Halle Berry and Billy Bob Thornton star in this 2001 movie about a racist ex-cop who falls for a beautiful African-American woman. Bonuses: commentary, featurettes, interviews, deleted scenes. Set in modern Mississippi, MONSTER'S BALL subtly examines the impact of personal loss and the transforming power of human connection. The movie begins in the state penitentiary's death row, where father-and-son prison guards Hank (Billy Bob Thornton) and Sonny Grotowski (Heath Ledger) administer the execution of a black death-row inmate Lawrence Musgrove (Sean Combs), who leaves behind a wife, Leticia (Halle Berry), and son, Tyrell (Coronji Calhoun). When both Hank and Leticia's children subsequently die, the two grieving parents are accidentally thrust together, where they begin to find comfort and eventually a form of redemption.
Employing a languid pace and minimalist dialogue, MONSTER'S BALL slowly moves forward on the strength of the cast's performances (including a supporting turn from Peter Boyle as Hank's ailing racist father, Buck) and Marc Forster's understated direction. The complex characters are allowed to develop gradually over the course of the entire movie, making the film a richly satisfying character study rather than a quick, plot-driven confection. Good realistic story with a great cast. I liked it better the second time i saw it on IFC movie channel. Glad it received the blu-ray edition it deserves.

Billy Bob Thornton and Halle Berry are at their best in this amazing film. The entire cast shines with every moment. Well-worth watching.

BOY WHEN THEY FIX AN OSCAR AWARDS THEY PUT THE BEST RATINGS UP DON'T THEY? I WAS APPALLED AND DISTURBED AT THIS MOVIE. THOUGH IT WAS AN ORDINARY STORY AND THE ACTORS WERE OKAY IN IT I WAS SO SURPRISED THAT IT WAS CONSIDERED AS OSCAR MATERIAL. THE BEST ACTING PERFORMANCE WAS BILLY BOB'S AND YES IT HAD SOME REALLY EARTHSHAKING AND SOME IN YOUR FACE,VULGAR AND SURPRISING MOMENTS LIKE HEATH LEDGER SHOOTING HIMSELF IN THE CHEST IN FRONT OF HIS FATHER AND YES THE SEX SCENES. THE BIGGEST SUPRISE OF ALL WAS THE VULGARITY OF HALLE BERRY THAT WAS CELEBRATED AND GLORIFIED BY THE OSCARS. HALLE BERRY IS A PRETTY WOMAN IN HER OWN RIGHT AND THIS IS A SIDE I JUST DIDN'T WANT TO SEE. JUST BECAUSE SOMEONE "GETS THERE FREAK ON" AS ONE PERSON WROTE HERE DOESN'T MEAN THAT HALLE DID A OSCAR CALIBER ACTING JOB!!!THIS WAS ONE CLICK SHY OF A PORNO FILM. ANGELA BASSET AND VIVICIA FOX CAN CAN ACT CIRCLES AROUND BERRY AND THE OSCARS ARE ABOUT CLASS AND TALENT. I PERSONALY SUMMED IT UP AS SOME POLITICALY MOTIVATED DECISION TO GIVE HER THE AWARD SO THEY COULD HAVE A "BLACK SWEEP" OF THE OSCARS. DAMN!! I had no clue Halley Berry was such a FREAKY Mamma? Great preformances! I was curious though, she said her son got hit by a car...true, or did she beat him to death for walking too slow? Puffy was good in this too! Love Peter Boyle (Frank, in Every body Loves Raymond) Good job!!

British director Ridley Scott may not seem a logical choice for this truly American crime drama, but the filmmaker does an excellent job. The film is based on a true story and set in 1968 Harlem, where Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington) is a driver for Bumpy Johnson, one of the top figures in the city's criminal world. When Bumpy dies, Lucas swoops in, taking over his predecessor's empire and expanding it over the next few years with his sale of a particularly potent brand of heroin. Meanwhile, New Jersey cop Richie Roberts (Russell Crowe) begins to investigate the New York drug world and discovers that there's a new power in town.
