While some longtime Primus fans feel that 1993's PORK SODA was the beginning of the end of the group, it was Primus' biggest commercial success to date, making them part of the 90's alternative rock royalty. Claypool's usually lighthearted lyrics take a turn to the dark side on the murder tale "My Name Is Mud" and the suicidal "Bob," but his biting sense of humor resurfaces on such tracks as "Welcome to this World," "DMV," "Nature Boy," and "Mr. Krinkle." PORK SODA was Primus first album to be recorded in the cushy confines of Les Claypool's house, giving the album a more "made at home" feel and sound than previous releases.

The superlative repackaging and remastering undertaken by Ryko has put the original three-part, two-record set of this magnificent nonsense tale together for the first time. This is back to the madness of Freak Out, with more pop and doo-wop bursting through all the complicated stuff, letting you know that Zappa could write a hit single, if he could be bothered to do so. Joe's Garage is a hoot and harmlessly pornographic. The sleeve-note states that it is "a stupid story about how the government is trying to do away with music." It is absolutely no coincidence that throughout, the listener mistakes the "scrutinizer" as the "scrotumizer." Zappa was that rude, and that funny.

Viewed through our photographs, it would seem we have lived a joyous, leisurely existence. As the title character, Ryan Gosling is a strange but likeable young man who manages to keep down a job but keeps mostly to himself. He only leaves the garage where he lives when his older brother Gus (Paul Schneider) and loving sister-in-law Karin (Emily Mortimer) drag him to their house next door for dinner. Lars doesn't take well to questioning, so the disturbing level of his isolation is never openly discussed. It's only when he announces he has a girlfriend in the form of an anatomically correct doll he purchased via the Internet that everyone must admit his precarious mental state. No one quite knows how to help Lars, so they play along, careful not to do anything that might push him or Bianca (his plastic fiancée) over the edge. The results are touching efforts on the part of all those who love him to help Lars through what his psychologist (Patricia Clarkson) assures them may be only a stage. Kelli Garner shines as Margo, the real, live girl who Lars seems incapable of seeing. Despite being ignored, Margo hangs in there, hopeful Lars will come around to sanity and to her.

In his series of releases for V.S.O.P., drummer Danny D'Imperio has successfully kept hard bop not only alive, but creative and fresh. This CD has one of his finest recordings. The arrangements are quite inventive; the 11 rarely recorded songs are superior (including Quincy Jones' "Jessica's Day," Freddie Redd's "Thespian" and Lee Morgan's "Need I"), and the musicians (in settings up to a ten-piece) sound quite inspired.
