Slavery is very much alive in the 21st century. With over 27 million people in bondage around the world, a collection of musicians--including Moby, Natasha Bedingfield, Matisyahu, and Talib Kweli--gather together to make a stand for justice. Intellectual Cornel West, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, and actress Ashley Judd lend their perspectives in this documentary that offers a provocative call to action. Call + Response Reviews: "CALL + RESPONSE deserves attention....Julia Ormond and Ashley Judd are articulate town criers and their reporting of victims' accounts heard firsthand are some of the most vivid and affecting."-- Robert Abele, Los Angeles Times "[A] passionate documentary on human trafficking....The performances are energetic and well shot..."-- Andrew Barker, Variety

$14.75 Barbara Hammer (NITRATE KISSES) spent most of her 30-year career making experimental films with a strong lesbian identity. Therefore, this historical manipulation is a logical addition to Hammer's canon. Here, Hammer has taken footage from lesbian history and subverted it using voice over and juxtaposition to create a satiric view of the history of lesbian visibility. Her techniques create a documentary that makes the claim that lesbians were dominating society. Using everything from educational films, newsreels, and stag pictures, HISTORY LESSONS is an interesting study in truth versus reality.
In this wonderfully irreverent yet empowering film, Barbara Hammer traces ...

$20.15 On October 13, 1972, a young rugby team called 'The Old Christians' from Montevideo, Uruguay, boarded a plane for a match in Chile - and then vanished into thin air. Two days before Christmas, 16 of the 45 passengers miraculously resurfaced. They had managed to survive for 72 days after their plane crashed on a a remote Andean glacier. Thirty-five years later, the survivors returned to the crash site - known as the Valley of Tears - to recount their harrowing story of defiant endurance and indestructible friendship. Visually breathtaking and crafted with riveting detail by filmmaker Gozalo Arijon, this film is powerful and spiritually moving.
In October 1972, a plane carrying a team of young rugby players from Montevideo, Uruguay, went down in a snow-covered valley in the Andes. The dramatic tale of the survivors' struggle to stay alive and be rescued, already told in a bestselling book and feature film, finds new depth and resonance in STRANDED: I'VE COME FROM A PLANE THAT CRASHED ON THE MOUNTAINS. Director Gonzalo Arijón, a childhood friend of some of the survivors, takes them back to the crash site, where they go into agonizing detail as they tell their remarkable, heartbreaking story, aided by re-creations of pivotal events. With no more food, they were forced to break one of humanity's primary taboos, using the bodies of their dead friends and relatives to have even a chance of remaining alive and being rescued in the Valley of Tears. Arijón talks to such brave survivors as Roberto Canessa, Gustavo Zerbino, Adolfo "Fito" Strauch, Antonio Vinzintin, and Carlos Paez as they reach deep within themselves, looking back on what they did with a fascinating perspective, a group of men in their fifties reexamining their struggle to survive when they they were around 19 and 20, with the rest of their lives in front of them as they ventured out of their country for the first time and encountered horrible tragedy. Florencia De Concillo-Perrin's score adds to the tension, and the film plays out like a gripping ...

| | Bart Got A Room DVD (2009)
Call + Response review
$21.49 As though Danny Stein's life weren't difficult enough with his parents' impending divorce, the high schooler now has to struggle to find a prom date. This comedy from Brian Hecker stars William H. Macy (WILD HOGS) and Cheryl Hines (CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM).
Bart got a room--a hotel room--and he’s booked it for senior prom night. Though the title character of BART GOT A ROOM appears only in one brief scene towards the end of the film, it’s his uber-geek specter that hangs over writer-director Brian Hecker’s comedy, a semi-autobiographical ode to teenage angst that aims for AMERICAN PIE-style yucks with a light edge of Philip Roth’s comic neuroticisms. The plot is centered on the hopelessly dateless Danny (Steven Kaplan), a gawky band nerd who must decide between taking his best friend, Camille (Alia Shawkat), to the prom, and attempting to woo the date of his dreams, a pretty blonde cheerleader. Along the way he endures derision and peer pressure from friends, as well as uncomfortably frank advice from his divorced parents, played by Cheryl Hines and William H. Macy (who sports a fantastically bad Jewfro). Set in the geriatric environs of terminally sunny south Florida, Danny’s world offers constant reminders of the road he’s headed down should he not solidify this one life-defining event: Macy’s Ernie grapples with loneliness by seeking women in chatrooms, while Hines’s Beth sees relationships as a shortcut to financial security. Kaplan gives a winning performance as the feckless, desperate Danny, coming across like a hormone-driven mix of Jason Biggs and Woody Allen. ...
