Hollywood Undead specializes in an L.A.-flavored high-tech rap metal. If this was 2001 or so, they'd just be another face in the crowd, but the relative dearth of this once-popular fusion genre now makes their funked-up headbanging sound quite original. "Black Dahlia" pushes chugga-chugga guitars to the background as atmospheric synths take center stage as a sung chorus competes with the thuggish raps, and "This Love, This Hate" could almost be a gritty Duran Duran with its glossy new wave backing.
Zombies or not, Hollywood Undead are a true underground phenomenon. They built their reputation through word of mouth on social networking sites such as MySpace, and it was to the latter's fledgling record label offshoot that the six-member rap-rock troupe signed to in 2005. They later parted company with MySpace Records, preferring to seek another label rather than censor their lyrics, and it's hard to argue with their logic. Presented here in all its unedited glory, there's nothing particularly shocking about any of the lyrics on Swan Song -- in fact, there's very little that's interesting at all. Part of the problem lies in the fact that the group doesn't seem to know what it wants to be. Much of the album is given over to ironic frat-boy party rap: marquee singles "Everywhere I Go" and "No. 5" play fast and loose with misogynist and homophobic slurs, but it's a cheap way to win a laugh, and the jokes become stale long before Hollywood Undead are finished with them. Insufferable though the lyrics are, there are some genuinely good ideas here. "Everywhere I Go" and "No Other Place," in particular, are as danceable as any single in recent memory, and the production value is strong throughout the album. However, their attempts to get serious are about as convincing as their pimp credentials (i.e. not very) and the more intensified the mood, the more interchangeable the rappers become (only Charlie Scene stands out for his booming baritone). Tracks like "Young" and "This Love, This Hate" represent a low point, as the emcees trade ever-more-exasperated Marshall Mathers impersonations to the backdrop of imposing Wall of Sound guitars and angsty chorus vocals. Clearly, they have talent, but a giant question remains as to whether Hollywood Undead have the self-confidence to drop the gimmicky exterior and deliver something a little more substantial than dated clichés and mildly offensive lyrics. ~ Dave Donnelly

5 stars Only good rappers
Okay, usually I just listen to hXc metal music and a mixture of others. I have always thought rap seemed pointless and overrated and I hated it. Especially the popular trash today. But these guys are different from any other rapper you have ever heard. They can actually write and perform music with great skill and they don't seem so....rap-ish? Anyway, listen to these guys, they will blow your mind. Seriously.

Arguably the most vibrant and verbose lyricist out of the Wu, the Gza returns with his extraordinary fifth solo album, PRO TOOLS. Rather than recycling the winning formula of LIQUID SWORDS, the Genius and Co. have updated their attack strategy. The trademark Shaolin soul loops are still there, along with dramatic orchestral arrangements, but the Gza's flow is even more elevated than usual; with old-school cadences, his tone is laidback slick even while the rhymes paint incredibly vivid street narratives. The emphasis is on good old-fashioned storytelling here, as the man who penned such classics as "Labels" and "Publicity" mixes superb extended metaphors ("0% Finance," "Short Race") with multiple cautionary hood tales ("Path of Destruction," "Colombian Ties"). Still, the most intriguing cut might be "Paper Plate"--a subtle but relentless dis-track aimed squarely at 50 Cent. Ironically, the post-Wu era has also brought the Gza back to his low-budget roots with grimy basement beats courtesy of Bronze Nazareth, Dreddy Kruger, Mathematics, True Master, and the Rza. PRO TOOLS is a worthy challenge to Ghostface for the crown of hottest Wu Tang alum.
The Gza's outstanding fourth solo LP returns in instrumental form for dedicated beatheads and upstart MCs looking for tracks to rock over. THE PRO TOOLS INSTRUMENTALS is ideal for both, with production work that veers between head-nodding funk and finely crafted soft soul-based hip-hop. Beats come courtesy of Dreddy Kruger, True Master, Black Milk, Bronze Nazareth, Mathematics, and the Rza.
Even fans who didn't care for the laid-back, murky feel of GrandMasters -- GZA's 2005 effort with DJ Muggs -- had to give the album respect, well aware that the Wu-Tang member was adjusting his style for the DJ and just grooving it slower with the same high-quality rhymes. The bar remains just as high on the man's follow-up, but anyone alienated by GrandMasters' attitude will be pleased that the uptempo and sometimes oddball rhymes are back in full force here and sit on a set of melancholy soul productions that have that classic Wu atmosphere. On the opening "Pencil," GZA's Wu brother Masta ...
