| | Johnny Paycheck On His Way CD (2005)
Kenny Chesney - Road Case The Movie review
$12.05 Personnel: Johnny Paycheck (vocals, guitar). Liner Note Authors: Aubrey Mayhew; Tom Kittypaw. Although Johnny Paycheck (born Donald Eugene Lytle) looks surprisingly clean-cut and idol-worthy on the cover of ON HIS WAY, the music on offer is straight-up, tear-in-your-beer 1960s country. More than a decade before the bearded, cowboy-hat-wearing Paycheck hit the big time with the defiant "Take This Job and Shove It," the Ohio native was a baby-faced singer belting out songs in the country-crooner vein of George Jones and Ray Price. This excellent 2005 compilation presents 15 of Paycheck's best mid-'60s tracks, most notably the Hank Cochran-penned jukebox lament "A-11" and the lovelorn "Heartbreak, TN," by Jack Clement. Other standouts include the humorous tunes "Help Me Hank (I'm Fallin')," where Paycheck playfully begs Cochran to write him another hit, and "The Lovin' Machine," a gleefully innuendo-laced honky-tonk number. These recordings, which were frequently out of print before this Koch collection, are essential for Paycheck fans seeking to hear the late performer's underrated early work. The title of Koch's second collection of Johnny Paycheck's Little Darlin' recordings explains it all: this captures the period when Johnny was hitting his stride, when he was On His Way. If the first volume chronicled The Beginning, when Paycheck was finding his identity as he dabbled in Western swing and country staples, this collection -- consisting of material recorded in the mid-'60s (exact dates are nowhere to be found in the liner notes, regrettably) ...
| | Ray Wylie Hubbard Delerium Tremolos CD (2005)
Kenny Chesney - Road Case The Movie DVD
$13.05 Personnel: Ray Wylie Hubbard (percussion); Eliza Gilkyson, Jack Ingram, Slaid Cleaves (vocals); Gurf Morlix (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, steel guitar, mandolin, percussion, background vocals); Ray Bonneville (harmonica); John Hahn, Rick Richards (drums); Kimmie Rhodes, Patty Griffin (background vocals). Audio Mixer: Gurf Morlix. Liner Note Author: Mark Denning. Recording information: Rootball Studio, Austin, TX. Photographer: Mathew Sturtevant. It seems strange that folks like Ray Wylie Hubbard once lived such wild lives but have been able to make solid comebacks later in life. Strange, because Hubbard, on Delirium Tremolos, sounds as good as he ever has. Better yet, the album has a nice, mellow country sound, and Hubbard has discarded, for the time being, his penchant for preachy, comic songs. It doesn't hurt that the album's been produced by Gurf Morlix, nor that he's joined by great harmony singers like Patty Griffin and Eliza Gilkyson. Hubbard's choice of songs are solid too, combining deep but real lyrics ("And the rock and roll gypsies are ridin' tonight/ On the carnival strips they'll stay") with good melodies and hooks. The first three songs, ...

| | Heather Myles Rum & Rodeo CD (2005) Remastered
Kenny Chesney - Road Case The Movie video
$11.39 Personnel: Heather Myles (background vocals); Heather Myles (vocals); Bob Gothar (guitar); Rick Shea (acoustic guitar); Gary Brandin (steel guitar); Brantley Kearns (mandolin, fiddle, background vocals); Brantley Kerns (mandolin, fiddle); Dick Fegy (mandolin); Dusty Wakeman (bass instrument); Keith Rosier (acoustic bass); Jeff Donovan, Larry Mitchell (drums); Lorraine Rios, Kelly McGuire (background vocals); Greg Leisz (guitar, acoustic guitar, steel guitar, lap steel guitar, dobro); Buddy Miller (guitar, background vocals); Skip Edwards (accordion, piano, organ, keyboards); Donald Lindley (drums). Audio Mixer: Dusty Wakeman. Audio Remasterer: Bob Stone. Recording information: Mad Dog Studio, Venice, CA; Sunnyside Studios, Los Angeles, CA; West Beach Recording, Hollywood, CA. Photographer: Barbara Green. In a better world, Heather Myles would be a bigger star than Shania Twain or Faith Hill -- or at very least a bigger country star. Possessing a voice that blends the homey sass of Loretta Lynn with the sweetness and precision of Patsy Cline while adding a nobody's-fool strength and modern-day spunk that's all her own, Myles cut some of the finest female honky tonk of the 1990s, and by all rights she should have a handful of hit records to her credit, but for the moment she has to settle for the admiration of people who still dig country in its more honest form (among them fans Dwight Yoakam and Merle Haggard). Rum and Rodeo is a compilation that gathers ...
