Comprised of 18 tracks culled from the singer/composer's first three decades, The Very Best of Enya was pieced together by the artist herself, along with longtime collaborators Nicky and Roma Ryan. Luckily, the trio seems enamored by most of the same songs that the general public is, resulting in one of those rare "greatest-hits" collections that goes deep without depriving the listener of the essentials. With tunes like "Orinoco Flow," "Caribbean Blue," and "Book of Days" in the pot and out of the way, it's easier to appreciate hidden gems like "Cursum Perficio," "Boadicea," "Trains and Winter Rains," and "Anywhere Is." Throwdown have had to eat a lot of crap in recent years because their vocalist, Dave Peters, is doing such a blatant, idolatrous imitation of Pantera/Down vocalist Phil Anselmo. It doesn't help that with 2005's Vendetta they shifted from the thick-necked, straight-edge hardcore of their early catalog to a version of the "groove metal" practiced by Pantera, Trivium, and other modern metal bands. On this latest album, though, Peters occasionally shifts from imitating Anselmo to imitating Anselmo-imitating- Mudvayne's Chad Gray. The music, too, has a lot of Mudvayne's combination of groove and progressive epic-ness, coupled with Pantera's ultra-punishing, almost industrial riffs. It is difficult to think of this as anything but pure joy, although in some ways it is less intense than other releases led by the remarkable violist Mat Maneri and it is stamped with a cerebral quality from the start. There is a surprisingly charming density, too, that comes through on most tracks, though as with most of his work, there are few if any melodic references but instead a focus on color and sound. Maneri carefully paces himself and the quintet so that every note counts, resulting in some of his most interesting work on disk. At times it might seem somewhat slow, even morose, but upon close listening a diversity and a depth are revealed that belie the noir episodes. Of course, it helps to have major talent such as bassist William Parker and multi-instrumentalist Joe McPhee, who is heard exclusively on soprano sax. Ultimately, what makes this so attractive is that the suite of tunes is somehow completely different than anything else that the violist has recorded before and it has the stamp of something important that transcends individual notes.
