(4 Customer Reviews)
James Taylor has never been afraid of covers--some of his biggest hits include relaxed versions of the soul classics "How Sweet It Is" and "Handy Man," as well as his sensitive acoustic take on Carole King's "You've Got A Friend"--but COVERS is his first album consisting entirely of other people's songs. Recorded live-to-tape with his 11-piece touring band, these 12 songs range from playful takes on early rock and R&B classics like Buddy Holly's "Not Fade Away" and the Drifters' "On Broadway" to graceful versions of songs by contemporaries like Jimmy Webb ("Wichita Lineman") and Leonard Cohen ("Suzanne"). It's a fresh, relaxed, and endearing take on the often-tired covers album concept.

James Taylor Covers Songs Covers Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) James Taylor is still So Sweet I love the creative talent of James Taylor. He has always had that elusive ability to write songs and perform songs with style and integrity that no one else can equal. With this compilation of covers he has done it again! I'm a country music fan. Especially old style country and the arrangements on "Why Baby Why" and "Seminole Wind" are great! I loved the syncopation for "Summertime Blues". I'm a good ole boy from Lubbock, Texas and I think if Buddy Holly could have heard James' version of his song, "Not Fade Away" he would have cheered loudly. This cd is a must have for any and every James Taylor fan! Submitted by Truett, adart (Pueblo, CO) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Very good... but too friggin' short! This is a very good CD. James is at his best on remakes of Motown songs. Had his version of "It's Growing" been issued in the late 70's to early 80's at his commercial peak, it would have been a major hit. He also sounds splendid on "Witchita Lineman" and George Jones' "Why Baby Why." "Sadie," a minor hit for the Spinners, is also a knockout and could have been a Taylor hit. Less spectaculor are James' versions of "Hound Dog," which sounds nothing like the song most of us are familiar with, and "On Broadway," a song that has just been covered too many times. Even with these shortcoming, the CD is excellent as whole. The major issue for me is that it is a short CD and ends too quickly. Surely James could have included 3 or 4 more selections to this covers set and made it more worth the money. Submitted by mistercarter2u (Richmond, VA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
JT Almost Does It I have bootleg recordings of Roadrunner, Some Days You Gotta Dance, and Summertime Blues that completely shame his tame studio versions, but Wichita Lineman more than makes up for it, worth the price of admission alone!!! | | Gram Parsons Complete Reprise Sessions CDs (2006) Remastered; Boxed Set
Covers CD music
$24.29 Taking the place of the obligatory cd two-fer of GP and GREVIOUS ANGEL, Gram Parsons's THE COMPLETE REPRISE SESSIONS covers it all and then some for Grampires of all stripes. Produced by Emmylou Harris and Parsons cohort James Austin, this beautifully designed three-disc set includes one disc devoted to each solo record and a third featuring outtakes from each album's sessions. With fewer overdubs and Gram and Emmylou's vocals front-and-center in the mix, the final disc brims with the emotive soul and earthbound angelic vocals the two perfected. Among the final discs many highlights are looser alternate takes of "She" and "Streets of Baltimore" from GP and a "Hickory Wind" unadorned by the ridiculous fake crowd noise that mars the GRIEVOUS ANGEL version. The latter is the best and most stirring recorded performance of Parsons's signature song and alone worth the box's sticker price. Other features scattered on the first two discs include radio interviews (with Parsons's southern hippie charm in overdrive); captivatingly raw acoustic performances with him, Harris, ...
| | David Gilmour About Face CD (1984) Remastered
Covers music CDs
$7.59 Combining layered vocals with a heavily looped guitar sound, "Until We Sleep" begins ABOUT FACE with an almost Byrds-like quality, while the gentleness of the acoustic opening to the ballad "Murder" disguises its homicidal subject matter. Both "Love On the Air," and "All Lovers are Deranged," are distinguished by lyrics written by Pete Townshend, and "Blue Light" is an attempt at funk with a Floydian flavor. Gilmour's strength at ballad writing is evidenced in "Out of the Blue," while the obligatory instrumental is "Let's Get Metaphysical." The album closer is, appropriately enough, ...
| | David Gilmour CD (1978) Remastered
Covers songs
$6.79 Before David Gilmour virtually "became" Pink Floyd he was always the most likely member of the band (with the possible exception of de-facto leader Roger Waters) to release a solo album. 1978's welcome eponymous debut showcased his multi-faceted performing talents.
The album opener "Mihalis" is an ANIMALS period instrumental, which, along with "Raise My Rent," sounds like an outtake from that album. The beautiful "There's No Way Out of Here" begins with a lonely harmonica and, with "No Way" and "I Can't Breathe Anymore," expounds the album's main theme of being trapped in an untenable situation. "Cry From the Streets" is a nod to the blues, while the lovely "So Far Away" harks back to the ballads of OBSCURED BY CLOUDS. Almost a missing mid-period Floyd album, this solo effort is a must-have for all Pink Floyd fans.
By the time of David Gilmour's solo debut, he had not only established himself several times over as an underrated, powerful guitarist in Pink Floyd, but as a remarkably emotional singer, his soothing approach perfectly suited to such songs as "Wish You Were Here." The self-titled album, recorded with journeyman bassist Rick Wills and Sutherland Brothers drummer Willie Wilson, later to be part ...

Covers album
$13.65 Those who find the pairing of '70s rock god Robert Plant with contemporary bluegrass queen Alison Krauss unlikely have probably not been paying attention to Plant's latter-day work, which is full of intimate, acoustic-flavored balladry. While the organic-sounding, low-key Plant/Krauss ...

| | Pipes And Drums Of The New York Out Of The Blue CD (2003)
Covers songs
$18.99 In early July, 2003 the members of the NYPD Emerald Society Pipes & Drums went into the recording studio for the 3rd time. Two weeks of 14 hour recording days paid off with one of the \"finest\" collections of bagpipe music one would ever ask for. \"Out Of The Blue\" contains some old classics in keeping with the Band\'s tradition of passing on Irish culture through music, as well as some more modern, fast paced tunes. A special track on the CD, \"Inspectors Funeral\", will pull at your heart strings as you listen to the solemn audio of the funeral for a fallen NYPD hero. The New York City Police Department Emerald Society Pipes and Drums is the oldest and largest Police Pipe Band in America. Their roots trace back to 1959, when the idea to start a pipe band was born. One year later, on March 17, 1960, the Pipe Band performed in the New York City St. Patrick\'s Day Parade, and into history. It was a small Band that marched up Fifth Avenue that fateful day, born and nurtured by a group of men whose undying love and fierce pride in their Celtic Heritage was paramount. No one knew that day what that small band of marchers would mean to this city and to this country. Make no mistake about it. The Band has become a permanent fixture in the daily life of the New York City Police Department and New York. But more than that it has inspired Police Departments and Emerald Societies throughout the country to forge ahead and embrace the idea that the skirl of pipes is right, is proper, is comforting for the everyday police officer. Recognition of the Band\'s special place in history was evident in May of 1989 at the National Law Enforcement Memorial Day ceremonies in Washington D.C. when the Band led a parade of thirty other law enforcement pipe bands. A special event indeed but even more so when one realizes that all those Bands were a direct result of the hard work and dedication of this Band. They were the \"offspring.\" The people of New York know this Band. They know it from St. Patrick\'s Day, and they know it from the everyday events that this Band participates in throughout the city. And they know it from the Inspectors Funeral when this Band sends a member of the service killed in the line of duty home to be with God. There is no duty more important or more cherished. The Band is honored that it has been able to assist other locales in sending their brothers home; Chicago, Boston, Providence, Binghamton and Atlanta. The Band is proud that it has performed for all New Yorkers, in every borough and every neighborhood. It is a privilege we hold dear. We have also played for Popes and Presidents, captains of industry and college presidents. In addition the Band has appeared on numerous television shows and movies including the \"Today Show,\" \"Late Night ...
