(1 Customer Review)
If Annie Lennox had only her time in Eurythmics to claim, she'd still be recognized as one of the greatest modern pop and soul singers. In addition however, she has enjoyed massive success as a solo artist. THE ANNIE LENNOX COLLECTION is the first compiled retrospective of this influential Scottish artist's solo hits. It features songs from DIVA, MEDUSA, BARE, SONGS OF MASS DESTRUCTION, even one from the BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA soundtrack ("Love Song for a Vampire"), along with two brand-new tracks. Even the most casual radio listener will recall "Walking on Broken Glass" and "No More I Love Yous," but the often more ambitious and angry songs from DESTRUCTION hold up just as well in contrast.
In a career that has spanned over 26 years, no other British female artist has achieved so much. This greatest hits compilation includes 12 of her legendary solo hits on CD as well as 2 brand new recordings, her first release of new material since the 2007 album, Songs of Mass Destruction. The DVD includes 14 of Annie's iconic timeless music videos.Q (Magazine) (p.116) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he headspinning 'Walking On Broken Glass' is the very point where keening intelligence meets gloriously fizzy pop." Record Collector (magazine) (p.98) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[With] half dozen tracks that you'll come to afresh, including a cover of Ash's 'Shining Light'....Well worth a listen..." Annie Lennox Collection album
$11.89 This stately Iceland rock outfit took the alternative-music world by storm with its second album, AGAETIS BYRJUN--a haunting, eloquent, 76-minute instant classic. Frontman Jon Por Birgisson sings in a language he calls "Hopelandic" (a combination of Icelandic and his own angelic calling), over the lyrical ebb and flow of feedback-drenched guitar, gushing keyboards, gently driving bass, and drums that crash like the surf of an alien ocean. After a droning beginning, the curtains suddenly part with "Svefn-G-Englar," revealing a sound as wide open and exhilarating as Iceland's landscape. Later, the mournful violin and slowly cascading beats of "Flugufrelsarinn" give way to ghostly horn sections, orchestral crescendos, stretches of silence, crashing dissonance, sad piano lines, and ...
| | Pretenders Get Close CD (1986) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Annie Lennox Collection CD music
$10.39 GET CLOSE, the Pretenders fourth album, has its drawbacks. There are a few too many mid-tempo songs, the production is unnecessarily slick, and at least one song--the unconvincing funk put-down "How Much Did You Get For Your Soul"--simply doesn't work. Yet GET CLOSE still packs a considerable wallop. One may long for the punk panache head Pretender Chrissie Hynde displayed on the band's early records, but frankly, if she has to celebrate the joys of motherhood, we should be thankful that the resultant "Hymn to Her" is such an exquisite a bit of neo-folk rock. (Gratitude is also the correct response to guitar god Robbie McIntosh's work throughout the album, which is, as usual, utterly succinct and thrilling).
Attention must also be paid to two of Hynde's loveliest ballads: the beguiling "My Baby" and the Memphis soul-tinged "Chill Factor." A very effective cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Room Full of Mirrors" closes the album. The cherry on top is the infectious "Don't Get Me Wrong," a Motown pastiche that's probably Hynde's most consistently ingratiating tune.
In the first edition of the Pretenders, Chrissie Hynde was a smart and streetwise rock & roller with just enough maturity to make something of what life had shown her by her mid-twenties -- and she had the rough-and-tumble band to match for her first two albums. The second version of the group cast her as an unwitting but unbowed survivor, determined to move on and keep ...

| | Green Day 21st Century Breakdown CD (2009)
Annie Lennox Collection songs
$12.99 Still enamored of the concept of the concept album more than four years after AMERICAN IDIOT, Green Day unveiled its rock-opera sequel, 21ST CENTURY BREAKDOWN, in 2009. Like its predecessor, BREAKDOWN wholeheartedly embraces the iconic punk-pop act's shift to a stadium-filling sound, while also remaining loyal to the San Francisco-based trio's progressive sociopolitical outlook. Even with a president in the White House that outspoken frontman Billie Joe Armstrong supports, he still finds plenty to rail against, with much of BREAKDOWN alluding to the earlier Bush years of the new millennium, particularly the surging, ...

Annie Lennox Collection CD music
$14.29 In 1977, record labels all around the world were snapping up bands perceived to be punk, at which time CBS Canada signed Toronto's The Diodes. The only problem is the label didn't know quite what to do with them, and despite their popularity with other bands on the scene (notably The Ramones), they were dropped after only two albums. Somewhere in the decades since, The Diodes attained an almost mythical status in the Canadian music community, spawning a tribute ...
| | Herb Alpert Lost Treasures CD (2005) Remastered; Special Edition
Annie Lennox Collection music CDs
$12.09 LOST TREASURES is a collection of rare and previously unreleased tracks.
Early in 2005, Shout! Factory launched an extensive reissue campaign of Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass' '60s catalog. In the first wave of reissues, Alpert's classic 1962 debut, The Lonely Bull, and his third album, 1964's South of the Border, were given upgrades and they were joined by a new compilation of rarities called Lost Treasures. Compiled in large part by Alpert himself, Lost Treasures features a generous selection of 22 tracks, recorded somewhere between 1962 and 1972. It's difficult to discern the exact dates since the otherwise excellent liner notes by Josh Kun (with an introduction by Alpert) do not mention when any of the individual songs were recorded or if they've appeared on other albums (Alpert alludes to the fact that some of the cuts here were album tracks on otherwise "unsuccessful" LPs from the early '70s), nor do they mention recording personnel. This is a bit infuriating for any fan or collector who wants to place the cuts in historical context, but as a listening experience, Lost Treasures is as pleasurable as any of the best Tijuana Brass albums. Part of this is that Alpert has cherry-picked the best of the leftover sessions -- and he admits that he did re-record some trumpet parts in order to complete the tracks, but these overdubs are not really noticeable -- and he's carefully selected and sequenced these ...
