Frazier Chorus aren't what they seem. On Sue, the band's debut album, the group utilizes synthesizers, trumpets, flutes, and clarinets to paint evocative mental images. Most often the music and Tim Freeman's soft, heavily accented vocals paint postcards of England in the summertime. But Frazier Chorus' coyness is deceptive, as the sarcastic wit and sometimes nasty observations of Freeman are often buried underneath the LP's sunny surface. In the otherwise genial "Dream Kitchen," for example, Freeman confesses, "Your life is too good to be true/I think I'll ruin it for you." Usually hailed by fans of '80s electro-pop, Frazier Chorus are refreshingly different from many of their contemporaries, namely due to Freeman's talk-singing style and the incorporation of classical instruments. They have a jazzy side as well, best heard in "Forty Winks." The band could be viewed as forerunners of Pulp, but Pulp already existed -- albeit they were completely obscure -- when Sue was released in the late '80s. Nevertheless, "Sloppy Heart" has graphic yet poetic lyrics about premature ejaculation that would fit perfectly in Pulp's '90s discography. With its beautifully soaring flutes, it's easy to just listen to "Sloppy Heart" and be carried away, completely oblivious to Freeman's erotic story line. However, deciphering Freeman's words is a large part of the fun. Sue may be too subtle for some; the tracks are usually slow and quiet, but they grow on you, especially the breathtaking "Storm." "Dream Kitchen" and "Typical" landed on a few new wave radio stations in the late '80s, but it's the lesser-known songs such as "Sloppy Heart" and "Living Room" where Frazier Chorus create long-term appeal. ~ Michael Sutton

Susan Boyle's grand unveiling on Britain's Got Talent was with a song from Les Miserables - the very song that lends this album its title -- and if she could become an international sensation based on a show tune standard, there's no reason for her to change her approach on her debut, since that's the sound that made her a star. Plus, a large part of Boyle's ...

Rock CityFollowing the disappointment of the first Rock City studio recordings with Chris Bell that immediately preceded the formation of Big Star by Chris Bell and Alex Chilton not being picked up by a record label; Thomas Dean Eubanks spent years depressed and wandering the mean back streets and alleyways of Memphis Tennessee; seemingly with no purpose in life. Eubanks had become caught up in the revolving door of being in and out of various rehabilitation centers due to his having become hooked on phonics at an early age. The addiction to phonics was exacerbated by his not being able to hold a steady job due to chronic restless leg syndrome which would cause him to break into fits of uncontrollable improvisational dancing. This would occur at inopportune and inappropriate times during the work day and would inevitably result in termination of employment.Over a period of several years, aided by experimental treatments involving the judicious application of aroma therapy and the wearing of copper bracelets; Eubanks was able to manage his addiction to phonics and control his restless leg syndrome. As a result, he was ready to once again become a functioning member of society; although somewhat broken in spirit and ever mindful that a relapse could occur at any time. Anxious to resume his musical career, Eubanks went abroad to seek out guitarist Jeff Smith, who had for years been living a reclusive existence in a monastery in the foothills of the Himalayan mountains as an acolyte of a certain well known mystic and shaman in Nepal. These two old friends had previously worked together on the few Thomas Dean Eubanks solo efforts recorded for Terry Manning’s short lived Privilege Records label, which was distributed by Stax Records.Thomas Dean Eubanks and Jeff Smith returned to Memphis and proceeded to form a songwriting partnership similar to the partnership that had previously existed between Eubanks and Chris Bell. Eubanks and Smith spent months writing the bulk of the material found on “Who Can Find The Dreamer?” in the spring and summer of 1983; recording the material in the fall of 1983 ...
