The Swedish pianist Bobo Stenson possesses a highly pianistic touch, similar to Keith Jarrett's but far more elegant and reserved than that of his American peer. Clocking in at 78 minutes, Stenson's latest trio session, CANTANDO, is a lengthy recital yet still varied in its distinctive choice of material--Astor Pizzaolla, Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry, even Alban Berg ("Lebesode")! Exquisitely produced by Manfred Eicher, the disc reveals a shifting tonal palette of subtle greys, whites, and blacks, with highly nuanced musicianship to match. Stenson is aided in his explorations by the able duo of bassist Anders Jormin (who also contributes two fine originals, "Wooden Church" and "M") and the deft percussionist, Jon Falt. Stenson's ruminative brand of improvisation can best be described as aristocratic Euro-jazz, ideal for those meditative afternoons at home or the cafe.
Personnel: Bobo Stenson (piano); Anders Jormin (double bass); Jon Falt (drums).
JazzTimes (p.105) - "Stenson's extraordinary right hand turns any melody he plays into its austere essence, and, often, into devastating poignancy." Bobo Stenson Cantando Songs Cantando Review

Cantando album
$14.59 Jazz fans the world over have become familiar with pianist Marcin Wasilewski, bassist Slawomir Kurkiewicz, and drummer Michal Miskiewicz because they make up three quarters of the Tomasz Stanko Quartet. Working with Stanko live since 1993 when they were in their teens, they are now his studio band as well, and perform on his two recent, widely acclaimed ECM outings, The Soul of Things (2002) and Suspended Night (2004). This rhythm section is a prime reason for the success of those stellar recordings. Trio marks the debut of Wasilewski, Kurkiewicz, and Miskiewicz apart from their leader. The deep, unhurried lyricism that lies at the heart of the group's interplay is everywhere present in this set. There are four originals by Wasilewski, some cover versions including beautiful readings of Björk's "Hyberballad," Stanko's classic "Green Eyes," and a fine acoustic version of Wayne Shorter's "Plaza Real" (originally performed by Weather Report), and the deeply moving "Roxana's Song," by Karol Szymanowski. To round out the package, there are four collective improvisations. In other words, the many facets of this enterprising, adventurous band are showcased here in abundance over 13 tunes. The Shorter tune and Wasilewski's "Shine" are real standouts; they showcase the deep listening these cats do to one another in different ways. The former takes the tune's inherent melody and gently, softly ...
| | Enrico Rava Tati CD (2005)
Cantando CD music
$14.99 Enrico Rava's restrained trumpet playing has been regarded in modern times as perfectly reflective of the ECM sound. It is wrapped in European classical music while displaying a lyricism that goes beyond strict tonality, reaching for a soulful arena that only he can claim in the post-Miles Davis era. The emerging pianist Stefano Bollani joins Rava and veteran drummer Paul Motian for this contrabass-less trio that uses a downplayed sonic footprint, at times ethereal, but mostly calmed, collected, and serenely furnished. The compositions are mainly Rava's in hushed tones, but occasionally a modern progressive, bop-influenced, or energetic presence creeps in. Bollani's style is romantically based and postmodern in derivation, while Motian is simply one of the most sensitive drummers ever, with ears that pick up on every shading or nuance, translating it into artful percussive brush strokes of light color. The title track with its pensive, requiem mood; the tranquil, languid, and reflective "Mirrors"; the equally ruminative and pensive "Golden Eyes" (in no time and much slower than the others); and the straightforward, wistful version of "The Man I Love" -- all firmly establish Rava's sense of melancholia in a parsed and low-level manner. Then there's the bouncy and dancing "Jessica Too," a standout ...
| | Tomasz Stanko Lontano CD (2006)
Cantando music CDs
$14.65 The change of direction on Lontano, the third release by Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stanko and his three young collaborators -- Marcin Wasilewski (piano), Slawomir Kurkiewicz (bass), and Michal Miskiewicz (drums) -- is startling. Whereas Soul of Things (2002) and Suspended Night (2004) focused on Stanko's increasing sense of balladry and structurally harmonic, assonant atmospheres, Lontano showcases a band confident enough after playing for five years to find real space for free improvisation. Recorded in the south of France instead of Oslo, producer Manfred Eicher works his name magic and allows stillness and silence to play as much a role as the performers engaging one another musically. The opening title track is the first of three such excursions with the title "Lontano." Here, Wasilewski's piano opens the door and allows for the band to haltingly and carefully enter the tune, contributing economically until a groove eventually develops out of one of Stanko's balladic ideas. Ever so slowly the beat becomes circular and focused, the band vamps on it, gradually gaining in intensity until it threatens to fall apart. But it never does. Instead the band winds it way back down into silence. "Cyrhia" begins as a thoughtful, hesitant ballad, but once more finds its way out into the world, entering it as a near-modal blues. "Kattorna" was originally performed by the Krzysztof Komeda group ...

| | Dave Holland Pass It On CD (2008)
Cantando CD music
$9.69 Using a sextet, upright bassist Holland sets the bar even higher than on his previous efforts, adding the always tasteful pianist Mulgrew Miller and a four-horn front line that is relentless. The jaunty opening number, "The Sum of All Parts," is a 5/4 African percussion-based piece led by Robin Eubanks with folded-in alto and trumpet and witty counterpoint. Adding a light samba feel during the upbeat "Fast Track" with the horns in perfect unison, the ensemble shifts up to hard bop. A 10/8 choppy and bouncy "Modern Times" also uses Brazilian inferences and sees Antonio Hart switching to soprano. On the soulful side, the title track recalls visions of Horace Silver - a groovy, ...
