Hailing from Brighton, The Grits emerge with their own take on raw, rare and grimy instrumental funk. Their journey began in 2005 with guitarist Stuart "Countryboy" Carter and Nick "The Organiser" Harris. Bassist James and drummer Johnny were recruited soon after, marking the birth of one seriously slick funk four piece. Their self titled debut includes a superb cover of The Soul Drifters "Funky Soul Brother", as well as "Boom Boom", the sold out 45 released on Freestyle and its B side Jan Jan - an instant raw funk classic championed by Radio 2s Mark Lamarr and Radio 6 funkster Craig Charles. With their roots firmly steeped in classic funk, The Grits add their own slant with trashy guitars, crunchy drums and deep bass. Add to this super-modulated Moog, a bag of percussion and their trademark guttural vocal grunts and you have a live show that never fails to work their live audiences into a funk frenzy. Grits songs
$13.89 In addition to being one of the best albums of 2005, the Secretly Canadian compilation OH YOU'RE SO SILENT JENS proved Swedish singer-songwriter Jens Lekman to be an artist of unusual talent, wit, poignancy, and charm. Those qualities continue to flourish on Lekman's 2007's studio effort NIGHT FALLS OVER KORTEDALA.
NIGHT FALLS is less lo-fi than the artist's previous work; in fact, the production is downright lush, featuring full-bodied arrangements that drip pop sunshine a la Burt Bacharach. But the central focus is Lekman's songs, which are as quaint, moving, pitch-perfect, and beautifully crafted as anything he's done.
| | Brian Jonestown Massacre Bravery Repetition & Noise Vinyl LP (2001) Purple Vinyl; Limited Edition
Grits album
$21.99 Having long explored the ins and outs of psychedelia, the Brian Jonestown Massacre now delve deep into the gloaming world of pop. Bravery, Repetition and Noise is a darkly dreamy album, rich in atmospheres, layered in waves of sound, moody pop for disillusioned people. The album's antecedents are clear, the gloomy post-punk Brit bands whose angst shuddered out across the airwaves in the late '70s through the early '80s. Of course, many of those groups were as inspired by psychedelia as they were by punk's nihilism, pulling both strands into a doom-laden, experimental sound quite distinct from anything that had come before or since. BJM uses this as their touchstone, lovingly re-creating the moods and atmospheres of the past. The vast vistas of "Open Heart Surgery," for example, is so Cure-esque that it seems to have been ripped right out of the hands and mouth of Robert Smith. "Just for Today" is Echo and the Bunnymen transplanted to San Francisco circa 1967, which is where they really wanted to be half the time anyway. Brighter numbers are still capped by dark clouds, musically and lyrically, poppier melodies are snatched out of the sun to bask in the shadows, while there's even a handful of more acoustic ballads to give the whole concept a twist. Bravery may have started at post-punk's knees, but by the end shimmers into a category all its own, and its all the more enjoyable for it. ~ Jo-Ann Greene
Brian Jonestown Massacre includes: Anton Alfred Newcombe, Robert Campanella (various instruments).

$12.99 | | Nile Amongst The Catacombs Of Nephren-Ka Vinyl LP (1998)
Grits music CDs
$16.89 The members of Nile are bona fide ancient Egypt freaks, and the fascination creeps into their music in ways other than crypt-focused morbidity. Exotic eastern instrumentation adorns songs like "Kudurru Maqlu" and the epic battle blast of "Ramses Bringer of War." Some of this sounds tailor-made for Conan the Barbarian, but Nile never forgets that they're a death metal band first and foremost; their brutal guitars and free-jazz level drumming create dust devils of scouring noise.
