Way back when his neo-rockabilly band Stray Cats crashed MTV with a greasy, tattooed image, no one could have predicted that Brian Setzer would age into such a crack big-band leader. His Brian Setzer Orchestra has been responsible for Christmas music that spans generational appeal by combining the big-band swing of Glenn Miller with Setzer's own high-roller rock & roll. This collection culls the best from the Orchestra's previous Christmas albums, including standards like "White Christmas" and "Jingle Bell Rock," alongside rockabilly-flavored novelties like "Dig That Crazy Santa Claus."
This DVD/CD set combines the brand new 'Best Of' collection (featuring 2 previously unreleased tracks, AND a full length BSO holiday concert DVD filmed in December 2004 at L.A.s sold out Universal Amphitheatre. It's a full 1 hour 40 minute show, with added backstage footage and behind the scenes work with Brain and crew. This is the same concert film that was broadcast on PBS stations during the 2006 fundraising drive (in an edited form). It's the Ultimate package for all fans of the Brian Setzer Christmas phenomenon. This is the first of three albums the group recorded. While most of the songs are attractively arranged and written with buoyant melodies, they seem to deviate from that joyous feeling initially conveyed. On some of the tracks, Bryan Banks' lead vocals are inconsistent, with the exceptions being "Why Leave Us Alone" and "You're Something Special." The former did crack the R&B Top Ten, with its disco rhythm track. The latter is the most adoring number on the album. The arrangement complements the lyric, which comes across as tender and sincere as ever. ~ Craig Lytle

For his fourth album as a leader, bassist Jeff Johnson sets an exploratory course. On Tall Stranger, Johnson works with sax player Hans Teuber (with a bit of a free jazz bent of his own) and drummer Billy Mintz. The trio spends a lot of its time, however, seemingly working less as a trio and more as a collection of three independent players who happen to be in the same room. This isn't accidental, or an effect of the group not working well together. Instead, it's more of a free jazz idiom, collective improvisation that only tenuously holds one player to another. In this case, though, Johnson's bass comes out to the forefront much more than one might normally hear the instrument, and it's a very good thing. His mastery of the instrument allows him to stretch out with a particularly deep sound, the echoes of the bass' wood itself providing most of the timbre.
