Lowdown album
$21.00 Comprised of 18 tracks culled from the singer/composer's first three decades, The Very Best of Enya was pieced together by the artist herself, along with longtime collaborators Nicky and Roma Ryan. Luckily, the trio seems enamored by most of the same songs that the general public is, resulting in one of those rare "greatest-hits" collections that goes deep without depriving the listener of the essentials. With tunes like "Orinoco Flow," "Caribbean Blue," and "Book of Days" in the pot and out of the way, it's easier to appreciate hidden gems like "Cursum Perficio," "Boadicea," "Trains and Winter Rains," and "Anywhere Is." Also notable is the inclusion of "May It Be" and a previously unreleased version of "Aníron (I Desire)," both of which originally appeared on the soundtrack for the first chapter of Peter Jackson's beloved Lord of the Rings trilogy. ~ James Christopher Monger

| | Slayer World Painted Blood CDs (2009) With DVD; Deluxe Edition; Digipak
Lowdown CD music
$19.79 Of the "big four" original thrash bands (the other three being Metallica, Anthrax, and Megadeth), Slayer was the least compromising and most consistent. As such, 2009's WORLD PAINTED BLOOD recalled more than the title of Slayer's 1986 masterpiece REIGN IN BLOOD; it shared the earlier album's ferocious aggression and trademark speed metal-meets-hardcore sound. Throughout, the sound is lean and mean, with bassist/vocalist Tom Araya's vocals mixed relatively dry and upfront, giving the album a bracing, fist-to-the-face force. Jackhammer tracks such as "Hate Worldwide" and "Psychopathy Red" are ...

Lowdown album
$8.35 Digitally remastered by Eddie Schreyer (November 1993, Future Disc).
Boasting the awesome "Chemical Warfare," a regular staple of Slayer's live shows, the Haunting the Chapel EP was a more crucial stepping stone in the legendary L.A. band's career development than many give it credit for. Issued in between the band's very promising debut and the following year's more sonically ripened Hell Awaits, Haunting the Chapel offers important clues about this transition period, which saw Slayer's rock-based song structures give way to the non-linear, genre-defining style thereafter ...

| | Brian Setzer The Ultimate Christmas Collection CDs (2008) With DVD
Lowdown album
$15.69 Way back when his neo-rockabilly band Stray Cats crashed MTV with a greasy, tattooed image, no one could have predicted that Brian Setzer would age into such a crack big-band leader. His Brian Setzer Orchestra has been responsible for Christmas music that spans generational appeal by combining the big-band swing of Glenn Miller with Setzer's own high-roller rock & roll. This collection culls the best from the Orchestra's previous Christmas albums, including standards like "White Christmas" and "Jingle Bell Rock," alongside rockabilly-flavored novelties like ...
