Xystus is a Dutch progressive metal band formed in 1999 by drummer Ivo Van Dijk and guitarist/vocalist Bas Dolmans. They enlisted bassist Mark Brekelmans and second guitarist Bob Witsma. Through the course of releasing two albums - 2004's 'Receiving Tomorrow' and 2006's 'Surreal' - the band built up a buzz and fanbase in The Netherlands. The band supported Kamelot and made numerous festival appearances. In December 2005, Xystus went on a European tour in support of Epica. The band had even greater ambitions and in 2006 they contacted the Utrechtsch Studenten Concert - the oldest symphony orchestra in The Netherlands. The resulting two year collaboration resulted in the rock opera Equilibrio. Conceived as both an actual stage production and studio recording, Equilibrio was performed to four sold out audiences in July 2008 - over 4,000 people witnessed the opera.Sensory is proud to release the studio recording of Equilibrio, which features key scenes from the opera.
Although European classical music has influenced progressive metal, it is rare that the metal and classical worlds actually have any type of serious interaction. But on Equilibrio, the Dutch prog metal band Xystus join forces with the Utrechtsch Studenten Concert Orchestra (the oldest symphony orchestra in the Netherlands). Xystus' collaboration with Utrechtsch resulted in a live theatrical presentation of Xystus' rock opera Equilibrio as well as the 56-minute studio version heard on this progressive metal/progressive rock CD, which has a science fiction/fantasy plot and is bound to inspire a wide variety of reactions -- some of them positive, some of them negative. Equilibrio won't win over critics of prog metal and prog rock, who will no doubt call the album overblown, silly, and pretentious and point to it as a perfect example of why punk absolutely had to happen back in the 1970s. But what is pretentious to one person is ambitious to another, and a big part of Equilibrio's charm is the fact that it doesn't run away from the stereotypes and bloated excesses of prog metal and prog rock -- quite the opposite, in fact. Performed without the least bit of irony, Equilibrio enthusiastically embraces those stereotypes and excesses and does so without apology. The result is a well-crafted, well-executed disc that won't appeal to people who insist that they can only handle prog metal and prog rock in small doses but will easily appeal to prog's diehards. And the fact that Equilibrio represents an actual collaboration between a metal band and a full-fledged symphony orchestra is certainly historic; how many metal bands that call themselves symphonic will ever have any serious interaction with honest to God classical and theatrical musicians? Not many. Equilibrio is an engaging rock/classical/theatrical collaboration -- excesses and all. ~ Alex Henderson
Xystus: Bas Dolmans (vocals, guitar); Bob Wijtsma (guitar); Joris VanDeKerkhof (synthesizer); Mark Brekelmans (bass guitar); Ivo Van Dijk (drums).

Equilibrio album
$13.49 The second Liquid Tension Experiment album doesn't contain anything quite as self-indulgent as its predecessor's chops-heavy half-hour jam session "Three Minute Warning"; the epic piece here, the 17-minute "When the Water Breaks," is much more composed and therefore focused (even if it's not what you'd call a tight listen). ...

Equilibrio CD music
$8.39 The second album by Italian power metal act Labyrinth since an intra-band schism led to the departure of leader and primary singer Olaf Thörsen, 6 Days to Nowhere continues the near-total stylistic shift begun with its predecessor, 2005's Freeman. Abandoning the tropes of contemporary European metal almost entirely, 6 Days to Nowhere is a melodic hard rock album in the '80s style. New singer Roberto Tiranti has settled comfortably into his role, and the prog ...

| | Alper Sayleme CD (2006)
Equilibrio songs
$10.15 Turkish-American songwriter ALPER brings you an exciting mix of Turkish pop and New Electronica. The upbeat title track “Söyleme” is ALPER’s first Turkish single and the first of its kind to have a buzz before its release. The much-anticipated song “Söyleme” is surrounded by the powerful new ballad “Aglarim” and three instrumental New Electronica tracks. This is ALPER’s sophomore release following the successful debut of “Popular Lane”, which is also available here at CD Baby. “Söyleme” starts with “Aglarim”, which is best described as a song about nostalgia. While the literal translation of “Aglarim” is “I’ll cry”, it speaks to a wide generation of foreigners who have lived away from their motherland for decades. It starts simply with a confession of a yearning for a loved one’s presence and progresses into tears for the good memories. Those tears are washed away quickly with the catchy introduction to “Söyleme”, which you can download as a ring-tone for free from ALPER’s website (www.bidbox.com). The title track “Söyleme” continues the theme of a yearning, but on a much lighter note. “Don’t ever say my name” is the translation of the main chorus and the song captures a refusal to hear a name after a broken relationship.“Last Summer” is a soft transition into the New Electronica part of the album. It mixes Turkish and ...

$34.29 The Music...In the context of music making and playing, Esther and Howard are a couple from opposite sides of the world who share the same love for and style in playing music. Their guitar dialogue is a mixture of finger picking and dynamic strumming within a framework of folk-pop songs. Energy, Communication and Feeling are the primary aspects. Duality in balance - masculine and feminine – structure and improvisation – loud and soft – fast and slow - thought and feeling. Lyrically, the theme is most often reflecting the state of heart within the domain of relationship – a fancy way of saying: They play original Love SongsThe Album...“Mango Love” – is Esther and Howard’s upcoming release. The addition of gorgeous cello competes the triangle on the album - this comes from the delightful Adrianne Wininsky who elegantly anchors the force created by the pair. A true home made labor of love form conception to gestation to birth - all on the Carpet of Truth – this led to the creation of Carpet of Truth Productions - Enabling artistic integrity and dominion over all aspects of the project. It is the intention of Esther and Howard to work with solid global distributors and promoters to enable Mango love to reach any corner of the globe where it will be appreciated. With the interest of making the world a better place Esther and Howard intend to further the causes they believe in like animal and human rights with the abundance brought from Mango Love. Her and His-Story...Esther (Bertram) has a mother from Finland but grew up at the polar opposite sunny place in the world, Australia. Coming from a young hippy separated parents’ background, Esther found music early on as a stable world that supported her sensitivity and need for creative expression. She completed a diploma at a conservatorium before going on to do a bachelor of arts, majoring in Composition at university. She received the conservatoriums prize for composition both years she attended. It was then she built her 1st home studio and began producing. Almost directly from study in 2001 she moved to Germany and toured with her electronic chill duo Pixiefish and played at many big festivals. As the summer ended and the festivals died down, under a friend’s recommendation Esther began doing solo street concerts in Berlin, which surprisingly were very exciting and profitable. She soon joined the Germany based “Godfathers of Worldbeat” (Rolling stone) world music cult band Dissidenten as the singer for their live remix project and toured extensively Germany and Spain for the following 3 years. In this time she collaborated with the Drummer and percussionist Marlon Klein and he produced her 1st 2 solo albums “Urban Angel” 2004 and “Alchemy of the Heart” 2007 which were both released independently and distributed nationally throughout Germany. They went on to play many venues and festivals in Germany, Spain and Finland to support the releases. Simultaneously Esther won an EMI songwriting competition and collaborated with House music producer/DJ Tyree Cooper. Esther then moved to the U.K. and in early 2007 began work on her 1st solo electronic project (Yet to be named and released) and ...
