Best known for their long tenure on the public radio mainstay A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION, folk-pop duo Robin and Linda Williams return with the gentle concept album BUENA VISTA. A meditation on small-town life centered on the Virginia town of the same name, the roots of country music (particularly on the outstanding "Maybelle's Guitar and Monroe's Mandolin"), and the joys of growing old gracefully, BUENA VISTA is a relaxed blend of pop, country, folk, and bluegrass. Guests include bluegrass great Jerry Douglas.
Photographer: Patrick Hinely.
Personnel: Linda D. Williams (vocals, guitar, banjo); Tim O'Brien (guitar, electric guitar, bouzouki, mandolin, fiddle); Jerry Douglas (lap steel guitar, dobro); Ray Bonneville (harmonica); John Jarvis (piano).
Audio Mixer: Tim O'Brien.
Dirty Linen (p.39) - "[T]he Wiliamses have penned a finely detailed drawing of American characters....Music and meaning are seamless, genuine, and first-rate, as we have come to expect from this gifted team." | | Kitty Wells Country Music Hall Of Fame CD (1991)
Buena Vista CD music
$5.55 Recorded in Nashville, Tennessee between May 1952 and May 1965. Includes liner notes by Ronnie Pugh.
At only 16 songs this is a necessarily incomplete best-of collection (Wells has had more than 80 country chart hits), and it neglects the many smash duet records she made with Red Foley, Roy Acuff, and honky-tonk king Webb Pierce. Still, most everything here, recorded in her heyday between 1952 and 1965, is hard country heaven, from the original country woman's song "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky-Tonk Angels" to the divorce song to end all divorce songs "Will Your Lawyer Talk to God." Purists may prefer the '50s stuff (the first eight cuts), where the instrumentation is as sparse as if it was recorded on some back porch in Appalachia. But even when the production gets slicker, Wells' vocals here are the very essence of that high lonesome sound.
This is part of MCA's Country Music Hall Of Fame Series.
Personnel: Kitty Wells (vocals, guitar); Eddie Hill, Herman Wade, Harold Bradley, John D. Loudermilk, Johnnie Wright, Paul Yandell, Ray Edenton (guitar); Johnny Sibert, ...
| | Willie Nelson Sound In Your Mind CD (1976)
Buena Vista music CDs
$6.09 THE SOUND IN YOUR MIND was released one year after Willie's breakthrough hit, RED HEADED STRANGER, and not surprisingly the album shares a lot in common with its predecessor. Both records are sparsely arranged, with Willie's vocals and gut-string guitar sharing the mix with Mickey Raphael's harmonica, sister Bobbie Nelson's piano, and little else. Both successfully sustain a mood of quiet ...

| | Del Shannon Home & Away CD (2006) (Import) England; United Kingdom
Buena Vista album
$10.49 Like so many rock & rollers swept off the charts by the rising tide of psychedelia, Del Shannon turned on, tuned in and dropped out via 1967's lysergic pop suite Home & Away, a surprisingly effective and engaging LP cut during his brief affiliation with Rolling Stones Svengali Andrew Loog Oldham. While titles like "Runaway '67" certainly seem to lend credibility to Liberty Records' decision to shelve the sessions, on further investigation the record is a compelling interpretation of Shannon's signature heartbreak pop, viewed through the looking glass of Oldham's Baroque, candy-colored orchestrations -- Shannon's otherworldly vocals achieve a new maturity and poignancy here, substituting their traditional romantic longing with the desperation of an artist struggling to remain relevant and vibrant in a brave new world. EMI's 2006 reissue ...
