A year removed from his work organizing the Live Aid concerts to raise money and awareness concerning famine in Africa, ex-Boomtown Rat lead singer Bob Geldof released his solo debut. Deep in the Heart of Nowhere features a host of name performers ranging from Midge Ure (Ultravox) to Brian Setzer (Stray Cats) to Eric Clapton lending a hand. The lyrics are a bit self-conscious and overreaching at moments, but, with all of the talent on board, the album does have some winning tracks. The single, This Is the World Calling, barely scraped into the charts, but is an anthemic plea to the cosmos with a heavenly background vocal trio of Maria Mckee, Annie Lennox, and Alison Moyet. "August Was a Heavy Month" and "Love Like a Rocket" both contain fluid, melodic guitar work from Clapton, with the latter being an infectiously catchy lyrical take-off on the Kinks' "Waterloo Sunset." Unfortunately, the second half begins to waver and the album, overall, is unfocused and less than the sum of some pretty spectacular parts. ~ Tom Demalon

David Marks is one of the last true rock and roll heroes whose story somehow went untold…until now.” - The Rock and Roll Hall of FameDavid Marks began playing music with his neighbors, the Wilson brothers, in 1958 when he was 10 years old. When Brian Wilson began using that electric Rock and Roll foundation to support his intricate vocal harmonies, an exciting new sound was created.In spring 1962 Capitol Records acquired a demo recording of the songs Surfin’ Safari and 409 performed by The Beach Boys, which upon release became a massive national hit. Over the course of the next two years they would evolve into America’s top rock act. In only 18 months they recorded an astonishing four classic studio albums that included some of rock music’s most beloved anthems such as Surfin’ Safari, Surfin’ USA, Catch a Wave, Surfer Girl, In My Room, 409, Shut Down, Little Deuce Coupe and Be True to You School. And it was during these first years that the enduring image of five smiling Pendleton clad guys, carrying a surfboard on a California beach, was forever ingrained as the iconic image of American music – defining the band in the public’s eye for decades to come.David Marks was part of all of that, and then in late 1963 at 15 years of age he walked away from the Beach Boys at the very height of their initial wave of success. While his time in the band may have been short, he was there as the band rose from a local curiosity to the top of the Billboard charts and he was there when the Beach Boys created their trademark sound, one that still resonates to this day on radio, and in television and movies. The impact David Marks’ “Toes on the Nose” Fender Stratocaster had on generations of future guitarists is undeniable.David went on to record solo material for A&M, Warner Brothers, Imperial and Dot Records all before he was 21 years old. Two of his post Beach Boys bands, David Marks and the Marksmen, and The Moon, enjoy significant cult followings today and are especially popular among the 1960s era music aficionados. This album was a true labor of love.. It started its conception from us being on the Winter Solstice Tour. The label would hire musicians to back the featured artists. We would travel together for weeks on end, city to city in a big tour bus. I totally fell in love with these guys, and they brought so much good energy to my songs.
