Germany's Enigma has returned with their seventh studio offering, SEVEN LIVES MANY FACES, which compares and contrasts the abstract notions of passion and pain, race and culture, beauty and darkness within a harlequin palette of sound. Composed, recorded, and produced by musical visionary Michael Crétu, SEVEN LIVES MANY FACES weaves a multi-colored tapestry that defies genre. Culling themes from classical, New Age, techno, club, hip-hop, rock, and world music, Crétu presents his most evolved musical statement to date. Featuring vocals by Andru Donalds, Margarita Roig, and Crétu's own sons Nikita and Sebastian, SEVEN LIVES MANY FACES is truly, as Crétu states on the official Enigma website, an "omni cultural" experience. Enigma mastermind Michael Crétu took a self-described "omnicultural" approach to his seventh release under the moniker, and while that progressive, pioneering notion looks good on paper, any sharp stylistic changes to the project's signature sound on Seven Lives Many Faces are subtle, to say the least. Once again, Crétu seamlessly blends ethnic fusion, new age, and neo-classical electronica into the perfect background music for a European tourism campaign commercial, peppering each track with his seemingly endless arsenal of samples, both new and old. When Enigma strikes a balance between the two worlds, as is the case on the elegant (and surprisingly muscular) first single "Seven Lives" and its spiritual and melodic counterpart "La Puerta del Cielo" (the latter most resembles the band's most notable hit, "Sadeness, Pt. 1") the results are quietly stunning, but in more cases than not, the new age, fortune-cookie derived lyrics (especially when sung in English) mirror the unimaginative, two-chord melodies that carry them along. ~ James Christopher Monger Seven Lives Many Faces Music Enigma Seven Lives Many Faces Songs Seven Lives Many Faces Music Seven Lives Many Faces Music Review Purchase Seven Lives Many Faces CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Enigma Voyageur (Deluxe) CD (2003) Special Package
Seven Lives Many Faces
$11.55 Enigma: Ruth-Ann, Andru Donalds, Michael Cretu, Sandra Cretu. Recorded at A.R.T. Studios, Ibiza, Spain. Personnel: Sandra Cretu, Matthew Herren, Michael Crétu, Andru Donalds (vocals). Recording information: A.R.T. Studios, Ibiza, Spain. Arrangers: Jens Gad; Michael Crétu. Michael Crétu's formula of weaving old and new world sounds through new age atmospherics and dance rhythms has resulted in four Enigma discs that have straddled the line between brilliance and self-indulgence. The plodding bombast of 2000's The Screen Behind the Mirror seemed to signal that Enigma had stretched itself to a point where an explosion of pompous musical goop was imminent. So what's to be done when the bubble's about to burst? Simply ease up, let out some of the stuffy air, and allow for some space to breathe -- and that is what Crétu has done with Voyageur. Utilizing a lighter production style, his compositions benefit from the lack of themes, chants, and assorted ethereal voices that began to plague his discs while still retaining the essence ...

| | Enigma Posteriori CD (2006)
Seven Lives Many Faces
$11.39 Enigma: Michael Crétu (various instruments). Recording information: Various Places With The ALCHEMIST (All In One Computed. Photographer: Marc Lagrange. Arranger: Michael Crétu. Released in 2006, Enigma's sixth album, A POSTERIORI, stays in the same techno-tinged vein of its predecessor, VOYAGEUR. On these 12 songs, sonic architect Michael Cretu focuses on synth-heavy grooves more than on New Age atmospherics, resulting in one of Enigma's more dance-oriented outings. Stand-out tracks include the house-influenced "Feel Me Heaven," the goth-leaning "Dancing with Mephisto," and the beat-driven "Hello and Welcome." Those seeking the act's exotic, dreamy sound (a la MCMXC A.D.) will find it bookending the record with "Eppur Si Muove" and "Goodbye Milky Way," but, for the most part, Cretu seems content to offer up tracks that are tailor-made to fit perfectly into the late-night playlists of European clubs. Enigma records must sell here in the States. In Europe, where virtually anything goes, they do; but here, one has to wonder after five albums that are only subtly different from one ...

Seven Lives Many Faces
$11.85 Personnel: Enya (vocals, various instruments); Pat Farrell & the Believers (guitar, 12-string guitar). Audio Mixer: Nicky Ryan. Recording information: Aigle Studio. Photographer: Simon Fowler. Arrangers: Enya; Nicky Ryan. Unlike Enya's 2006 EP, CHRISTMAS SECRETS, with which it shares no tracks, AND WINTER CAME is not a traditional Christmas album. It's more impressionistic than most, placing a handful of Christmas songs such as "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" in the midst of a shimmering soundscape of keyboards, strings, and Enya's trademark overdubbed vocal chorales. The mostly original material does an exceptional job of evoking a comforting midwinter landscape without resorting to sleigh bells or other Christmas music clichés. Highlights include "White Is in the Winter Night," "Last Time By Moonlight," and the evocative, childlike "Trains and Winter Rains." AND WINTER CAME is an unusual but lovely ...
