Superb! The three disc box set is a little pricey but if you're a Dylan fan, it's worth every penny. Highlighting the Oh Mercy period onward with outtakes, alternate takes, unreleased soundtrack work and live takes, there is an awful lot to listen to here and nearly all of it is terrific. By thomas_labelle (Thunder Bay Ontario Canada)
great bootleg this is a very good addition to the bootleg series. By Steve (Charny, Qc, Canada) This review is for a different format.
The Master This is a fine overview of the last twenty years in Dylan's career. Plenty of great tunes. The alternate takes are like new songs. By mjzakowski (La Grange Park, IL) This review is for a different format.
Simply Outstanding How DOES Dylan do it?! I can understand the difficulty they must have selecting which tunes to designate for album release. By faust8577 (Lorraine, Que. Canada) This review is for a different format.
Not the Dyan I'm used to but I like it. Very enjoyable and diverse. Not the old Dylan, guitar and harmonica. He's got a lot of backup band in this. Although the band and arrangements are excellent it a different Dylan. By kschmidt (Concord, NH, USA) This review is for a different format.

Bootleg Series, Vol. 5: Bob Dylan Live 1975 - The Rolling Thunder Revue CDs (2002) Top Seller
Tell Tale Signs: The Bootleg Series Vol. 8 CD music Bob Dylan's 1975 Rolling Thunder Revue can be seen as a reaction to his tour of the year before with the Band. Playing arenas in a pressurized atmosphere left little room for the kind of happy musical accidents that were so central to Dylan's live ethos. Rolling Thunder was more suited to his mercurial vision; a spontaneously planned and executed series of gigs with an odd assortment of players in a ragtag kind of gypsy caravan. In the repertoire, Dylan found a way to have fun with his legacy by reinventing some of his classics and simultaneously present tunes from his more contemporary albums (BLOOD ON THE TRACKS and DESIRE) with suitable verve. In this regard, these shows can actually be seen as a template for his subsequent Never Ending Tour.
The songs from DESIRE, from the allegorical "Isis" to the biting, sociopolitical narrative "Hurricane" are powered by Scarlet Rivera's electric violin and the thick, aggressive guitar tone of Mick Ronson. Dylan's early folk days get a nod via some heart-tugging solo acoustic performances and a series of duets with Joan Baez. Obviously charged with passion and fully immersed in the moment, Dylan singing with gut-wrenching intensity on both the ballads and the rockers, providing a kind of transcendent catharsis that's now happily documented for posterity.
Includes liner notes by Larry "Ratso" Sloman.

Bootleg Series Vol. 6: Bob Dylan Live 1964 CDs (2004)
Tell Tale Signs: The Bootleg Series Vol. 8 buy CD music In 1964, when the Beatles where still singing "I Want to Hold Your Hand," Bob Dylan was quietly making history at New York's Philharmonic Hall (now Avery Fisher Hall). ANOTHER SIDE OF BOB DYLAN had recently been released, but even the flights of fancy on "Spanish Harlem Incident" and "To Ramona" (both performed here), while unprecedented, couldn't have prepared the audience for the Big Bang of songwriting represented by the still-unrecorded "Gates of Eden" and "It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)." In a voice full of youthful vitality and insouciance, Dylan delivered groundbreaking poetic epics to a crowd that must have been equally confounded and exhilarated.
Disc Two contains more of Dylan's older, more conventional material as well as four duets with Joan Baez, including the folk ballad "Silver Dagger," which Dylan would never record. As full of life as this second half of the Philharmonic concert is, it still serves as a breath-catching period in the wake of the world-changing new songs heard in the first set. Probably only a few of those in attendance realized it at the time, but music would never be the same again.
Includes a 52-page booklet.

Tell Tale Signs: The Bootleg Series Vol. 8 songs Recorded in the charmed period between the initial success of ELTON JOHN and superstar extravaganzas like GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD, TUMBLEWEED CONNECTION, a loose concept album about the American West, was a strange, sideways move for Elton John and songwriting partner Bernie Taupin. A album in the traditional sense, it is best heard as a piece, with songs that pick up and expand on each other's moods and settings. Notice, for example, the progression of characters from the young fighter waving "My Father's Gun," to the retired and forgotten "Talking Old Soldiers," to the protagonist of "Where To Now St. Peter?," shot down by "a sweet young foreign gun" and ready to be judged by his maker.
The mood holds from the sepia-toned LP cover art to John's songwriting, influenced by folk and country music and by The Band's MUSIC FROM BIG PINK. Among the songs it introduced were "Country Comfort," which Rod Stewart covered on GASOLINE ALLEY, and "Come Down In Time," later done by both Judy Collins and Sting. Though the rollicking piano epic "Burn Down The Mission" and "Amoreena" became FM-radio and concert staples, TUMBLEWEED CONNECTION remains the only John studio album without a hit single, a fact that doesn't affect the impact of this excellent country-rock outing.

Neil Young Neil Young Archives, Vol. I (1963 - 1972) CDs (2009)
Tell Tale Signs: The Bootleg Series Vol. 8 album for sale This eight-CD box set, with about one-third previously unreleased material, sparks the beginning of a promising series of Neil Young ARCHIVES, and serves as a document of the heady exploration and growth that the beloved artist undertook between the innocent early 1960s and the explosive early '70s. The first CD preserves some early solo demos and his work with his teenage band the Squires, a Duane Eddy-ish enterprise that made the best of Young's nascent signature guitar style--simple, effective, dramatic. The second disc covers the Buffalo Springfield years, and includes two versions of the delicious "Flying on the Ground is Wrong."
The rest is prime Young, from DEJA VU through HARVEST, with and without Crosby, Stills, and/or Nash, Stray Gators, and Crazy Horse. Album tracks mingle with previously unreleased mixes, demo versions, and sizzling live tracks, and the final disc contains the 1974 film JOURNEY THROUGH THE PAST replete with the original film trailer and other extras. Needless to say this is the most complete Neil Young collection currently available, and a must-have for fans, no matter what point of the journey they got onboard with Shakey.

Elton John Elton John CDs (1970)
Tell Tale Signs: The Bootleg Series Vol. 8 CD music Elton John's second album was his first to be released in the U.S., and the difference between it and its predecessor, EMPTY SKY, is palpable and immediate. ELTON JOHN opens with "Your Song," a halting ballad that is one of the most moving love songs in the modern pop canon. The album also marks John's fruitful association with Gus Dudgeon and arranger Paul Buckmaster (who'd previously collaborated on David Bowie's "Space Oddity"). The team came up with a spare orchestral sound that surrounds the singer and his piano with dashes of both classical and rock guitar, synthesizers, carefully arranged drums, and searing strings.
This wasn't all-out pop yet, but rather a striking and singular brand of folk-rock. "Take Me To The Pilot" shows flashes of John's rocking future ("Bennie And The Jets" descended from it), "No Shoe Strings On Louise" is Rolling Stonesy country-rock, and "Sixty Years On" is haunting and memorable. More typical for this session is "I Need You To Turn To," another love song that finds lyricist Bernie Taupin in an unusually direct mode, and features a beautiful harpsichord melody from John. ELTON JOHN cast the mold for the singer's future superstardom.

Tell Tale Signs: The Bootleg Series Vol. 8 buy CD music After two decades of outsourcing the producing and arranging of his records to everyone from Mark Knopfler to Daniel Lanois, Bob Dylan stopped phoning it in in the '00s and began directly shaping their sound and feel. As producer of TOGETHER THROUGH LIFE, he elevates the near-cliche material with a beautifully crafted latticework of breathy border-town accordion and smoky guitar riffs (courtesy of Los Lobos's David Hidalgo and Heartbreaker Mike Campbell respectively), steel guitar, mandolin, and brushed drums. Initially intended as a soundtrack of an Olivier Drahan movie, the album finds a pleasantly off-hand bard building on the wistful romanticism of recent ballads (like MODERN TIMES's "Beyond the Horizon") with a cycle of songs (nine of them co-written with legendary Dead lyricist Robert Hunter) about dreaming, hoping, and good love. Indeed, the change in "I Feel A Change Comin' On" is not of the apocalyptic hard rain variety, but portends a potential tryst as Dylan chimes "life is for love" with uncharacteristic sweetness. Via languid slow burns ("Forgetful Heart"), sensual grooves ("If You Ever Go To Houston"), and loping blues walkarounds ("Jolene"), TOGETHER THROUGH LIFE plays like a great date night in a Texas dancehall--perfect for lovers tired of talking, who just want to grab hold and sway.
This deluxe DVD/2 CD set is his first new studio release since "Modern Times. The album features Dylan's touring band and special guests Mike Campbell from the Heartbreakers and David Hidalgo from Los Lobos playing accordion on most tracks. Also included is a TTL collectible poster & sticker. Included is a bonus CD of Dylan's "Theme Time Radio Hour: Friends & Neighbors" episode (60 minutes) and the DVD includes "Roy Silver The Lost Interview" (15 minutes). Limited Edition package.
