for long. Jonathan's circumstances change overnight when charming lawyer Wyatt Bose (Hugh Jackman) befriends him. In an instant, the shy accountant is playing doubles tennis with his new friend and beautiful women and visiting upscale clubs. Just as mild-mannered Jonathan is getting used to his new lifestyle, Wyatt leaves town on business. When Jonathan finds himself mistakenly in possession of Wyatt's cell phone, he also discovers a whole new world of anonymous sex in elite Manhattan hotels with powerful women known simply as "The List." But soon Jonathan is in over his head: he's the prime suspect when a woman goes missing, and the threat of extortion looms.
This tale weaves an intricate web of lies and treachery. Jackman is both charming and chilling as Wyatt, a man utterly without conscience, while McGregor falls easily into character as the bespectacled Everyman, Jonathan. Nerdy but likable, Jonathan really just wants to connect with someone. Along the way, he learns that he is capable of more than he ever expected. Michelle Williams stars as Jonathan's love interest, looking far more glamorous than she did in BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN. Lisa Gay Hamilton, Maggie Q, Natasha Henstridge, and Charlotte Rampling also make brief appearances in the film, which is set primarily in New York City with a side trip to Madrid.
