Purchase Best Of CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Johnny Hates Jazz Turn Back The Clock CD (1987)
Best Of
$8.69 With their dapper attire, clean-cut image, and glossy production, Johnny Hates Jazz were too slick to receive any respect. Consequently, the group's debut album Turn Back the Clock was unjustly thrashed in the press. Best known for its bittersweet hit single "Shattered Dreams," Turn Back the Clock is actually a well-crafted LP. On "Shattered Dreams," vocalist Clark Datchler sings of a breakup over a finger-snapping, synthesized groove. The success of the song is no mystery; it is unbelievably catchy. However, there are actually better ones on the album. The sentimental lyrics and shimmering keyboards of the title track express heartfelt feelings of nostalgia. The music on Turn Back the Clock is generally upbeat synth pop, but the words are often sad. Although Johnny Hates Jazz offer no profound revelations about failed relationships or lost love, there is genuine emotion beneath the studio luster of "What Other Reason," "Different Seasons," "Don't Let It End This Way," and "Foolish Heart." On "Heart of Gold," ...
| | Shai If I Ever Fall In Love CD (1992)
Best Of
$6.85 Apart from the gorgeous title track, most of the material on ...If I Ever Fall in Love is underdeveloped; although Shai sound terrific, their material doesn't match their vocal talents. There are occasional signs of promise, but the single is the only flat-out impressive track here. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
They may have an inconsistent set of material, but ...
| | Fame CD (1980) Bonus Tracks
Best Of
$9.49 Fame was a film directed by Alan Parker, a serious auteur (some would say overly serious, especially in light of the work that came later) who designed the film for posterity, and the same attitude carried over the music. Yes, the production techniques often do sound dated -- the over-reliance on state-of-the-art synthesizer ironically now sounds helplessly tied to the year of its creation -- but the music by Michael Gore is dynamic, varied, and alive, sung with real passion and vigor, and it still retains its essential spark 23 years after it was a pop culture phenomenon. Sure, it's glitzy and glossy, sounding like show tunes, but that's the tradition of this music, and it was done better than most Broadway tunes and movie soundtracks of the '80s. Years later, this still has the spark and vitality of kids trying to make their big break, no matter the kind of music they're singing, and that's one of the main reasons (along with Gore's fine compositions) Fame retains its power and entertainment value years later. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Given that Rhino/TCM's reissue of the original soundtrack to Alan Parker's 1980 film Fame arrived in spring of 2003, ...
| | X-Ecutioners Built From Scratch CD (2002)
Best Of
$6.05 This East Coast underground hip-hop crew rises up to the challenge of entering the mainstream on BUILT FROM SCRATCH. One of their many strengths is the fact that they make good use of turntablism, an art abandoned by far too many of their peers. The urgency they gain from this helps push their streetwise but never thuggish rhymes forward with alacrity. Amid the frenetic scratching and hyper-kinetic playground of beats, Roc Raida, ...

| | Speedranch Welcome To Execrate CD (1999)
Best Of
$15.19 This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by Speedranch & Jansky Noise.
Given the attention that Speedranch and Jansky Noise have received in the innovative music press (see Wire, October 1998), it's surprising that their sound hasn't been more frequently copied -- even more so since they're known to use the shareware audio program Audiomulch as a primary compositional tool. Perhaps the lack of imitators has to do with the perceived audacity of the group or just the prevalence of niches in the IDM world. On this, both groups' debut CD, they strive for audacity. Speedranch and Jansky Noise pull tracks from across the musical spectrum, sampling Stock, Hausen & Walkman, 2nd Gen, DJ Olive, and Mix Master Mike as well as getting production assistance from friends James Plotkin and David Shea. Throw in some found sound and bitter white noise and toss it in a centrifuge ...
