Saxophonist Kenny Garrett has explored post bop, fusion, modal music, and other styles on his studio albums, and he collects the cream of those explorations on this fine 2008 live set. SKETCHES OF MD, recorded live at New York City's Iridium, features saxophonist Pharoah Sanders, keys player Benito Gonzalez, drummer Jamire Williams, and bassist Nat Reeves, all of whom help create the album's sizzling interplay. The group stretches out on this set of Garrett originals, then locks in beautifully throughout a varied, satisfying evening.
