Christmas Eyes album
$8.99 For his tenth full-length album, Playin' Favourites, British smooth jazz giant Peter White decided to, as the title suggests, turn to some of his favorite tracks from the '60s, '70s, and '80s, giving each of them his own interpretation (he did a similar thing in 1994's Reflections). Working with longtime producer Paul Brown, as well as musicians Boney James, Rick Braun, and Dave Camp, among others, White successfully turns the 11 songs on Playin' Favourites into instant crossover jazz hits. Mainly this means adding horns and keyboards to the background while the guitarist lithely moves around from the melody into lush improvisationally based solos, rendering them much slicker and smoother than they were before (although granted, he didn't have to do much to turn Bacharach's James Bond classic "The Look of Love" into something so adult contemporary). For many of the songs White chooses, the arrangements, albeit a bit sugary, transfer well, and ...

| | Herb Alpert Live: Anything Goes CD (2009) Digipak
Christmas Eyes album
$14.79 Herb Alpert has never really embraced his inner jazzman over the course of an entire album before; the closest he came was 1992's MIDNIGHT SUN, ultimately a highly controlled cocoon of a recording. But LIVE: ANYTHING GOES, at long last, is it, and it represents a string of firsts for the protean trumpeter--his first truly straight-ahead jazz project, his first all-new album of any kind in ten years, his first complete album with his wife, singer Lani Hall (who gets co-billing), and his first released by a label which he did not co-own. The concept grew out of a series of live dates that he and Hall played in various cities, from which these tracks were assembled. Despite some apparent lightly applied overdubs, it remains an intimate small group album of mostly standards, the kind of thing one might run across at Vibrato--Alpert's jazz club in the hills above Los Angeles. Hall appears in tandem with Alpert on nine of the 14 tracks--with Alpert taking five for himself--which guarantees an additional unique layer of intimacy as the trumpet man wraps his pithy horn lovingly around Hall's voice. Hall has kept her Portuguese in gear, doing well by Ivan Lins' "Dinorah, Dinorah" and the rapid-fire ...
| | Anne Briggs Sing A Song For You CD (1997) (Import) United Kingdom
Christmas Eyes CD music
$17.35 There are generally reasons why a record remains unreleased for 23 years. But in this case, it's the fault of Briggs herself, dissatisfied with her singing on the album. And that's a shame, because if it had been released in 1973, it could have made her ...
