Vinyl 88 album
$41.09 The three-disc box set Get Down Tonight: The Disco Explosion was released just after PBS premiered the program of the same name, which featured new performances -- from Anita Ward, Thelma Houston, A Taste of Honey, KC & the Sunshine Band, and several others -- with archival footage from the disco era. Content-wise, the box doesn't do much to separate itself from the average disco compilation series, leaning heavily on mainstream hits. Each of these 58 songs reached the pop chart, remarkable for a movement with most of its roots planted in clubs that were only a little like Studio 54, populated by marginalized blacks, Latinos, and gays -- a subculture avoided or barely acknowledged by many Saturday Night Fever ...

Vinyl 88 CD music
$5.99 MOUNTAIN HIGH...VALLEY LOW won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album.
'90s gospel phenomenon Adams' major-label debut is about as high-gloss as it gets--the great production team of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis is all over it--and if you weren't paying careful attention, you might not even notice that it was religiously themed; the opening "Time to Change," for example, with its lyrics about "a woman from down the streetŕtryin' to get the attention of a married man" sounds more like hip-hop social realism than a paean to the Lord.
It's not long before the listener gets the message, though; by the time "That Name" comes up, a massive production number that goes from a placid piano/strings intro to a mass choir blow-out ...

Vinyl 88 songs
$17.89 THE COMPLETE SPECIALTY RECORDINGS was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Awards for Best Album Notes and for Best Historical Album.
They were known as the Soul Stirrers when they did the 1951-1957 recordings on this three-CD, 84-song collection. It's billed to Sam Cooke with the Soul Stirrers, though, as it's the ultimate collection of sides he recorded as a member of the group for Specialty Records, along with seven tentative secular pop/rock sides he did for the label as a solo singer in 1956. Cooke doesn't sing lead on all of the Soul Stirrers' tracks, though there are plenty of his leads to hear throughout the set; he shares lead duties with Paul Foster, although by the end of his time in the outfit, Cooke was taking most of the solo leads. There's also one cut, "All Right Now," on which Cooke shares lead with Rev. Julius Cheeks (two alternate versions of the song are also on the set). Even if Cooke isn't always the solo lead, however, he's a big presence on all of these sides, which represent both an important summary of his career prior to achieving pop stardom and a major body of gospel music. While much of the ...

$11.49 Big Green\'s story spans the eons, defying all notion of what is possible or even desirable in the realm of pop music mythology. It begins with an entirely insignificant pool of brownish muck somewhere in the southern hemisphere of the young earth. Well, it seems that sometime around when the continents of Africa and South America were a stone\'s throw apart, the more ambulatory elements of the pond\'s murky contents decided to hop over to the western shore of the new Atlantic Ocean, then only a bit wider than an Olympic-sized swimming pool. The sun shone darkly above the ancient world for another meaningless stretch of centuries…until one day, the dull and haggard members of the group Big Green rose to the surface of the puddle and crawled out onto dry land for the first time. The new world was full of dangers, and they were sore amazed…particularly by the rather statuesque stands of deciduous angiosperm, about which the primordial Matt aptly remarked, \"Hmmm…Big green hair. Bark suits.\" It was their towering moment.Ahem... where was I? Ah, yes. Big Green played in upstate New York venues during the late 1980s through early \'90s, then took a long ...
