Orquesta Puerto Rican Power album
$5.69 Superlative Gilberto Santa Rosa effort with strings makes this CD his most sophisticated, as well as one of his very best. The hit "Te Propongo" (composed by Juan Luis Guerra) was the best promoted tune; however, moments like "Encuentro," "Me Quiere Enamorar," "Sueńos Son," and "Te Amare" deserve special mention. A genuinely enjoyable sonic experience. Sadly, Santa Rosa's regular band (1986-1996) makes its final studio recording here. ~ José A. Estévez, Jr.
Personnel: Gilberto Santa Rosa (vocals); Fernando Medina, David Betancourt, Arnaldo Figueroa, Francisco Morla, Omar Velázquez, Enrique Collazo, Jorge R. | | Spanish Harlem Orchestra Un Gran Dia En El Barrio CD (2002)
Orquesta Puerto Rican Power CD music
$13.69 UN GRAN DIA EN EL BARRIO was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Salsa Album.
If the Spanish Harlem Orchestra are, as the promo copy suggests, "Harlem's answer to Cuba's Buena Vista Social Club," then Un Gran Dia en el Barrio is the soundtrack to a sweaty summer party in the city. One can almost hear the music and beats reverberating off the cement as they come curling out of a streetside window. The disc documents the salsa music native to upper Manhattan's Spanish Harlem and presents the music's tightly entwined grooves -- synchronized horn lines twisting over syncopated ...
| | Rhythms Del Mundo: Cuba CD (2006)
Orquesta Puerto Rican Power music CDs
$15.65 Turning the covers album concept on its head, Rhythms del Mundo: Cuba doesn't set a varied group of northern artists loose on the music made famous by the Buena Vista Social Club, but instead sets the Club's members lose on the northerners' own songs. Now that's an inspired idea, and all to aid charities assisting the victims of natural disasters and raising awareness of climate change. However, to call this a covers album is a bit misleading, as most of the songs feature the original vocals, and occasionally some of the original instrumentation, but it's not a remix project either, as the Social Club add their own music to the original recordings. So, it's a grand fusion of Cuban and northern sounds. And eclectic to boot, with songs contributed by such international artists as Quincy Jones, Sting and U2, as well as the likes of Radiohead and Coldplay. But to give the set a real frisson, the Social Club also took on such younger, feted artists as Franz Ferdinand, Maroon 5, the Kaiser Chiefs, and the so hot they're actually sizzling Arctic Monkeys. Reaching back into the past, Ibrahim Ferrer and the Club also deliver up a lush cover of "As Time Goes By," Omara Portunondo joins Ferrer for an equally lavish "Casablanca," and in another (and one of her final recordings) the late singer offers up a heartrending "Killing Me Softly." These numbers give the set its timeless quality; the rest its up-to-date feel. Not every song works perfectly, Jack Johnson's vocals are a bit uncomfortable rhythmically on his version, ...
| | Ruben Blades Nothing But The Truth CD (1988)
Orquesta Puerto Rican Power songs
$9.69 The first English-language album in the long and illustrious career of Panamanian salsa superstar Rubén Blades, Nothing But the Truth is a strong effort that, if less than great, is fascinating on several counts. The novelty of hearing Blades sing in English is certainly a big draw. He's a fine vocalist and he has the luxury of working with three of the English language's most eminent tunesmiths: Lou Reed (on the songs "Hopes on Hold," "Letters to the Vatican," and "The Calm Before the Storm"), Elvis Costello ("The Miranda Syndrome" and "Shamed into Love"), and Sting ("I Can't Say"). The one drawback to Blades' singing in English is that it lacks the fluidity of his native language, as each word is enunciated clearly yet a bit too slowly, as if he were reading the lyrics as he sang them. It helps, however, that the songs are topically engaging and generally in tune with their time (El Salvador, AIDS, Oliver North), so the unnaturally slow enunciation is a mixed blessing. Also a mixed blessing is the thoroughly contemporary, synth-heavy production, which screams out "1988!" As for the music, it varies from song to song and, overall, would best be tagged as late-'80s MOR with a Latin lilt. What's ...
