Personnel: Ari Hoenig (drums); Gilad Hekselman, Jonathan Keisberg, Jonathan Kreisberg (guitar); Will Vinson (alto saxophone); Chris Potter (tenor saxophone); Matt Penman, Orlando LeFleming (bass instrument). Audio Mixer: Peter Karl. Recording information: Peter Karl Studios, Brooklyn, NY (04/01/2006-06/11/2007). Photographers: Jimmy Katz; Ari Hoenig. Drummer Ari Hoenig's light touch and crisp writing make Bert's Playground a fun session. With a constantly shifting cast of musicians throughout the date, the drummer primarily utilizes a trio with either Jonathan Kreisberg or Gilad Hekselman on guitar and Matt Penman or Orlando LeFleming on bass. John Coltrane's "Moment's Notice" provides a solid opener with guest tenor saxophonist Chris Potter, though it is not played as a straight barnburner, while Kreisberg adds a bit of fun with his detour into "Autumn in New York" in the midst of his solo. His spacious, quiet trio scoring of Wayne Shorter's "Fall" works well without the presence of a sax. Hekelsman is front and center in the sparkling post-bop treatment of the standard "The Way You Look Tonight." Hoenig is all alone on a spacious, haunting arrangement of "'Round Midnight," not exactly a piece that one expects in such a setting. Alto saxophonist Will Vinson is added for Hoenig's potent post-bop vehicle "Bert's Playground." ~ Ken DrydenDown Beat (p.93) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "'The Way You Look Tonight' is a trio feature for Gilad Hekselman's warm-toned guitar and bassist Orlando LeFleming's solid swing. Hoenig loves quoting melodies and riffs on the kit..." JazzTimes (p.87) - "Hoenig marshals his ever-more-refined skills to create an eclectic program of his original compositions and imaginative arrangements of tunes by Coltrane, Kern, Monk, Gershwin and Shorter." Bert's Playground
$12.89 Personnel: Thelonious Monk (piano); John Coltrane (tenor saxophone); Ahmed Abdul-Malik (bass instrument); Shadow Wilson (drums). Liner Note Authors: Larry Appelbaum; Robin D.G. Kelley; Ira Gitler; Lewis Porter; Amiri Baraka; Stanley Crouch; Ashley Kahn. Recording information: Carnegie Hall, New York, NY (11/29/1957). Larry Appelbaum, the recording lab supervisor at the Library of Congress, came across this tape by accident while transferring the library's tape archive to digital. What a find. Forget the Five Spot recording that sounds like it was recorded inside of a tunnel from the far end. The sound here is wonderfully present and contemporary. More importantly, this band -- which also included drummer Shadow Wilson and bassist Ahmed Abdul-Malik -- had it right on November ...

| | Insect Digital Mass CD (2008)
Bert's Playground
$16.45 Sacramento-based electronic band Insect changed on April 16th, 2007. \"We were touring in Oregon, watching a newscast on the night of the Virginia Tech massacre. The fact that we weren\'t shocked by the incident was what actually disturbed us. And we knew that we weren\'t alone. That night, the concept of our new album was born. We set out to find why no one seems to give a damn about much of anything anymore.\" -Lead singer Mike Logan With their album release, Digital Mass, Insect has taken a journey into the causes of modern human detachment. In the process, they\'ve created an aggressive and dark, sometimes visual album about the Internet Age. How it ...
| | John Zorn Filmworks XX: Sholem Aleichem CD (2008)
Bert's Playground
$13.39 Composer: John Zorn. Personnel: Carol Emanuel (harp); Mark Feldman (violin); Erik Friedlander (cello); Rob Burger (accordion); Greg Cohen (bass instrument). Audio Mixer: Marc Urselli. Liner Note Author: John Zorn. Recording information: Eastside Sound, New York, NY. Arranger: John Zorn. This, the 20th volume of downtown composer John Zorn's Filmworks series of soundtrack albums, contains his original music for a documentary film of the 19th-century writer Sholem Aleichem. (Aleichem is best known for the stories that inspired the musical FIDDLER ON THE ROOF.) Composed for a small, chamber music-style group (strings, harp, accordion), it draws upon traditional Hebraic music, but not exclusively. This music is curiously modern while reveling in ancient traditions. The 20th volume in John Zorn's massive Film Works documentation project (begun in 1992), centers on director Joe Dorman's documentary about the legendary writer Sholem Aleichem, whose character-driven short stories the musical Fiddler on the Roof was loosely based upon. The director approached Zorn in May of 2008, yet he managed to write and record the score by the end of June. His chosen collaborators for the venture are the Masada String Trio (cellist Erik Friedlander, violinist Mark Feldman, and bassist Greg Cohen), accompanied by Rob Burger on accordion and harpist Carol Emanuel. The MST first played together on 1996's monumental Bar Kokhba. Burger is also a current regular in the Zorn stable, and Emanuel, who took part in early projects such as Spillane, The Bribe, Godard, and Cobra (as well the composer's woefully short-lived and undocumented Dorothy Ashby project). Musically, this project, for being centered on the folk themes from Eastern ...
