| | Frank Sinatra Nothing But The Best CD (2008) Remastered
Jazz music CDs
$15.65 "The Chairman of the Board" died in May of 1998, yet his music sounds as vital and relevant today as ever. Released on the 10th anniversary of his death--in coordination with a slew of DVD releases commemorating the singer's acting career as well as an official U.S. Postal Service stamp--NOTHING BUT THE BEST provides an excellent look at Sinatra's tenure at the Reprise label. Among the album's 22 vintage cuts are classics such as "The Way You Look Tonight," "Luck Be a Lady," "Strangers in the Night," and "My Way." The disc also contains a bonus track in the previously unreleased recording of "Body and Soul." Diehard Sinatra fans will likely own most of this material, yet as a greatest hits set (albeit covering the Reprise years only) NOTHING BUT THE BEST lives up to its title.

| | Robben Ford Soul On Ten CD (2009)
Jazz songs
$15.29 Some of guitarist Robben Ford's weaknesses, such as song composition and vocals, are rectified or at least made less obvious, on this predominantly live release. On his fourth release for the Concord label, Ford is able to cherrypick better material from inconsistent albums, unearth choice covers, and generally broaden the music with his fiery playing. This, along with the natural energy generated by the stage environment, focuses attention on the guitarist's skills as a creative six-string bluesman who expands the narrow confines of the genre by adding soul and jazz influences. He kicks off the set with a lazy, wah-wah enhanced "Supernatural," the title track to his 1999 disc, and revs up ...

| | Michael Hedges Aerial Boundaries CD (1985)
Jazz CD music
$7.59 Michael Hedges is considered by many one of the most important innovators of the acoustic guitar. His total dedication to the acoustic guitar enabled him to develop a new approach to the instrument that transcended anything done before. He could sound like two--at times even three--guitarists playing at once, and his compositions drew on a wide variety of influences, from the earthy to the academic. While he is usually associated with the new age movement that flourished in the '80s and early '90s (having recorded on the flagship Windham Hill label), the reach of his music extends far beyond the drivel that the tag suggests.
AERIAL BOUNDARIES incorporates all the elements that characterize Hedges' music: astounding technique, innovative composition, and a spirit of exploration. Where many a musician with half of Hedges' ability would be prone to showboating, the guitarist seems to have thrown away the idea of ego altogether, opting instead for an almost ascetic purity of sound. The result is the groundbreaking music that this record captures.

| | Kitty Margolis Heart & Soul: Live In San Francisco CD (2004)
Jazz songs
$13.89 Recorded live at Broadway Studios Nightclub, San Francisco, California on June 5-6, 2003.
Critically acclaimed jazz vocalist Kitty Margolis returns to her roots with Heart & Soul: Live in San Francisco in celebration of the 15th anniversary of Mad-Kat, the record label she co-founded with fellow San Francisco Bay Area vocalist Madeline Eastman. Margolis' voice is filled with the allied influences of such great jazz vocalists as Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, and Betty Carter, but Kitty has marvelously achieved a certain balance of structure and soulful improvisation that expresses her own life and times. Her arrangements of the standards heard here are both versatile and ripe with assurance and provide ample room for her to swing hard with innovative vocal gymnastics or to reflect with quiet contemplation. Her sense of humor has also enamored her to audiences around the globe. On the opener, "Love Walked In," Margolis is in full stride, humorous, and immediately takes command of her audience. She involves them with her classic repartee prior to launching into her stinging arrangement of "A Sleepin' Bee." She continues the jazz standard and is swinging hard on "Summertime," bopping and scatting on this scorching interpretation she co-arranged with Joyce Cooling. Prominent mention goes to pianist Michael Bluestein, who brilliantly captures the mindset and glorious shades of Margolis' remarkable voice -- be it her rendering of "Heart and Soul" as a heavy romantic ballad or comping her innovative reworking of "My Favorite Things" as an up-tempo swinger with elongated phrasings, amazing improvised vocalese, and brilliant restrained fire. They end the set with a lovely piano/vocal duet they co-arranged titled "While We're Young," and leave you, the listener, with an amazing sensitivity of what that night in San Francisco must have been like. Margolis is truly adept and remains in the front ranks of jazz interpreters. She commands instant attention to every word she sings on Heart & Soul: Live in San Francisco and is quite, quite glorious. ~ Paula Edelstein
Personnel: Kitty Margolis (vocals); Michael Bluestein (piano); Allison Miller (drums).

| | Robin Hackett One Foot Barefoot Hard Left CD (2006)
Jazz album
$18.99 Robin HackettMs. Hackett’s song Hard Left was recently featured on the CBS Hit Comedy How I Met your Mother. It’s more than just the distinctive, silky voice that has won Robin Hackett acclaim. She’s also a respected musician and accomplished songwriter brazenly paving the road with a new genre of music called “urban folk.” Defined as a co-mingling of contemporary, pop, jazz, folk and world music, “urban folk” is as much about the music as it is the musician. In a world where creativity is not always at the forefront, Robin has been creating music as eclectic as her upbringing. Born the only daughter of an Air Force sergeant, Robin grew up along the Rhine River in a small German village. With no American television and too much time on her hands, she quickly gravitated toward an old beat up guitar and the book “Learn To Play the Guitar in Ten Days.” It was then her creative journey was launched. “Not a day went by when my parents weren’t playing the likes of Joni Mitchell, John Coltrane, Wes Montgomery, Crosby Stills & Nash, and Nancy Wilson records, I just soaked in those sounds”. Once Robin returned to the States she set her sights on New York City and immediately following college graduation moved to the Big Apple. It was in those first years that time seasoned her voice and experience seasoned the artist. Since making her musical debut with an acclaimed collection of songs in her first CD One Foot Barefoot, she’s won the hearts of Internet listeners worldwide. Robin’s fans voted Sayin Goodbye as the #1 Jazz song on mp3.com and tunes Jimmy Dean and Come On Love as the # 2 and 3 best folk songs of the internet community. She appeared on the Rollingstone.com charts along with other notables such as K.D. Lang and Emmy Lou Harris. Robin performed in the world famous JVC Jazz Festival in New York City and was a Lilith Fair Finalist. She’s opened up for Elektra Recording artist Keb Mo’ and Woodstock legend Ritchie Havens. Robin was also featured on CNBC television and has appeared in Acoustic Guitar Magazine, PC Magazine, and Mac World Magazine.Today Robin’s music is as rich and earthy as the sounds of Sheryl Crow, K D Lang, Sarah Maclachlan, and Alanis Morrissette. There are also subtle flavorings of classic greats Nina Simone and Sarah Vaughn. And while it is hard to pigeon hole her complexity, her songwriting shares a past with icons Carol King, Ricky Lee Jones and Bob Dylan. Fans say ‘She sings jazz like she invented it and folk as if it was invented for her’Robin is again ...

Jazz CD music
$17.69 Pairadeux - One man, one woman, one unparalleled musical experience. There are cover bands, there are acoustic ensembles, there are electronica groups—and then there’s Pairadeux, the Denver duo that is all of the above, topped by a sweet coating of Colorado soul. A pair of friends sharing their love of rock & roll’s rich tradition with all who hear; such has always been the essence of Pairadeux. Those convictions speak to people of all ages, bringing younger audiences into classic rock and older listeners into newer music. In live performance, Pairadeux specializes in wide, dynamic sound from a minimalist operation. Miss Elizabeth’s voice is compared by many to Janis Joplin and Ann Wilson (among other lady greats). Neil’s acoustic guitar mastery, with its electric infusion, along with live loop sampling and multi-effects synthesizers for both guitar and vocals, has become Pairadeux’s legacy, and a force with which to be reckoned. Their cover-tune renditions have earned their own reputation as consistently fresh, stirring, unique and, more often than not, better than the original compositions. This talent is evident more than anywhere in Pairadeux’s latest exciting release, Pairadeux Under Cover, Part Deux. On this double-album, Neil and Miss Elizabeth have effectively blended all of their strengths into one. Disc One features their acclaimed interpretations of cover songs, as studio cuts and live recordings. Disc Two graces fans with some of their captivating original music. Featuring fan-favorite covers like “Take Me to the River”, “Over My Head (Cable Car)” ...
