One of the pioneering and best-loved boy bands of the 1980s, the New Kids on the Block in their prime represented rosy-cheeked cuteness and innocent puppy love. In the long, album-less interim between 1994's FACE THE MUSIC and 2008's THE BLOCK, the Kids did a lot of growing up. The intervening 14 years have rubbed the teenaged glow off the group's sound and sensibility, and replaced it with a club-oriented vibe that is more concerned with sexing its listeners up than charming them with nostalgia.

From the opener "Click Click Click," which details a homemade photo shoot, it's clear that the emphasis is on adult themes, while "Grown Man" and "Big Girl Now" also sing the praises of adult fun. The album's sonic make-up is taken from contemporary R&B, radio-ready hip-hop, and digitized club music (the solo releases of fellow boy-band alum Justin Timberlake seems to be a touchstone), and a roster of guests, including Akon, Lady Gaga, and the Pussycat Dolls, help update THE BLOCK. The Kids don't bear much resemblance to their old selves, but longtime fans may still thrill to hear their favorite boy band back again.

The problem facing New Kids on the Block on their 2008 reunion The Block is the same one they had on their last album, 1994's Face the Music: the quintet are no longer kids and don't quite know how to be adults. That dilemma drove them apart back in 1994, as the group stumbled away from their clumsy stab at hip-hop on Face the Music, remembered chiefly for embarrassments like "Dirty Dawg" where the boys tried to be gangsta, as that was the style of the time. Fourteen years later, NKOTB are none the wiser, restyling themselves to fit into current trends and piling on guest artists by the dozens. Coming off the heels of the astounding multi-platinum success of Hangin' Tough and Step by Step, such desperate attempts to hang onto stardom made sense in 1994, but now that all the members save Joey McIntyre are pushing 40, it's awkward to hear the group abandon sprightly bubblegum for youthful rhythm-driven club music. At their peak, NKOTB only sang about puppy love -- how could they not, as their fans were almost entirely preteens too young to hear sticky songs of seduction, the kind that comprise the entirety of The Block. Two of these are pitched directly at those older fans -- "Big Girl Now," where the Kids sing to Lady GaGa about what they can finally do now that they're all growed up, and "Grown Man," where they sing pretty much the same thing with the Pussycat Dolls. They also turn an homage to "Dirty Dancing" into a bump and grind that is far, far from the innocence of the Patrick Swayze original, or the New Kids music, for that matter. Draped in washes of chilly analog synths straight out of Justin

5 stars They're Back and still Great!
Just one listen to the new album's smooth first track "Click, Click, Click" and you'll be glad the fellas finally reunited for another strong album. Often underrated, the NKOTB have some incredible vocals (Jordan Knight and Joey McIntyre could sing with the best of the best) and they shine once again on many of the album's fun new tunes. "Click, Click, Click" and the catchy ballad "Close To You" are perhaps some of their best work ever. There is lots of dancing to be had this time around too! Lots of clubbish dance tracks will get you on the dance floor to the New Kids' latest grooves. If you're a long time fan, there's no question that you have to own this CD. And if you're a newbie who likes today's R&B/dance sound, this CD will not disappoint one bit. The boys are back and I hope they're here to stay this time!

Two CD set. Before Backstreet Boys, N-Sync, Westlife and Take That, New Kids On The Block was the original act that kicked-started the 'boy band' craze that still continues to excite the charts over two decades later. This double disc set serves as a reminder of their immense success and offers up a bonus disc of rarities. Disc One features 19 of their most popular hits including 'You Got It (The Right Stuff)', 'Please Don't Go Girl', 'Hanging Tough', 'Step By Step', 'Tonight' and many more. Disc Two contains an additional 16 tracks including remixes of many of their hits plus the hard-to-find Jordan Knight ballad 'Angel of Love', the #1 single 'The Right Combination' from Seiko and Donnie Walhberg and much more. Sony. This European import is the last word on producer Maurice Starr's boy-toy collective New Kids on the Block. While the casual fan should find little to complain about with Columbia's far more streamlined Greatest Hits collection, it doesn't include the rare Jordan Knight ballad "Angel of Love" or Seiko and Donnie Wahlberg's "The Right Combination," as #1's does, let alone 34 tracks over the span of two CDs. ~ James Christopher Monger Personnel: Joey McIntyre, Jordan Knight (vocals).

The third chapter in the CUTTING EDGE saga, this installment follows a similar storyline to the 1992 classic, but this time around, things are reversed. When male ice skater Zack (Matt Lanter) needs a female partner after his ex-girlfriend breaks her leg, he looks to girl hockey star Alejandra (Francia Raisa), and raises some eyebrows in the process. While audiences will get a kick out of this switch, Zack's coaches disapprove, which puts the skater in a difficult position. When a championship figure skater's partner is injured, he teams up with a female ex-hockey player and falls for her in the process.

In the second half of the 1980s, the New Kids on the Block were the ultimate teen idols, taking the pop charts by storm and starting a whole wave of boy bands. GREATEST HITS brings together their finest moments, and reveals just how seamless the group's mix of cotton-candy pop hooks, R&B-influenced vocal delivery, hip-hop-inflected grooves, and bad-boy rock-star attitude really was, from the forceful rap-meets-rock "Hangin' Tough" to the pleading, romantic balladry of "Please Don't Go Girl." Producers: Maurice Starr, Walter Afanasieff, New Kids On The Block, Michael Jonzun. Compilation producer: Al Quaglieri. New Kids on the Block: Danny Wood, Donnie Wahlberg, Joey McIntyre, Jordan Knight (vocals). New Kids On The Block: Jordan Knight, Joey McIntyre, Danny Wood, Donnie Wahlberg, Jonathan Knight (vocals). A good year for nostalgic New Kids on the Block fans, 2008 not only saw the release of a GREATEST HITS collection and a new studio album (THE BLOCK), it closed out with this reissue of the boy band's 1989 holiday album, MERRY, MERRY CHRISTMAS. The five fresh-faced lads take on Yuletide standards--see the synth-heavy versions of "White Christmas" and "Little Drummer Boy"--but also perform plenty of NKOTB Christmas originals, most notably "This One's For the Children."

In the epic David vs. David face-off at the end of AMERICAN IDOL's seventh season, teen pop sensation David Archuleta was decisively defeated by more experienced rock performer David Cook, who issued this 2008 self-titled debut a week after Archuleta's own album. Aided by a veritable army of veteran alt-rock songwriters, including Johnny Rzeznik (Goo Goo Dolls) and Raine Maida (Our Lady Peace), Cook shines brightest with "Light On," a soaring anthem co-penned by Chris Cornell (Soundgarden, Audioslave). Three Times And Waving
Breathless Three Times And Waving CD  (1987) (Import) United Kingdom

CD $18.55
Originally released in 1987, THREE TIMES & WAVING delivers 9 tracks of jangly alt rock from the U.K.'s Breathless. A transitional album for Breathless, Three Times, the group's sophomore full-length effort, features departing drummer Sayer on half the tracks and new recruit Watts on the remainder. The blend of the tracks is more seamless than might be thought, perhaps signaling how well Watts could slot into his new band's sound as well as hinting at similar dark undercurrents in both Breathless and Danielle Dax's music. As a whole, Three Times continues and refines the haunting elegance of the group's earlier work -- each of the bandmembers' individual strengths comes to the fore time and again, all contributing to the greater whole just so. Consider "Is It Good News Today?," the first track on the album featuring Watts. The introduction features soft filigrees from Mundy and similarly intriguing keyboards from Appleton, whose singing also contrasts Neufeld's fluid, slowly building bass. After a pause, Watts brings in the drumming more and more until the whole band takes off on a surging, soaring jam, post-punk epic-scale rock worthy of the name but thanks to Appleton's tender singing never sounding overbearing. There are other full rock-out moments elsewhere on Three Times -- the quick blast of the title track, the nervous tension of "Dizzy Life," which even includes some heavy drum blasts from Sayer -- but plenty of the dark passion of the band as well. If Breathless isn't quite yet ready to record sheer masterpieces like "Moment By Moment," collectively the foursome is getting darn close, as "Into the Fire" and "Waiting on the Wire" demonstrate. The latter in particular reaches grand heights, with one of Appleton's best vocals and some searing guitar work from Mundy leading into another slow, majestic overall crescendo of sound from the band as a whole. It never fully explodes, just reaches an appropriately sudden stop. ~ Ned Raggett “Firmament splicing guitar buoyed up by the voice of an angel vocals” Music WeekBreathless’ widely acclaimed second album Three Times And Waving was recorded and co mixed by John Fryer, best known for his work with This Mortal Coil and The Cocteau Twins. Three Times And Waving features the first recordings with new drummer Martyn Watts who had recently joined Breathless after leaving Danielle Dax.Breathless play shimmering Space Rock soundscapes and love lost laments merging the haunting desolation of Low with the explosive crescendos and brooding atmospherics of Spiritualized and early Pink Floyd. Breathless’ singer Dominic Appleton is also well known for his work with This Mortal Coil, contributing lead vocals on both Filigree And Shadow and Blood.Breathless Three Times And Waving Melody Maker 1987Breathless are beyond psychodelia’s disturbances and free- form emancipation, for all the traces of it that can still be heard in “Three TImes And Waving”. Instead they travel the conduits between late Sixties and early Seventies guitar rock and the sublime oblivion that the new progressives (4AD bands like the Cocteau Twins and This Mortal Coil) project. The closest here to the Cocteaus are “Sold Down The River” and “Waiting On The Wire” . In “Waiting” great unoccupied spaces open up behind the delayed monolith guitar chords and albescent glaze of lightweight drum programmes, until it all falls away into the hammered steel. There’s a different, but parallel, path to seizure in “Dizzy Life”, which submits halfwy thropugh to deliberaate, suspended guitar chords that could be mid Seventies Pink Floyd. But “Is It Good News Today?” and “Working For Space” pass nearer to the rapt meanderings of Syd Barrett’s “Careful With That Axe”.They succumb to a raga-rock dazzlement and trance, reach critical mass anddisappear in their own solar flare. Bearings are forgotten in ”Let’s Make A Night Of It”, as sound propogates through imaginary canopies u

Toby Koenigsberg Sense CD  (2006)

Pianist Toby Koenigsberg's second CD as a leader is a mind-stretching trio affair featuring bassist Tyler Abbott and drummer Jason Palmer, delving into famous and lesser-known jazz compositions, standards, and originals. While most pianists tackle Bud Powell's works in a fairly straightforward manner, Koenigsberg and his musicians reshape "Oblivion" with a steady, pulsing Latin rhythm behind the pianist which seems out of kilter but fits beautifully. Powell's humorous Asian-flavored "So Sorry Please" is approached in a disjointed fashion where the drums and bass frequently seem independent of the piano, though Koenigsberg retains Powell's wit. The late Bill Evans' "Show Type Tune" is one of his less frequently performed pieces; the trio's interpretation kicks off with Palmer starting on brushes and switching later to sticks; while Koenigsberg's approach to it is choppier than Evans' recording, it is no less valid. The one standard is a lush, almost hushed arrangement of "My Foolish Heart" that deserves to be savored. The leader's "Variant Strain" is a constantly shifting work that evolves subtly from its initial waltz setting, with the pianist sitting out as Abbott and Palmer build it to a stirring climax. The CD is bracketed by a pair of intriguing works written by trumpeter André Canniere, both of which ignite the trio's imagination. Ideally, this highly recommended CD is best enjoyed in a quiet room devoid of distractions, with low lighting and a glass of a favorite vintage wine. ~ Ken Dryden `Of the many eclectic influences informing the Toby Koenigsberg Trio - Jarrett, Mehldau, Evans, Clusone 3, Elliott Smith - none are more apparent than that provided by their own inner voices. Fresh and spirited with prodigious chops and a depth of musica Photographer: Todd Bishop. Personnel: Toby Koenigsberg (piano); Jason Palmer (drums).
